Mercedes EQA is a mid-range electric SUV, unveiled in 2021 and launched on the market in a few weeks. It is based on gas-powered SUV Mercedes GLA, same chassis, same sizes and almost the same exterior &amp; interior design. German carmaker only took the internal combustion engine out and replaced it with electric motors and battery system.
EQA has both AWD and FWD options. Dual motor EQA 4MATIC can produce 292 HP and 520 Nm torque. It takes 6.0 seconds to get from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) with the fastest version. All versions provide 60 kWh battery capacity. EQA can travel up to 432 kilometers when fully charged. Compact electric SUV works with 100 kW DC plugs, charging from 10% to 80% is around 30 minutes.
Mercedes-Benz has been producing the EQA both in Germany and China. It is the cheapest electric Mercedes on market. Pricing starts at €47,541 for the front-wheel-drive EQA 250, €53,538 for the EQA 300 4MATIC, and €56,215 for the EQA 350 4MATIC.
<h2>Performance</h2>
Mercedes EQA offered in three forms: the base model front-wheel-drive EQA 250, and AWD dual motor version EQA 300 4MATIC and EQA 350 4MATIC. The base version EQA has 190 HP, 375 Nm torque, 0-100 km/h performance around nine seconds.
All-wheel-drive EQA 300 4MATIC can produce 228 horsepower and 390 Nm torque, whereas the most advanced variant of range EQA 350 4MATIC has 292 horsepower, 520 Nm torque. Acceleration figures from 0 to 100 km/h are 7.7 seconds and 6.0 seconds respectively.
<h2>Design and Features</h2>
Mercedes basically used everything they can from the GLA when making the EQA, interior and exterior designs are very similar. There are only a couple of distinctive differences, such as EQC-style headlights, full length taillights shaped like a lightbar, and the aero-efficient front grille along with the new wheels that helps reduce drag and increase range.
German car manufacturer put the battery pack on top of the existing chassis of the GLA and that raises the floor quite a bit. This can cause passengers to feel uncomfortable, but at least the cabin height is decent enough to give occupants more room up high. Volvo XC40 Recharge did a better job at preserving the comfort of the back seat while transforming an existing vehicle to electric.
There are tons of EQ badges all around the interior, Mercedes constantly reminds you that EQA is an electric SUV. Design and materials all look and feel premium, as they should. Two 10.25-inch displays create a digital cockpit around the driver. Mercedes’s MBUX user interface still lags on some occasions, but you can always use Android Auto and Apple CarPlay for more functionality.
There is no trunk capacity on the front as you would expect. Because of the electric motor sitting on the rear axle, regular truck capacity is not very good either. Compact SUV provides great comfort to its driver and passenger, but back seats are not that comfortable and cargo space is very limited. EQA is the direct rival of the Tesla Model Y. Unfortunately, it not only lacks the range and speed, but also has less space and offers less practicality than the Tesla SUV.
<h2>Range and Charging</h2>
Both FWD and AWD EQAs all have the same 66.5 kWh battery pack. EQA 250 and EQA 300 4MATIC offer 426 kilometers of range. EQA 350 has slightly better range estimates around 432 km.
Mercedes EQA supports 100 kW DC charging; it can get from 10 percent charge to 80 percent in 30 minutes. It takes less than 6 hours to fully charge the vehicle when plugged into the wallbox or an AC charger.

Lucid

Lucid Air is a premium electric sedan that coming to market in spring 2021. It is currently in the pre-production phase at Lucid’s Arizona facility in United States.
Luxurious EV start-up will offer a bunch of different variants of its first vehicle: Air Dream Edition, Air Grand Touring, Air Touring, and the base model Air Pure. Dream Edition will be the first one to be delivered to customers in 2021. Cheapest version Air Pure is not going to be available before later in the 2022.
Lucid Air offers up to 1,080 horsepower with its dual-motor AWD drivetrain. It will be equipped with a 113-kWh huge battery pack. Lucid claims that luxurious sedan can travel up to 832 kilometers on a single charge. Acceleration performance of 0-100 km/h speed is 2.7 seconds. Ultra-fast sedan can also be charged rapidly fast, thanks to one of its kind 900V electrical architecture. It offers more than 300 kW charging rates when plugged into the right DC charger.
Cheapest version Air Pure will be priced around $77,000, but it’s not coming anytime soon. Lucid Air Dream Edition is coming this year and it will cost $169,000 without extras. It will be one of the most expensive electric cars in the market.
<h2>Performance</h2>
Most powerful version of the premium sedan, Lucid Air Dream Edition can be able to produce 1,080 HP. It can get from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 2.7 seconds and top speed is at 322 km per hour.
Other than its smooth and at the same time exciting driving experience, Lucid Air has a LiDAR system that helps with the driving-assist features. Electric sedan has enough hardware to ensure its occupants’ safety while enjoying the thousand horsepower drivetrain’s instant torque feeling.
<h2>Design and Features</h2>
Lucid Air has a very sleek design that achieves a drag coefficient of 0.21, it is the third most aero-efficient vehicle in the world. Tesla Model S Plaid has a 0.208 drag coefficient, lowest of any car ever made. Mercedes EQS is also very good; it produces a drag coefficient of 0.20. That little difference translates into miles of range in the EV-world.
The Air comes with a 34-inch giant display which offers 5K resolution. Display quality-wise, it is way better than any other luxurious car around such as Mercedes EQS’s Hyperscreen and the Tesla Model S.
The humongous display is also slightly curved, surrounding driver with a digital mobility ecosystem. Fancy display aside, dashboard has a very characteristic design. There are loads of quality materials around the cockpit like premium wooden parts, soft fabrics, Alcantara door trims, leather seat covers etc. Lucid used an open port design for the air vents and that also helps design to be smoother.
There is a tablet display below the dashboard that can nest inside the central console when it’s not needed, very similar to Audi’s folding display design on its previous generation vehicles. There is also a 21-speaker Surreal Sound system. With this advanced audio hardware, Lucid will be the first car to offer Dolby Atmos technology to its occupants.
<h2>Range and Charging</h2>
Lucid Air Dream Edition and Air Grand Touring equipped with a 113-kWh battery pack, range estimates are 810 km and 832 km respectively. Both of these Air models offer 300 kW DC charging, it takes 20 minutes to charge that big battery from 10 percent to 80 percent.
Base model Air Pure and the Air Touring will have a smaller 75-kWh battery when they arrive to the market in 2022. Those two variants’ range estimates are also not bad, around 650 kilometers.

Chinese electric vehicle brands are a top priority at Licarco because the EV market has become increasingly dominated by pure electric Chinese cars. Last year, China sold more EVs than the rest of the world. BYD, NIO, ORA, and Geely are some of the biggest Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers.
Even though China has been producing millions of EVs for years, American drivers wouldn&#8217;t be able to buy one. It&#8217;s because vehicles made in China are subjected to a %27.5 import tariff in the US. Due to heavy taxation, Chinese brands had not prioritized the US auto market in their global plans. But that&#8217;s changing quickly, as more and more Chinese EV marques are expanding their reach towards western markets, including United States.
In this article, we gathered a list of Chinese EV brands and their expansion plans. We will update this post when an announcement is made regarding any Chinese EV maker&#8217;s global expansion.

Leapmotor, an emerging EV brand backed by Dahua Technology, has plans to enter the European market in 2023. The brand officials confirmed that Leapmotor would open showrooms in Europe. To finance its globalization plans, Hangzhou-based carmaker filed its first IPO that worths around $1.5bn at Hong Kong Exchange.
The brand has already started to sell electric vehicles in Turkey and Israel, starting with the compact hatchback called <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/leapmotor-t03" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Leapmotor T03</a>. The first EV to be showcased in Europe will probably be the electric sedan C01. With its sleek design, cell-to-chassis technology, and impressive performance figures, <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/leapmotor-c01" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Leapmotor C01</a> will attract a lot of customers.

BYD first entered Norway with the full-size electric SUV called <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/2022-byd-tang-ev" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tang EV</a>. Over the next months, China&#8217;s biggest EV manufacturer will start selling vehicles all over the world. BYD EVs are already available in Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. European countries where BYD will start operations before the end of 2022 are the United Kingdom, Germany, Denmark, Netherlands, and Sweden.
BYD will export these three electric vehicle models to Old Continent; compact electric SUV <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/byd-atto-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BYD Atto 3</a>, electric sedan <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/2022-byd-han-ev" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BYD Han EV</a>, and BYD Tang EV. India, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam will also be subject to BYD&#8217;s global expansion, as official statements confirmed.
Unfortunately, BYD has no plans to enter the American market yet. But there is a possibility of Chinese EV maker using its new premium brand, which reportedly will deliver a $145K+ luxury EV to the market, to attract customers from United States.

NIO is one of the first Chinese automakers, which officially confirms its entry into the US market. NIO-branded EVs will be on sale in the US starting in 2025. Large-size SUV ES8 is currently being tested on US roads. There is no official timeline for the US launch, though.
Chinese EV marque will also start selling EVs in Germany, Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway. The next move on the global plans is to enter more European markets such as Austria, Belgium, France, Hungary, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Portugal, and the Czech Republic. NIO is hoping to sell electric vehicles in 25 countries by 2025.

In February 2022, Xpeng opened its first showroom in Stockholm, Sweden. Guangzhou-based company will start selling EVs in Denmark, Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden before the year ends. The company&#8217;s first offering will be the mid-range electric sedan <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/xpeng-p5-600p" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Xpeng P5</a>.
Xpeng expects half of its electric vehicle sales in 2025 to come from outside of China. Europe is its first choice but customers from the US will eventually get a taste of Xpeng&#8217;s popular cars in the near future. Chinese brand signed a dealership agreement with a Turkish company to sell EVs in Turkey as well. The first vehicle to be put on sale in Turkey will be <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/xpeng-p7-4wd-high-performance" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Xpeng P7</a>.
<h2>Zeekr</h2>

Geely is a global automotive group. There are brands under the Geely Group that sell vehicles all over the world. Zeekr will be joining those brands next year by entering the European market. EV-only brand will make it official in early 2023, as Zeekr announced.
Zeekr has only one model on sale called Zeekr 001, but it has plans to launch a total of seven EVs by 2025. Its 2025 sales goal in Europe is 100,000 vehicles. There is no word whether Zeekr will sell EVs in Scandinavia, western/or eastern Europe. Follow us for more details.

Great Wall Motors (GWM) has officially entered the United Kingdom and Germany with its EV-only brand ORA. GWM introduced the first vehicles to be put on sale in Europe earlier this year. <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/ora-cat-64-kwh" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ORA Cat/Funky Cat</a> is the first one for the western market.
The company appoints Emil Frey to distribute vehicles starting in Germany. That is not the first time GWM to choose Germany for its global expansion. Chinese automaker&#8217;s battery division SVOLT opened a battery plant in Germany as well. Recently SVOLT announced its second investment worth €2.0bn, which would enable them to produce lithium-ion battery cells directly in the country.

Leapmotor T03 is a small-size electric hatchback first hit the market in May 2020. It is the second EV that Dahua-backed EV start-up built and launched. T03 comes with a 41-kWh battery pack, which is enough to give this small EV a range of 403 kilometers, according to <a href="https://www.licarco.com/news/ev-range-tests-explained-comparison-between-epa-ratings-wltp-nedc-and-cltc">CLTC test cycle</a>.
Chinese company recently announced that Leapmotor T03 has passed the European Union&#8217;s Whole Vehicle Type Approval and it is ready to be sold in EU. Leapmotor also officially confirmed its entry into the Israeli market with the very same model. First batch of T03 are on their way to Israel. The official pricing of the electric hatchback will be announced by Leapmotor&#8217;s partner in Israel called Metro Motor.

Regenerative braking technology is a bliss for the efficiency of <a href="https://www.licarco.com/cars">all-electric vehicles</a>. But it takes time to get used to this helpful feature. Sometimes it gets annoying or makes no sense on some occasions. There is an option to turn it off, but things get complicated with <a href="https://www.licarco.com/news/how-many-tesla-cars-have-been-sold">Tesla vehicles</a>. Let us explain.
If you want to turn off regenerative braking on your Tesla, you probably won&#8217;t find any disabling option in the menu. Because turning off regenerative braking is not possible on a Tesla. It is also impossible to adjust the regen on Tesla vehicles built since Q2 2020. Tesla Model S/3/X/Y vehicles built before that date can still be able to offer adjustments. You just need to navigate through the main screen and go to Driving, then change the &#8216;Regenerative Braking&#8217; to &#8216;Low&#8217; for reducing the level of regenerative braking.
Newer Tesla vehicles come with standard level regen as default. There is no &#8216;Regenerative Braking&#8217; adjustment option anymore. So, why wouldn&#8217;t Tesla allow its drivers to adjust regenerative braking? The main reason is that the vehicle range is heavily affected by not being able to recuperate the energy you otherwise lost to heat, etc by pressing the brake pedal. Other automakers agree with Tesla as well. If you drive a Tesla vehicle built before Q2 2022, your car&#8217;s main screen comes with an option to adjust regenerative braking. You just need to go to settings, then select the &#8216;Driving&#8217; menu from the left and change the &#8216;Regenerative Braking&#8217; option to &#8216;Low&#8217; for partially turning off the regen.
You won&#8217;t be able to turn off this feature. There is, however, a way to heavily limit the effects of regen braking. Here&#8217;s how:
<h3>Why Does Regenerative Braking Limited on My Tesla?</h3>
If you live in a cold area or your battery is fully charged, your Tesla vehicle would warn you about the regenerative braking is being limited. That&#8217;s because the battery is unable to receive the energy from the regen system and the battery&#8217;s management system temporarily turns off the regenerative braking feature. It might take up to half an hour for your vehicle to recover from that. In order to reduce the negative effects of this limitation, you can enable an extra feature for automatically applying the brake pedals instead of regen braking. Just go to Controls &gt; Pedals &amp; Steering, then turn on the &#8216;Apply Brakes When Regenerative Braking is Limited&#8217; option.
<h3>Does Regenerative Braking Work on Icy/Snowy Roads?</h3>
Not being able to turn off regenerative braking might sound dangerous on icy/snowy roads, but Tesla has a solution for this. In 2022, Tesla adjusted the traction control software of its vehicles and added a hidden snow mode. Its main function is to better handle regen braking adjustments on icy roads and snow. A spokesperson confirmed the Tiguan EV, which will probably be called ID. Tiguan, will enter production at the Wolfsburg factory in 2026. It will most likely be an ID.4 replacement. So, we expect a similarly sized and priced electric SUV.
The new Tiguan will be based on the German automaker&#8217;s recently updated EV-dedicated platform called MEB-Plus. This new modular architecture will be able to work with low-cost <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/news/lithium-ion-battery-cell-types-lfp-nmc-cells-explained" target="_blank" rel="noopener">LFP batteries</a>. Thanks to new battery options, Volkswagen will not only make cheaper EVs but also build models with more than 700 kilometers of range. ID. Tiguan could offer that much range and also support 200-kW DC charging, according to rumors.

The second good news is about electric Golf. It originally entered the market in 2014, then six years later discontinued after the ID.3&#8217;s highly-anticipated launch. Popular news outlet contacted a dozen of experts familiar with Tesla&#8217;s battery manufacturing efforts. Almost all of these experts confirmed that Tesla is struggling with the mass production of 4680 cells at its Kato Road facility in California. The reason for this is the new electrode manufacturing process called dry-coating/or DBE (Dry Battery Electrode). Tesla acquired this tech from Maxwell Technologies, a San Diego-based ultracapacitor company it bought in 2019. But implementing this new technology into mass production is not as easy as Elon Musk thought.
The good news is that Tesla will eventually enter high-volume production of its 4680 cells sometime in 2023. It will help Tesla halve the cost of <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/2021-tesla-model-y-performance" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Model Y</a>&#8216;s battery pack, saving almost $5,500 per vehicle. That&#8217;s 8 percent of a Model Y&#8217;s US retail price.
Using dry-coating tech will not only cut costs but also help EV-maker rapidly ramp up their battery production. According to research data mentioned by famous Youtuber <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3iLZmz_IQt4&amp;ab_channel=TheLimitingFactor" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Limited Factor</a>, dry-coating process will speed up cell production 7 times compared to conventional wet-coating methods. New tech will dramatically decrease initial battery production investment as well.

According to a document issued by this company, using the new tech will help battery makers avoid spending approx. 22 hours in the electrode creation phase, and buying expensive tools for mixing the solvent with electrodes, vacuum drying, solvent recovery, etc.
Dry-coating is more environmental-friendly than any other electrode processing method available today. This method will allow companies to use up to 10 times less space for the battery plants, reduce their energy bills up to 10 times by not using huge vacuum dryers, and increase the energy density of cells without going through costly R&amp;D phases. Thanks to all those advantages, lithium-ion batteries will be cheaper, initial investments will be lower, and battery plants will be smaller.
Dry-coating will definitely be a tremendous advancement in the field of battery manufacturing. Cheaper batteries mean that electrification of the automotive industry will speed up quite a lot and average EV prices will hopefully go down.

Although it&#8217;s not officially confirmed by the manufacturer, Tesla Model Y with a BYD structural battery pack has received its approval of type from the EU. This means that Tesla could technically start selling the cheaper Model Y in Europe right away. According to documents issued, Tesla implemented a structural battery that has a 55-kWh energy capacity. The new pack gives Model Y a range of 440 kilometers. The range improves further, thanks to a more compact battery that reduces vehicle&#8217;s overall weight around 66 kg.

BYD scored a big win over its rival CATL. Thanks to its unique battery cell design called &#8216;Blade Battery&#8217;, Tesla can use the cells BYD supplies and create an alternative to its 4680-cell structural battery pack. The original Model Y with the structural pack has a capacity of 75 kWh, while BYD&#8217;s pack offers only around 55 kWh. Due to a significant change in the pack design, CATL partially lost one of its most valuable customers. If Tesla starts to use structural packs in Giga Shanghai, BYD will be the go-to supplier for structural pack-proved LFP cells.
Tesla has been using <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/news/lithium-ion-battery-cell-types-lfp-nmc-cells-explained" target="_blank" rel="noopener">LFP cells</a> inside cheaper models for a while. But the new Model Y with the structural pack has been using Tesla&#8217;s own 4680 cells exclusively. Giga Berlin will be the first factory to use BYD&#8217;s lithium-ion battery cells. CATL calls its new battery &#8220;M3P&#8221;, which holds 15% more energy than its current LFP batteries. Thanks to a more energy-dense battery pack, Tesla&#8217;s new model will weigh less and offer more mileage.
Late Post reported that the new battery will be used inside the 2023 Tesla Model Ys built in the Giga Shanghai factory later this year. Tesla would start producing new electric SUVs with CATL&#8217;s brand-new battery as soon as Q4 2022, the report said. Refreshed Model Y is going to be delivered to Chinese customers in early 2023.
CATL has been developing an improved version of the highly popular LFP battery cells for quite a while. M3P will solve LFP&#8217;s low energy density stats compared to NMC cells. It is reported that the Chinese battery maker would produce M3P cells offering 210 Wh/kg gravimetric energy density. As a result, EV manufacturers could build much lighter vehicles or make those vehicles travel farther while storing more energy inside a battery pack that weighs the same.

CATL has yet to reveal M3P&#8217;s cathode chemistry. But it hinted multiple times that the new way forward would be LMFP (Lithium-manganese-iron-phosphate). Conventional LFP batteries cost less than NMC, provide a longer life cycle, and decrease the possibility of catching fire when thermal runaway occurs. The only downside is the lower energy density. BYD&#8217;s one of the first LFP battery solutions and only offer 90 Wh/kg, less than half of what NMC cells store.
To further improve LFP&#8217;s energy density, a significant number of companies rely on new cathode chemistry with manganese-additive. CATL will be the first manufacturer to bring &#8216;LMFP&#8217; cells into the market with the launch of M3P batteries. NIO has been developing a similar chemistry for its future EVs. Chinese sources said the company would not only add manganese but also add a third metal into the cathode of its M3P cells. The third metal used in the ground-breaking cathode is yet to be disclosed. Magnesium and aluminum are two highly likely options here.
CATL&#8217;s main goal is to help its customers build cheaper and longer-range EVs. M3P cell, with its promising cathode could be the key to achieving its goal. M3P will improve the LFP battery&#8217;s energy density and keep the manufacturing costs down. The Chinese firm will also not have to spend too much money to change its production lines for the new battery cells, as the LMFP production process is not so different than the conventional LFP products.

2023 Tesla Model Y said to use CATL’s new energy-dense M3P Battery

After announcing its entry into the Netherlands in early July, BYD is up for more action in the European EV market. Chinese automaker is ready to start selling electric vehicles in Germany and Sweden, according to the press release published by BYD Europe.
Hedin Mobility will be BYD&#8217;s main distributor in Germany and Sweden. Gutenberg-based company has been operating in 8 different countries, serving customers with more than 230 dealership stores. The well-respected dealer will open BYD&#8217;s first showrooms in Sweden this October, followed by first deliveries in the fourth quarter of 2022. In Germany, Hedin will choose local dealers for BYD and orchestrate its operations.
BYD has been selling EVs in Norway since last year. It was the only country Chinese firm officially started operations, until now. Lithium-ion batteries tend to lose their energy capacity over time. That is mostly due to extended usage. Electric vehicles technically don’t produce any exhaust emissions like carbon monoxide (CO) and NOx. These types of vehicles are definitely cleaner than ICE vehicles. But that doesn’t mean EVs don’t have any carbon footprint. Electric cars use electricity to charge up and a high portion of the electricity generation causes heavy pollution.
EVs are also indirectly polluting the environment with their battery packs. The production and disposal of lithium-ion batteries definitely cause pollution. When electric car batteries reach the end of their life, they can be recycled for valuable materials including lithium, nickel, manganese, cobalt, and graphite, which means electric car battery disposal can decrease EV&#8217;s carbon footprint.
Tesla already recycles batteries from its vehicles. Volkswagen’s pilot recycling plant for used EV batteries has also begun operations. Elon Musk expects the auto industry to have enough battery materials inside the existing EV fleet in the next 30-40 years, eliminating the need for mining new materials. The first European lithium-ion battery cell manufacturer Northvolt produced its first cell made “100 percent from recycled nickel, manganese, and cobalt”. But approximately half of the materials in an EV battery pack are recycled. There is still a very long way to go in the battery recycling business.
