The electric coupe NIO EC7 officially debuted at the Chinese EV maker&#8217;s highly-anticipated NIO DAY event in December 2022. It is based on the NT 2.0 platform, which is much better at creating more aerodynamic vehicles. EC7, with its drag coefficient of 0.230 Cd, is one of the most aerodynamic SUVs in the world. 
NIO claims that EC7 drivers can get a range of 940 kilometers with the 150-kWh solid-state battery pack option. Regular packs, such as the popular 100-kWh version is also very good at delivering a long range, its CLTC estimate is 635 kilometers. 
There is a set of sensor on top of the EC7, including a LiDAR unit. Fully-electric vehicle will also take advantage of the second generation digital cockpit, which is based on the latest version of the NIO&#8217;s operating system called Banyan.

Is The Cybertruck Canceled?

IM Motors, a direct competitor to Tesla, is a high-end electric vehicle brand founded in 2020 and unveiled its first vehicles in early 2021. Its name is an abbreviation of the &#8220;Intelligence in Motion&#8221;, which clearly indicated that IM Motors is a smart vehicle-focused automaker. 
A total of $1.4 billion (10 billion RMB) initial investment was made by IM Motors&#8217; shareholders as a founding capital. <h2>Who Owns IM Motors?</h2>
IM Motors is a joint venture between Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba, the automaker SAIC Motor, and a Shanghai-based industrial and technology park called Zhangjiang High-Tech. SAIC Motor owns the majority (54%) of this joint venture. Alibaba and Zhangjiang High-Tech hold an 18 percent stake each. IM Motors&#8217;s main purpose is to design and manufacture fully electric high-end vehicles. Electric Dacia Sandero is coming! Company CEO Denis Le Vot has officially confirmed the Sandero EV, which will be the cheapest electric vehicle in the B segment hatchback category.
The electric Sandero is a candidate to be the cheapest electric just like the Spring. It will officially go on sale in 2027 or 2028. The vehicle, which will be based on the CMF-BEV platform, will be developed with the Renault 5 infrastructure.

Toyota Abandons Hydrogen Car

Toyota will switch to a unibody chassis design like Tesla. Toyota To Move A Monolithic Chassis Design Like Tesla

An electric vehicle with a range of 1,448 kilometers will come from Toyota. Faced with heavy criticism from both shareholders and environmentalists for being late in the electric vehicle transformation, Toyota announced that it will launch five new batteries by 2030, increasing its annual sales of electric vehicles to 3.5 million.
The first of the batteries that will carry the Japanese giant to this goal will come in 2026. This battery will offer a range of 615 kilometers. It is 20% cheaper than the battery of the bZ4X and will be charged from 10% to 80% in 20 minutes.

The second generation is aimed to reduce the cost by 40% and increase the range by 20% with the bipolar LFP battery. In a bipolar battery with a higher power density, only one current collector is used for the anode and cathode. Thus, the production speed can increase while the production cost decreases. This system is currently used in nickel-metal hydride batteries in hybrid vehicles.
Toyota will launch its third-generation nickel-cathode bipolar battery that will increase the range to 1,000 kilometers in 2027-2028. The company says it will be 10% cheaper than the first-generation solution.
Solid-state batteries are expected to meet with customers in the fourth and fifth generations. In this way, it is planned that the cost of vehicle batteries will decrease to reasonable levels, while the range will gradually increase to 1,448 kilometers.

Making its mark on the European market with the electric range extender Qashqai e-Power, Nissan gave the first signal for the transition to fully electric vehicles. Guillaume Cartier, Europe Manager of the Japanese automotive giant, announced that Nissan will start producing three popular SUV models electrified in the next few years.
Nissan&#8217;s best-selling models will officially get an electric version between 2025 and 2027. The company, which will first launch the electric Nissan Juke model in 2025, will use the CMF-EV platform, just like the <a href="https://www.licarco.com/nissan-ariya-e-4orce-87-kwh">Nissan Ariya</a> and <a href="https://www.licarco.com/renault-megane-e-tech-ev60">Renault Megane E-Tech</a>.

Along with the all-electric Juke, the e-Power version will also be on sale. In 2030, the company predicts that completely electric vehicles will account for half of its global sales. Nissan will remove gasoline and diesel engine models from production in a few years.
<h2>Three Electric SUVs Incoming</h2>
After the electric Juke, the fully electric Nissan Qashqai and X-Trail will be launched in 2026 and 2027.  The CEO of Nissan Europe stated that the company took the first step toward electrification with e-Power. All three SUVs would be available to consumers with electric models in a few years.
Nissan Ariya, which left the X-Trail behind in European sales last year, can offer a range of about 500 kilometers with a 90 kWh battery. It is most likely that the electric Qashqai and others would have a longer range.
Based on the timeline announced by the Nissan executive, it seems unlikely that these models will catch up with the solid-state batteries developed by the Japanese company. Nissan, which is developing its own solid electrolyte lithium-ion cells, planned to use these battery cells for the first time in 2028, which will provide much higher energy density and high-speed charging capability of 400 kW.

Electric Nissan Qashqai, Juke and X-Trail Officially Confirmed

Factorial Energy is a start-up working on the next generation of solid-state batteries. Over the past six years, it has significantly invested in solid-state battery technology. At the 2023 Consumers Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, they displayed a prototype of their new 100 Amp-hour(Ah) batteries.
Previously, the start-up demonstrated a 40 Ah solid-state battery cell prototype. Using its so-called Factorial Electrolyte System Technology(FEST), Factorial is also attempting to use current lithium-ion battery production facilities to reduce costs.
<h2>The Cell Enables Lighter EVs or a Longer Driving Range</h2>
The prototype cell was created as part of the collaborative development agreement between Factorial and Stellantis. It was first announced in November 2021. It fulfills solid-state performance claims without the catastrophic flaws seen in earlier generations of the technology. The technology will debut in the high-end market to test its effectiveness and producibility.
Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis, emphasized the prototype solid-state cells&#8217; 30% greater density than typical lithium-ion batteries during his keynote address. Depending on the manufacturer&#8217;s priorities, this might enable a lighter car or a longer driving range.
<h2>How Solid-State Battery Works?</h2>
A solid-state battery functions very similarly to a lithium-ion battery. The battery&#8217;s anode and cathode are constructed from materials that conduct electricity. Between the two electrodes that hold the charged ion particles, there is an electrolyte. Between the electrodes, the lithium ions circulate through the electrolyte. Current is created by the flow of these charged particles in a certain direction. It is referred to as charging when the ions flow from the cathode to the anode, or from the positive electrode to the negative electrode. Similarly to this, the battery is discharged and electricity is supplied to the load when ions move in the opposite way, from the anode to the cathode.

Factorial Reveals 100 Amp/Hour Solid-State Battery Cell Concept

Chinese-American battery manufacturer Farasis announced its new strategy and a new high-nickel battery product at a press event in Beijing. The next-gen lithium-ion battery is called SPS, or &#8220;Super Pouch Solution&#8221;. As the name suggests, Farasis is switching to CTP (Cell-to-Pack) battery design with bigger pouch cells. This new design will allow EVs using the latest cells from Farasis to travel up to 400 kilometers with 10 minutes of charging. Super Pouch will also support the direct-recycling process developed by the battery maker.

Thanks to the bigger, thicker pouch-cell form factor, Super Pouch batteries will reach a gravimetric pack-level energy density of 330 Wh/kg. Farasis confirmed that its new NMC cell will support 800V electrical architecture, up to 4C discharge rates, and 300-350 kW DC charging speeds that will allow 400 kilometers of range with a 10-minute charging session.
The module-less battery pack will include a two-sided liquid cooling system and heat dissipation plates on three sides of every pouch cell. Advanced thermal management system will not only quadruple heat dissipation efficiency but also extend battery life to more than 3,000 cycles.
Horizontally placed big pouch cells will allow Farasis to decrease the number of battery parts by 50%, reduce material costs by up to 33%, and increase volume utilization to 75%. The compact battery pack will be able to hold off more than 90 percent of its energy capacity in extreme cold weather conditions (-20 Celcius).

Currently, Farasis only offers high-nickel NMC811 and NMC622 pouch cells. With the new strategy, Chinese company will add some competitive options to its product portfolio, such as LFP, high-manganese NMC, and low-cost sodium-ion battery cells.
Thanks to a much improved semi-solid electrolyte and silicone anode, Farasis will be able to produce NMC cells with 300 to 400 Wh/kg energy density. After switching to a fully solid-state electrolyte in 2028, energy density levels will reach as far as 500 Wh/kilogram, which will hopefully be enough to be used in the aviation industry.
Next year, Farasis is getting into the LFP wagon as well. They will not only produce lithium-iron-phosphate batteries but also offer more energy-dense LMFP (Lithium manganese-iron-phosphate) cells. The energy density level will vary between 200 to 240 Wh/kg. These will not be the cheapest option Farasis will provide. Sodium-ion battery production is also due in 2023 with an energy density of 160 Wh/kg. Farasis predicts that its sodium-ion cells will be best for energy storage applications and entry-level EVs. Energy density-wise, these cells will go as high as 230 Wh/kg by 2030.
<h2>Battery Plants Will Cost Less, Thanks to Improved Battery Tech</h2>

Improved battery chemistry and much higher energy density will allow Farasis to cut manufacturing equipment costs by 50 percent. Super Pouch-producing factories will also require 60% less space for the same amount of battery production output.
Farasis also said that new battery plants will consume 35% less energy and lower production costs by 30%. Chinese company has agreed to open a battery plant in Turkey with domestic EV brand <a href="https://www.licarco.com/togg-c-suv">Togg</a>. This new plant will definitely produce next-gen pouch cells from Farasis starting in 2025. <a href="https://www.licarco.com/zeekr-001-single-motor-we">Geely</a> also established a joint venture with Farasis to construct multiple battery cell production sites and co-develop future battery technologies. Both of these partners will make use of Super Pouch&#8217;s cost-cutting, energy-dense design.

Farasis Unveils ‘Super Pouch’ Battery Cell, 400 KM Range in 10 Minutes

ProLogium, the world-famous solid-state <a href="https://www.licarco.com/news/lithium-ion-battery-cell-types-lfp-nmc-cells-explained">battery</a> company, reveals its plan for an $8 billion European battery plant. According to Reuters, Asian firm made a short list of countries for this huge investment. These countries are Germany, United Kingdom, France, and Poland.

Established in 2006, Taiwanese battery company first commercialized its lithium-ceramic battery with a phone case designed for HTC One Max in 2013. After proving its worth and a couple of successful funding rounds, ProLogium signed contracts with some promising Chinese EV manufacturers, namely NIO, Aiways, and Enovate. Rumors suggest that NIO will produce its 150-kWh battery pack option in collaboration with ProLogium.
LCB (Lithium-Ceramic Battery) manufacturer closed its latest investment round with $326 million funding in October 2021. It was in early 2022 that finally a Tier-1 automaker recognized ProLogium&#8217;s success and made an investment. Mercedes-Benz signed a partnership agreement with the company and invested almost €100 million into its technology. Two companies will co-develop and produce solid-state battery cells in the near future.
German carmaker is not the only one that is fond of ProLogium&#8217;s SSB (Solid-State Battery) technologies. In March 2022, Taiwanese e-scooter firm Gogoro announced the world&#8217;s first <a href="https://www.licarco.com/news/kymco-prepares-to-launch-its-battery-swapping-electric-scooters-in-europe">swappable scooter battery pack</a> developed by ProLogium. In May, global steel giant POSCO confirmed that it will develop and produce battery materials with the help of a partnership with ProLogium. Vinfast also revealed its plan to buy solid-state batteries from the company starting in 2024.
Aside from these very promising partnership agreements, ProLogium also received a strategic investment from China&#8217;s Reform Fund in June 2022. It will improve ProLogium&#8217;s relations with mainland China and give them a chance to establish their first solid-state battery plant there.
<h2>Solid-State EV Batteries is Coming Sooner Than You Think</h2>

Taiwanese battery maker will spend $8 billion over the next decade and construct a solid-state battery plant with an annual capacity of 120 GWh in Europe. The batteries soon to be manufactured in Europe will be used inside electric vehicles. Today&#8217;s news clearly shows that solid-state EV batteries are not as far as we think they are.
ProLogium&#8217;s first solid-state battery plant will start mass production early next year with a 3 GWh annual capacity. The first batch of lithium-ceramic cells will probably ship to Chinese EV maker NIO and e-scooter giant Gogoro. These two company has been teasing solid-state batteries for a while.
Solid-state EV batteries will dramatically improve range, thanks to higher energy density. They will also speed up charging sessions, EVs with solid-state batteries could be fully charged in a matter of minutes. The only problem is that these batteries tend to degrade quicker than ordinary lithium-ion batteries with liquid electrolytes. ProLogium has been trying to extend lithium-ceramic cells&#8217; lifetime for over a decade. It probably solved this critical problem, as hefty investment news highly suggests.

Solid-State Battery Maker ProLogium Invests $8 Billion on European Battery Plant

Solid Power’s plan to produce solid-state lithium-ion batteries goes back to 2017. It was reported that BMW and Solid Power set up a partnership to develop batteries without semi-liquid electrolytes. Since then, Ford has joined up as a significant investor in Solid Power.
Solid Power has been founded in 2012 and they are producing solid-state batteries with a sulfur-based electrolyte and an anode with higher silicon (more than %50) in it.

That number might seem too few, however, Solid Power will deliver them to BMW and Ford for testing in their battery electric vehicles. Solid Power CEO Doug Campell tells that “The installation of this EV cell pilot line will allow us to produce EV-scale cells suitable for initiating the formal automotive qualification process. Over the coming quarters, we will work to bring the EV cell pilot line up to its full operational capability and look forward to delivering EV-scale all-solid-state cells to our partners later this year.”
By the end of this year, the Colorado-based battery manufacturer plans to deliver to its partners, BMW and Ford, for testing in their prototypes. This will be a major step in the validation process for the solid-state batteries to be sold to other car manufacturers on a larger scale.
The company expects to bring other automakers to join Solid Power’s battery design in the first six months of 2024, which means that we can see the first vehicles with solid-state batteries in two years.

Solid Power to Start Production of Solid-State Batteries

Nissan Debuts Manufacturing Plant Prototype For Solid-State Batteries

In a global market with demand surpassing 3,000GWh by 2030, lithium iron phosphate (LFP) will overtake nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) as the dominating battery chemistry by 2028. By 2030, CATL plans to have 800GWh of yearly production capacity online.

Gotion High-Tech expects to be able to begin large-scale production of an LFP battery with an energy output of 230 Wh/kg by the end of the year.
