Regenerative braking technology is a bliss for the efficiency of <a href="https://www.licarco.com/cars">all-electric vehicles</a>. But it takes time to get used to this helpful feature. Sometimes it gets annoying or makes no sense on some occasions. There is an option to turn it off, but things get complicated with <a href="https://www.licarco.com/news/how-many-tesla-cars-have-been-sold">Tesla vehicles</a>. Let us explain.
If you want to turn off regenerative braking on your Tesla, you probably won&#8217;t find any disabling option in the menu. Because turning off regenerative braking is not possible on a Tesla. It is also impossible to adjust the regen on Tesla vehicles built since Q2 2020. Tesla Model S/3/X/Y vehicles built before that date can still be able to offer adjustments. You just need to navigate through the main screen and go to Driving, then change the &#8216;Regenerative Braking&#8217; to &#8216;Low&#8217; for reducing the level of regenerative braking.
Newer Tesla vehicles come with standard level regen as default. There is no &#8216;Regenerative Braking&#8217; adjustment option anymore. So, why wouldn&#8217;t Tesla allow its drivers to adjust regenerative braking? The main reason is that the vehicle range is heavily affected by not being able to recuperate the energy you otherwise lost to heat, etc by pressing the brake pedal. Other automakers agree with Tesla as well. Soon, every new electric vehicle on the market will probably remove the option to adjust regenerative braking for the sake of efficiency.

If you drive a Tesla vehicle built before Q2 2022, your car&#8217;s main screen comes with an option to adjust regenerative braking. How to Turn Off Regenerative Braking on a Tesla?

That is where higher-voltage electric vehicles are coming into play. Tesla recently announced its 1000-volt system and hinted more Tesla vehicles will benefit from the new tech. Future EVs will eventually make the switch from 400V to higher voltage systems.
800V or higher voltage electric vehicles are capable of delivering <a href="https://www.licarco.com/news/top-15-ev-charging-networks-in-the-us">ultra-fast charging</a> rates and offer higher performance while improving the efficiency of the all systems. 800V electric vehicles can only be possible by employing an 800V battery and using SiC (Silicone Carbide) inverter, proper cabling, OBC (On-board Charger), DCDC converter and other electrical equipments that support higher voltage levels. Conventional electric vehicles come with 400V electrical architecture as standard. Because of the voltage limit, today&#8217;s electric vehicles are limited to a maximum of 400-volt when they are connected to a DC charging station. In order to reach higher charge rates, current levels should go up to 600A or even more, which is not ideal for the infrastructure that charging stations heavily rely on.
The first higher-voltage EV is the Porsche Taycan, which has a cutting-edge 800V inverter built-in. Its DC charging rate can go as high as 270 kW with the proper charging setup. After that Hyundai and Kia developed an alternative 800V charging tech to avoid using an expensive 800V SiC inverter. In late 2021, Lucid Motors launched its first vehicle Lucid Air with an industry-leading 924V system developed by <a href="https://eepower.com/news/wolfspeed-announces-the-lucid-air-is-using-its-sic-power-modules/#">Wolfspeed</a>. And one year later, Tesla unveiled its first 1000V vehicle architecture with the launch of the tri-motor electric truck Tesla Semi. <a href="https://spectrum.ieee.org/ev-charging-800-volt">General Motors</a>, Volkswagen, and, of course, Chinese brands such as Aion, Avatr, Xpeng, Zeekr, BYD, Voyah and Li Auto have also been developing 800V high-voltage electrical systems for their EVs.
In this article, we researched our way into higher voltage electric vehicles and created a list of benefits of owning an 800V EV.
<h2>Faster Charging Compared to 400V Electric Vehicles</h2>

800V or higher voltage systems allow electric vehicles to be charged at as high as 480 kW, <a href="https://www.licarco.com/xpeng-g9-awd">Xpeng G9</a> proved. Regular 400V electric vehicles aren&#8217;t capable of doing that, because of the charging infrastructure&#8217;s current limit. When you plug your 400V vehicle into a DC charger, you limit your session to 400-volt. To provide faster charging speeds, EV charger should deliver more current, sometimes as high as 600A or even more (The third-gen Tesla Superchargers can deliver up to 660-amper). In order to increase the current, thicker and water-cooled cables are needed. Even using these expensive cables are not enough to lower down the charge efficiency, as conduction losses will increase up to nine times.
EV manufacturers have been developing 800V charging technologies to overcome this fast-charging problem. Some companies such as Porsche/Audi, Lucid Motors, and Xpeng use SiC inverters inside their EVs. These next-gen SiC inverters can handle higher voltages and also improve efficiency. Hyundai and Kia took a different approach to this matter. Korean automakers developed a technology that manages to provide 800-volt charging by using electric motors as generator and a regular IGBT inverter.
Thanks to more advanced electronics, 800-volt charging enables vehicle owners to reach up to 480 kW DC charging rates. For instance, Xpeng G9 and Aion LX Plus are already on sale that support ultra-fast 480+ kW charging. Lucid Air can go as high as 300 kW. Porsche Taycan did perform similiarly. Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 is also capable of delivering up to 240 kW DC charging speeds. 800V charging is definitely the future of EVs!
<h3>More Efficient &amp; More Powerful Electric Drivetrains</h3>

By switching to a 800V architecture, EV manufacturers can make use of higher voltage motors as well. Porsche is the first company to implement an 800V electric motor into its vehicles. Higher voltage improves overall power density of the motor unit and it reduces the maximum torque required to achieve the same output power due to extended RPM range.
As the DC link voltage of the EV motor units increase, the current levels decrease. This leads to lower copper loss and improves efficiency of the electrical traction systems. Higher voltage motors are also tend to produce more power than lower voltage solutions.
From the efficiency perspective, the next-gen SiC inverters used inside 800V electric vehicles are also much more efficient. <a href="https://www.licarco.com/byd-yangwang-u8">BYD recently unveiled</a> its first SiC inverter developed in-house, which scores an efficiency level of 99.5 percent.
<h3>800V Architectures Mean Lighter Electric Cars</h3>

800-volt electrical architectures can be created by using thinner cables between the battery pack and the inverter, DC charging port, OBC, and other equipments. As a result, 800V electric vehicles will use less copper and that would reduce the overall weight of the car.
Higher voltage electric motors are also significantly lighter and more power-dense than regular lower voltage units. That means 800V electric vehicles can be equipped with smaller, lighter motors. That creates more room for batteries as well.
<h3>Reduced Cost of Cabling, Less Copper Used Inside the Vehicle</h3>
Electric vehicles use more copper than any other vehicles. It takes 2 to 4 times more copper to build an EV than an ICE vehicle. But unlike 400V EVs, higher voltage systems don&#8217;t require thick copper cables. That will not only help manufacturers reduce the cost of cabling but also ease up the global copper supply chain. Because EV batteries and heavy investments in EV charging infrastructure have already been causing problems for the copper industry, thinner cables will help in the near future.
Here are some disadvantages of choosing 800V electrical system over a regular 400V architecture:
&#8211; Higher cost of electrical insulation and clearance
&#8211; Higher voltage battery packs tend to perform less reliable than 400V systems, because they contain larger number of series connections. The impact of single cell failure in a pack like this would be much higher than the 400V batteries with more parallel cells.
&#8211; Lower voltage battery packs are more energy-dense than the similiarly designed 800V batteries, which is the result of all the additional electrical clearance requirements around high voltage systems and the much larger BMS.

EVgo Inc., the largest public fast charging network for EVs in the US has announced that it has agreed on a new supply deal with Delta Electronics, a global provider of power and energy management solutions. The EVgo charging network in more than 30 states currently serves over 60 metropolitan areas with more than 850 fast charging locations. According to the EVgo, 1,000 fast chargers from Delta are expected to lower the supply chain risk and expand the fast-charging base target in the US.
This supply agreement with Delta is one of EVgo’s steps towards its expansion to provide more charging stations in the US. EVgo has recently announced its project with General Motors (GM) and Pilot Company. This project will result in 2,000 ultra-fast charging stalls and up to 500 travel centers of Pilot and Flying J across more than 40 states.

General Motors has formed a partnership with Pilot Company. <h2>The Charging Infrastructure For GM And Pilot Will Be Handled By EVgo</h2>
In a current statement, GM provided information about its plans to create a statewide charging infrastructure. It also described that both the Pilot Company and EVgo would cooperate. In order to construct the DC rapid-charging system, General Motors and the Pilot Company will operate together. This system will primarily include 2,000 stations at 500 Pilot and Flying J ride locations close to the main highways.

According to Keogh, electrification has leveled the playing field, and all automakers in this segment are facing similar struggles with leveling up production. He went on to say that the new electric variations have the potential to upend the status quo in terms of brand loyalty and consumer preferences. He stated,
“I think a buyer would historically say, ‘I buy F-150, I buy Ram, I buy Silverado.’ Now they might be saying, ‘I’m going to buy an electric one.’
“That reset moment gives a competitive chance to come in, whether it’s Rivian or whether it’s us.”

As the founder, Henrik Fisker said that the EV to launch after Pear will redefine the luxury sports cars of the future. The new sports car is under development at Fisker Magic Works, the automaker’s UK engineering complex. The company describes this car as a “proper British sports car” but says less about the fourth EV model.
Henrik Fisker stated that they have plenty of time to decide on the form of the fourth model. He also said that “We have many options because there are so many EV segments that still have no entries. If you&#8217;re looking for a Porsche Boxster-type car or a minivan, you have very few options.”

Fisker has partnered with Foxconn to produce Pear in targeted volumes. The Taiwanese tech manufacturing giant, a production partner of Apple, owns and manages the former General Motors Lordstown plant in Ohio, where the Pear will be produced.
The objective of Fisker is to sell EVs globally and one million cars per year. The company will be able to produce 250,000 units of Pear per year and producing Pear in Lordstown will be a milestone for the company in reaching its goal.

Fisker to launch four new EVs until 2025

Stellantis, the world’s fourth-largest automaker, plans to build a battery plant in the US. The announcement is made on Wednesday that the company will invest $4.1 billion in a new battery factory in Canada together with South Korea’s LG Energy Solution, formerly known as LG Chem.
Stellantis, the parent company of Dodge, Jeep, and Chrysler, created a joint venture with LG last year and the venture will build two planned battery factories. The first will be in Windsor, Ontario. The battery facility in Canada is expected to begin building later this year and will be launched in the first quarter of 2024.  The factory is expected to have an annual production capacity of more than 45-gigawatt hours and will create an estimated 2,500 new jobs.
The officials announced at the event on Wednesday that the second factory will be constructed in the US. Stellantis has also released that another venture with Samsung SDI will build a battery plant in North America.

Stellantis has stated that it targets to sell 5 million electric vehicles by 2030. The company has announced a detailed electrification plan in 2021 to produce EV versions of its existing cars, including Dodge Ram 1500 and multiple Jeep models.  The fourth-largest automaker has also shown the plans Chrysler Airflow concept.
While the auto industry is getting electrified day by day, battery producing capacity is also growing. Almost every major automaker globally has announced battery factory plans, including allocating billions to the production of batteries which are the most critical component for their vehicles.
Ford Company has three new battery plants that will have 129 GWh capacity per year whereas General Motors with LG Energy Solutions plans to build four new battery factories with a total annual capacity of 140GWh. Volkswagen is also aiming to have six battery cell production plants operating in Europe by 2030 for a total of 240GWh a year.
Stellantis have an objective of having a capacity of 45 gigawatt-hours (GWh) per year with the new Windsor factory while the latest battery plant plans in the US will contribute to the company’s battery production capacity.

After months of speculations, Rivian finally made its debut on the stock market. Electric vehicle startup&#8217;s stock began trading at $106, almost %40 higher than its expected price of $78. Rivian was founded in 2009 by RJ Scaringe, an MIT engineering grad who previously failed on some other EV startups. This time was different. Today Rivian reached an $86 billion valuation after only delivering a few dozens of electric pickups.
Rivian was backed by e-commerce giant Amazon last year. Jeff Bezos is the largest investor of the American EV-maker. Rivian&#8217;s stock market success is not a big surprise to the EV community since wealth investors valued the company $27.6 billion in its early 2021 funding round. 
The young automaker has two vehicles on its portfolio; electric pickup <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/rivian-r1t" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Rivian R1T</a> and the large electric SUV <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/rivian-r1s" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Rivian R1S</a>. R1T has four electric motors that produce 800 HP, 1,220 Nm of torque. Top speed is 200 km per hour. It has a 135-kWh battery pack which is enough for 300 miles of range. R1T has also similar specs, consumption figures slightly higher than its pickup version.
Rivian&#8217;s stock had a $109 price pre-market. Its valuation reached $99 billion right now. The CEO and founder of the company RJ Scaringe&#8217;s stake is worth more than $1.7 billion, as he welcomed into the billionaire&#8217;s club yesterday. But not everything is that promising for the auto industry&#8217;s one of the first electric pickup manufacturers.
<h2>Rivian still struggles with mass production and deliveries</h2>

According to forum posts published by the future Rivian owners and some Reddit entries, Rivian&#8217;s delivery process is not as smooth as its public offering. Some R1T pre-orders&#8217; delivery time pushed back from October 2021 to February 2022, in some cases to even April 2022. The reason for the delay is supply chain problems, according to the manufacturer. But some argue that Rivian is still struggling with mass production, as delivery-ready vehicles may show severe production-related issues.
Even though the company is now worth almost $100 billion which is more than legacy automakers Ford and General Motors, deliveries of Rivian&#8217;s first vehicle will most likely extend into the first quarter of 2022.
