Regenerative braking technology is a bliss for the efficiency of <a href="https://www.licarco.com/cars">all-electric vehicles</a>. But it takes time to get used to this helpful feature. Sometimes it gets annoying or makes no sense on some occasions. There is an option to turn it off, but things get complicated with <a href="https://www.licarco.com/news/how-many-tesla-cars-have-been-sold">Tesla vehicles</a>. Let us explain.
If you want to turn off regenerative braking on your Tesla, you probably won&#8217;t find any disabling option in the menu. Because turning off regenerative braking is not possible on a Tesla. It is also impossible to adjust the regen on Tesla vehicles built since Q2 2020. Tesla Model S/3/X/Y vehicles built before that date can still be able to offer adjustments. You just need to navigate through the main screen and go to Driving, then change the &#8216;Regenerative Braking&#8217; to &#8216;Low&#8217; for reducing the level of regenerative braking.
Newer Tesla vehicles come with standard level regen as default. There is no &#8216;Regenerative Braking&#8217; adjustment option anymore. So, why wouldn&#8217;t Tesla allow its drivers to adjust regenerative braking? The main reason is that the vehicle range is heavily affected by not being able to recuperate the energy you otherwise lost to heat, etc by pressing the brake pedal. Other automakers agree with Tesla as well. Soon, every new electric vehicle on the market will probably remove the option to adjust regenerative braking for the sake of efficiency.

If you drive a Tesla vehicle built before Q2 2022, your car&#8217;s main screen comes with an option to adjust regenerative braking. How to Turn Off Regenerative Braking on a Tesla?

If you want to play games with an Xbox controller on your Tesla, use a data cable (not a charge-only USB cable that lacks the data transfer function) to plug your controller into your Tesla Model 3/Y&#8217;s main screen via the USB-C ports in the center console or the USB-A port in the glove box. Step 4. In order to put your controller into pairing mode, first press the Xbox button for one second until it lights up. Then, press and hold the circular pair button located on the back of the controller for three seconds.

<a href="https://www.licarco.com/cars">Electric vehicles</a> are getting really popular, but the main concerns, such as short range and long charging times that hold conventional vehicle owners back from switching sides are still yet to be solved. That is where higher-voltage electric vehicles are coming into play. Tesla recently announced its 1000-volt system and hinted more Tesla vehicles will benefit from the new tech. Future EVs will eventually make the switch from 400V to higher voltage systems.
800V or higher voltage electric vehicles are capable of delivering <a href="https://www.licarco.com/news/top-15-ev-charging-networks-in-the-us">ultra-fast charging</a> rates and offer higher performance while improving the efficiency of the all systems. 800V electric vehicles can only be possible by employing an 800V battery and using SiC (Silicone Carbide) inverter, proper cabling, OBC (On-board Charger), DCDC converter and other electrical equipments that support higher voltage levels. Conventional electric vehicles come with 400V electrical architecture as standard. Because of the voltage limit, today&#8217;s electric vehicles are limited to a maximum of 400-volt when they are connected to a DC charging station. In order to reach higher charge rates, current levels should go up to 600A or even more, which is not ideal for the infrastructure that charging stations heavily rely on.
The first higher-voltage EV is the Porsche Taycan, which has a cutting-edge 800V inverter built-in. Its DC charging rate can go as high as 270 kW with the proper charging setup. After that Hyundai and Kia developed an alternative 800V charging tech to avoid using an expensive 800V SiC inverter. In late 2021, Lucid Motors launched its first vehicle Lucid Air with an industry-leading 924V system developed by <a href="https://eepower.com/news/wolfspeed-announces-the-lucid-air-is-using-its-sic-power-modules/#">Wolfspeed</a>. And one year later, Tesla unveiled its first 1000V vehicle architecture with the launch of the tri-motor electric truck Tesla Semi. <a href="https://spectrum.ieee.org/ev-charging-800-volt">General Motors</a>, Volkswagen, and, of course, Chinese brands such as Aion, Avatr, Xpeng, Zeekr, BYD, Voyah and Li Auto have also been developing 800V high-voltage electrical systems for their EVs.
In this article, we researched our way into higher voltage electric vehicles and created a list of benefits of owning an 800V EV.
<h2>Faster Charging Compared to 400V Electric Vehicles</h2>

800V or higher voltage systems allow electric vehicles to be charged at as high as 480 kW, <a href="https://www.licarco.com/xpeng-g9-awd">Xpeng G9</a> proved. Regular 400V electric vehicles aren&#8217;t capable of doing that, because of the charging infrastructure&#8217;s current limit. When you plug your 400V vehicle into a DC charger, you limit your session to 400-volt. To provide faster charging speeds, EV charger should deliver more current, sometimes as high as 600A or even more (The third-gen Tesla Superchargers can deliver up to 660-amper). In order to increase the current, thicker and water-cooled cables are needed. Even using these expensive cables are not enough to lower down the charge efficiency, as conduction losses will increase up to nine times.
EV manufacturers have been developing 800V charging technologies to overcome this fast-charging problem. Some companies such as Porsche/Audi, Lucid Motors, and Xpeng use SiC inverters inside their EVs. These next-gen SiC inverters can handle higher voltages and also improve efficiency. Hyundai and Kia took a different approach to this matter. Korean automakers developed a technology that manages to provide 800-volt charging by using electric motors as generator and a regular IGBT inverter.
Thanks to more advanced electronics, 800-volt charging enables vehicle owners to reach up to 480 kW DC charging rates. For instance, Xpeng G9 and Aion LX Plus are already on sale that support ultra-fast 480+ kW charging. Lucid Air can go as high as 300 kW. Porsche Taycan did perform similiarly. Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 is also capable of delivering up to 240 kW DC charging speeds. 800V charging is definitely the future of EVs!
<h3>More Efficient &amp; More Powerful Electric Drivetrains</h3>

By switching to a 800V architecture, EV manufacturers can make use of higher voltage motors as well. Porsche is the first company to implement an 800V electric motor into its vehicles. Higher voltage improves overall power density of the motor unit and it reduces the maximum torque required to achieve the same output power due to extended RPM range.
As the DC link voltage of the EV motor units increase, the current levels decrease. This leads to lower copper loss and improves efficiency of the electrical traction systems. Higher voltage motors are also tend to produce more power than lower voltage solutions.
From the efficiency perspective, the next-gen SiC inverters used inside 800V electric vehicles are also much more efficient. <a href="https://www.licarco.com/byd-yangwang-u8">BYD recently unveiled</a> its first SiC inverter developed in-house, which scores an efficiency level of 99.5 percent.
<h3>800V Architectures Mean Lighter Electric Cars</h3>

800-volt electrical architectures can be created by using thinner cables between the battery pack and the inverter, DC charging port, OBC, and other equipments. As a result, 800V electric vehicles will use less copper and that would reduce the overall weight of the car.
Higher voltage electric motors are also significantly lighter and more power-dense than regular lower voltage units. That means 800V electric vehicles can be equipped with smaller, lighter motors. That creates more room for batteries as well.
<h3>Reduced Cost of Cabling, Less Copper Used Inside the Vehicle</h3>
Electric vehicles use more copper than any other vehicles. It takes 2 to 4 times more copper to build an EV than an ICE vehicle. But unlike 400V EVs, higher voltage systems don&#8217;t require thick copper cables. That will not only help manufacturers reduce the cost of cabling but also ease up the global copper supply chain. Because EV batteries and heavy investments in EV charging infrastructure have already been causing problems for the copper industry, thinner cables will help in the near future.
Here are some disadvantages of choosing 800V electrical system over a regular 400V architecture:
&#8211; Higher cost of electrical insulation and clearance
&#8211; Higher voltage battery packs tend to perform less reliable than 400V systems, because they contain larger number of series connections. The impact of single cell failure in a pack like this would be much higher than the 400V batteries with more parallel cells.
&#8211; Lower voltage battery packs are more energy-dense than the similiarly designed 800V batteries, which is the result of all the additional electrical clearance requirements around high voltage systems and the much larger BMS.

Chinese-American battery manufacturer Farasis announced its new strategy and a new high-nickel battery product at a press event in Beijing. The next-gen lithium-ion battery is called SPS, or &#8220;Super Pouch Solution&#8221;. As the name suggests, Farasis is switching to CTP (Cell-to-Pack) battery design with bigger pouch cells. This new design will allow EVs using the latest cells from Farasis to travel up to 400 kilometers with 10 minutes of charging. Super Pouch will also support the direct-recycling process developed by the battery maker.

Thanks to the bigger, thicker pouch-cell form factor, Super Pouch batteries will reach a gravimetric pack-level energy density of 330 Wh/kg. Farasis confirmed that its new NMC cell will support 800V electrical architecture, up to 4C discharge rates, and 300-350 kW DC charging speeds that will allow 400 kilometers of range with a 10-minute charging session.
The module-less battery pack will include a two-sided liquid cooling system and heat dissipation plates on three sides of every pouch cell. Advanced thermal management system will not only quadruple heat dissipation efficiency but also extend battery life to more than 3,000 cycles.
Horizontally placed big pouch cells will allow Farasis to decrease the number of battery parts by 50%, reduce material costs by up to 33%, and increase volume utilization to 75%. The compact battery pack will be able to hold off more than 90 percent of its energy capacity in extreme cold weather conditions (-20 Celcius).

Currently, Farasis only offers high-nickel NMC811 and NMC622 pouch cells. With the new strategy, Chinese company will add some competitive options to its product portfolio, such as LFP, high-manganese NMC, and low-cost sodium-ion battery cells.
Thanks to a much improved semi-solid electrolyte and silicone anode, Farasis will be able to produce NMC cells with 300 to 400 Wh/kg energy density. After switching to a fully solid-state electrolyte in 2028, energy density levels will reach as far as 500 Wh/kilogram, which will hopefully be enough to be used in the aviation industry.
Next year, Farasis is getting into the LFP wagon as well. They will not only produce lithium-iron-phosphate batteries but also offer more energy-dense LMFP (Lithium manganese-iron-phosphate) cells. The energy density level will vary between 200 to 240 Wh/kg. These will not be the cheapest option Farasis will provide. Sodium-ion battery production is also due in 2023 with an energy density of 160 Wh/kg. Farasis predicts that its sodium-ion cells will be best for energy storage applications and entry-level EVs. Energy density-wise, these cells will go as high as 230 Wh/kg by 2030.

Improved battery chemistry and much higher energy density will allow Farasis to cut manufacturing equipment costs by 50 percent. Super Pouch-producing factories will also require 60% less space for the same amount of battery production output.
Farasis also said that new battery plants will consume 35% less energy and lower production costs by 30%. Chinese company has agreed to open a battery plant in Turkey with domestic EV brand <a href="https://www.licarco.com/togg-c-suv">Togg</a>. This new plant will definitely produce next-gen pouch cells from Farasis starting in 2025. <a href="https://www.licarco.com/zeekr-001-single-motor-we">Geely</a> also established a joint venture with Farasis to construct multiple battery cell production sites and co-develop future battery technologies. Both of these partners will make use of Super Pouch&#8217;s cost-cutting, energy-dense design.

According to Lunaz, it is modular but still brand agnostic. It will mix and match existing components to develop the best solution for each truck. It claims that its transformed trash trucks are &#8220;significantly cheaper&#8221; than buying a brand new electric truck. They save 80 percent of the embedded carbon (related to manufacturing) by choosing this type of truck over a new electric truck. Lunaz Repurposed Mercedes-Benz Econic Garbage Truck

Japan&#8217;s four major motorcycle original equipment manufacturers—Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, and Yamaha—have been collaborating on interchangeable electric vehicle batteries and associated systems since 2019.
The companies compromised on a single EV standard that their interchangeable batteries must fulfill in March 2021. That, like systematic charging plugs for our electronic devices, should make life so much easier for customers, so it appeared to be a positive move. Honda had unveiled its new Mobile Power Pack by November 2021. It was significant because that was the first component to match the Big Four&#8217;s battery swapping criteria.
The Fantastic Four have just publicly stated their next step in this project. The consortium is forming a new company named Gachaco in collaboration with the Japanese petroleum company Eneos. The new company was officially established on April 1, 2022. Its two objectives will be to share formalized swappable batteries for electric motorcycles and to develop the required infrastructure to accommodate this service.

Japanese Fantastic Four Create Battery Swap Company For Motorcycles

Volvo Cars and Ford Motor Company have announced that they are coming together through a startup to initiate a first-of-its-kind electric vehicle battery recycling program in California.
In a press release, the e-waste startup, Redwood Materials, has stated that the two companies will collaborate to create safe, efficient, and effective recovery approaches for the dead battery packs of hybrid and electric vehicles. First supported by Volvo and Ford, this battery recycling program will accept all lithium-ion and nickel-metal hydride batteries in California.
Redwood Materials recycles lithium-ion batteries, phones, laptops’ power tools, and other e-waste. In September, Ford and the Nevada-based startup agreed on determining the pathways to recycle batteries of Ford and Lincoln vehicles.
Redwood Materials will invest more than $30 million in electrification by 2025. As a part of this plan, Ford had invested $50 million in Redwood to help the startup’s production line while the relationship between Volvo and Redwood is recently established.

Redwood was founded in 2017 by JB Straubel, who co-founded <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/2021-tesla-model-s-plaid/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tesla</a>, where he served as CTO and then in an advisory role through 2019.
The main objective of the Nevada-based startup is to create a circular supply chain by scrapping and processing discarded batteries and extracting materials like cobalt, nickel, and lithium that are typically mined, and then supplying those back to Panasonic and other customers, including Amazon, Ford, and AESC Envision in Tennessee. On average, Redwood claims that its technology can salvage more than 95% of elements like lithium, nickel, cobalt, and copper.
Redwood is advancing its recycling operations to collect used battery packs of electric vehicles. Ford and Volvo decided to choose California for the joint recycling program with Redwood since it has been a steady leader in the electrification of transportation and houses.
Jim Farley, CEO of Ford Motor Company, described the Redwood team as “world-class technology and know-how”. He also stated: &#8220;This new program with Redwood Materials will help Ford lead America&#8217;s transition to sustainable and carbon-neutral EV manufacturing and ultimately help make electric vehicles more environmentally responsible and affordable for our customers.&#8221;

Lithium-ion batteries tend to lose their energy capacity over time. That is mostly due to extended usage. According to a study published by Cox Automotive, average car buyers assume that an electric vehicle battery only lasts around 100,000 kilometers (65,000 miles). Although electric car batteries are prone to losing their charge capacity, like every other energy storage solution, these batteries use state-of-the-art anode/cathode chemistries that allow them to last at least 10 years, sometimes even up to 20 years. Customers shouldn&#8217;t worry about wearing their battery any time soon.
Batteries will eventually start to degrade and lose charging capacity over time. The average loss of battery capacity is around 1.5 to 2.5 percent per year. According to Plug In America, the luxury sedan Tesla Model S’s battery only loses 5 percent of its original battery capacity over the first 80,000 km (50,000 miles).
Most manufacturers, including Nissan, Tesla, and Toyota, offer an eight-year (or 160,000 km/100,000 miles) warranty on their electric car batteries. Some automakers, such as Hyundai, provide lifetime coverage for their EV batteries. BMW, Chevrolet, Tesla, Volkswagen, and Nissan will also cover a battery pack replacement if its capacity drops to a certain percentage (70% in most cases). If the car has less than 70% of its original capacity before the end of the eighth year, the warranty will cover all battery replacement costs.

Smartphones have no thermal management for the battery, and fast charging will result in a hot battery. In hot temperatures, battery reactions will speed up and degrade the battery quicker. That’s why smartphone batteries rarely last more than two years.
Electric cars, on the other hand, have advanced thermal management systems, which help the battery pack to optimize its efficiency and eliminate harmful effects of cold/hot temperatures caused by weather, heavy usage/lack of usage, etc.

According to <a href="https://about.bnef.com/blog/battery-pack-prices-fall-to-an-average-of-132-kwh-but-rising-commodity-prices-start-to-bite/">Bloomberg NEF</a>, the average price of lithium-ion batteries dropped from $1,160 per kWh in 2010 to $132 in 2021. Thanks to lower prices, electric car battery replacement costs are also dropping sharply. In order to decrease battery repair bills, automakers are also adopting the remanufactured battery pack strategy, similar to Tesla&#8217;s lower-cost replacement packs with refurbished battery modules.
There is sufficient data on the internet that tells us how much does a Tesla battery cost. According to <a href="https://www.findmyelectric.com/blog/tesla-battery-replacement-cost-explained/">FindmyElectric.com</a>, Tesla Model S full battery replacement should cost between $13,000 to $20,000. A full battery replacement of the premium electric SUV Model X would be around $14,000-$21,000. Tesla&#8217;s mid-size EVs, namely Model 3 and Model Y, are cheaper to repair. The battery pack replacement of these models costs $11,000-$16,000 including labor, miscellaneous parts. The exact replacement cost varies depending on the condition of the battery pack.
Not all EV manufacturers use remanufactured packs to make battery replacement more affordable. Ford, for example, asks more than $43,000 for a brand-new Mustang Mach-E battery pack in Canada. But Ford dealers in the US will charge you around $18,000 to $24,000 for a Mach-E replacement.
<h3>Does Electric Car Battery Disposal Cause Pollution?</h3>
Electric vehicles technically don’t produce any exhaust emissions like carbon monoxide (CO) and NOx. These types of vehicles are definitely cleaner than ICE vehicles. But that doesn’t mean EVs don’t have any carbon footprint. Electric cars use electricity to charge up and a high portion of the electricity generation causes heavy pollution.
EVs are also indirectly polluting the environment with their battery packs. The production and disposal of lithium-ion batteries definitely cause pollution. Of course, batteries and electric vehicles are getting cleaner every day, thanks to stricter rules implemented by governments that encourage manufacturers to act more environment-friendly, and promising developments in the lithium-ion battery recycling industry.
When electric car batteries reach the end of their life, they can be recycled for valuable materials including lithium, nickel, manganese, cobalt, and graphite, which means electric car battery disposal can decrease EV&#8217;s carbon footprint.
Tesla already recycles batteries from its vehicles. Volkswagen’s pilot recycling plant for used EV batteries has also begun operations. Elon Musk expects the auto industry to have enough battery materials inside the existing EV fleet in the next 30-40 years, eliminating the need for mining new materials. The first European lithium-ion battery cell manufacturer Northvolt produced its first cell made “100 percent from recycled nickel, manganese, and cobalt”. But approximately half of the materials in an EV battery pack are recycled. There is still a very long way to go in the battery recycling business.

<h3>Is It Possible to Repair/Recondition An Electric Car Battery?</h3>
When auto services accept an electric car with the inspection of battery failure, first they run a routine diagnosis and determine how much of the original energy storage capacity the battery can still provide. If there are broken battery modules, and the total capacity degraded to a level lower than 70 percent, the electric car battery will most likely be replaced with a new unit.
The electric car services usually don&#8217;t just swap bad modules for good ones, instead, they replace the entire battery with a brand new or remanufactured one. After a new battery pack is installed, the broken/old one is sent back to factories where broken modules will be replaced with good ones, and any other battery pack problems are solved.
Tesla has been using a similar approach to fix battery packs. Ideally for Tesla, all replacement batteries are remanufactured.
