Additionally, it emphasizes that the newly developed smart thermal management system enhances battery life by continuously conditioning the battery and reduces charging time.
Regarding the engine, the company claims a 50% increase in efficiency compared to the first-generation electric Audis and states that it can produce more power with smaller motors by increasing power density by 62%. Giga Nevada is capable of producing 35 GWh of battery cells annually, which is enough to manufacture around 500K electric vehicles per year. But that is way less, not even half of what Tesla needs to put into its EVs. Because of that, LG Chem and CATL, two major battery cell suppliers of Tesla, have been shipping billions of cells to Tesla factories every year.
Texas-based EV maker is finally taking this matter into its own hands. 4680 cell manufacturing process is still in the works before reaching perfection at Kato Road. The dry-coating technique that helps Tesla reduce manufacturing costs and the environmental impact of cell production is yet to be scaled up. But there is enough time to improve before starting mass production at the new factory near Giga Nevada.
The estimated capacity of this factory will be 100 GWh, a huge capacity to produce enough batteries for 2 million electric vehicles. Although Tesla and Panasonic jointly own the Giga Nevada battery facility, the Semi will really go into serial production in the Austin-based Gigafactory Texas. The vehicle assembly line there, however, has not yet begun production. In a brand-new structure next to Reno&#8217;s Gigafactory 1, Tesla builds up a small truck production line with a weekly capacity of five cars.
Approximately 250 Semi trucks would be produced annually. But Tesla has considerably larger ambitions for the vehicle once it moves manufacturing to the Gigafactory in Texas. The EV manufacturer disclosed that it plans to increase Tesla Semi manufacturing to 50,000 cars annually in 2024. However, it appears that the company&#8217;s production goal for 2022 is far more modest, set at 100 Semi electric vehicles.

<a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/cars" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Electric vehicle</a> market is growing at rapid speeds. Automakers produce EVs so fast that they couldn&#8217;t find enough batteries to buy anywhere. To cope with customers&#8217; extreme demand, lithium-ion battery manufacturers have been investing heavily. In today&#8217;s battery investment news, it&#8217;s <a href="https://www.licarco.com/byd-seal">BYD</a>&#8216;s turn! Buffett-backed Chinese company will spend around $4.2 billion to construct a new battery factory in Yichun, a city known as the &#8216;Asia Capital of Lithium&#8216;.
Yichun is a prefecture-level city in China&#8217;s Jiangxi state. It holds the title of &#8216;Asia Capital of Lithium&#8217;, because of its lithium-rich lepidolite reserves. According to official estimates revealed by the Chinese authorities, Yichun holds 12 percent of world lithium oxide reserves. The city has around 2.58 million tonnes worth of proven lithium oxide.

BYD will invest $4.2B to not only open a new lithium-ion battery cell factory but also a lithium carbonate refinement facility with an annual capacity of 100,000 tonnes. The cell factory will be able to produce at an annual capacity of 30 GWh when completed. Shenzhen-based tech giant will mostly produce LFP cells there. BYD has become the third largest battery maker in the world by outselling Panasonic this year. All thanks to its new LFP cells called &#8220;Blade Battery&#8221;. In a recent market report published by SNE Research, BYD holds a market share of 12 percent in the whole lithium-ion battery industry.

BYD&#8217;s huge battery investments are paying off. It has become the newest battery cell supplier of the world&#8217;s biggest EV maker Tesla. Elon Musk&#8217;s company is going to start using LFP cells purchased from BYD in its vehicles soon. We reported earlier that Tesla will integrate BYD&#8217;s blade battery cells into a structural pack and assemble the latest version of <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/2021-tesla-model-y-long-range" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Model Y</a>. Electric SUV&#8217;s latest standard range version will be made in <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/news/how-many-tesla-gigafactories" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Giga Berlin</a> and enter the European market in the coming months.
BYD is not only a lithium battery manufacturer. It has also dozens of EVs available to Chinese customers. But it will change in the coming months, as BYD has already established partnerships with dealers in Germany, Netherlands, and Sweden. BYD-branded electric cars are already on sale in Australia, Japan, and Norway. Chinese company uses its own battery and battery cells inside its cars. As of April 2022, BYD ceased the production of ICE vehicles. From now on, only hybrids and fully electric BYDs will be built and sold.

BYD invests $4.2B to open a 30 GWh battery factory in ‘Asia Capital of Lithium’

EV sales continue to grow and have reached a record high in Q2 with a 13% increase. Tesla as a customer of Panasonic is the leader in sales. To meet such high demand for batteries, Panasonic is trying to double down its production. The company published plans in April to invest 400 billion yen (approximately $2.9 billion) in “growth areas” including automotive batteries and supply chain software.
In December, Panasonic Energy of North America announced that a production facility is planned to be built in Reno, Nevada in addition to its existing production at Tesla’s Gigafactory 1 site in Sparks, Nevada.

The Japanese giant has another plan to increase its battery production: a new EV battery plant in Kansas. The governor&#8217;s office of Kansas stated in a press release that Panasonic has picked De Soto, Kansas for its new project that will bring up to $4 billion in investments and create up to 8,000 jobs.
In the press release, it is stated that the Attracting Powerful Economic Expansion Act (SB 347), or APEX Act is the motivation for the incentive decision. “When the Kansas Legislature passed the APEX legislation, this was the kind of megaproject we had in mind,” Representative Ron Ryckman of Kansas said.
After the deal between Panasonic and Kansas State is signed, the governor’s office has revealed the details of the $829.2-million incentive package that includes a $500 million investment tax credit that stretches over five years and a $234 million payroll rebate paid over 10 years, among other sweeteners.
The new factory in De Soto is planned to be larger than Panasonic and Tesla’s Gigafactory in Nevada. Panasonic announced in February that the mass production of lithium-ion batteries for Tesla is planned to begin by 2024.

A $4-billion EV battery plant by Panasonic will be built in Kansas

Panasonic announced a new technology breakthrough that allows more energy-dense battery cells to be produced, Reuters reported. Japanese lithium-ion battery manufacturer has kept improving its tech, as this new development will surely challenge its rivals across the Pacific. Panasonic plans to achieve a 20 percent higher energy density by implementing a new mix of additives into its NCA cells.
<a href="https://www.licarco.com/cars?filter=tesla">Tesla</a> has been challenging its battery partner for further improvements ever since they first collaborated. This new improvement will allow Tesla vehicles to offer more than 62 miles, or 100 kilometers of range, without increasing the battery weight. As of today, Panasonic can produce NCA cells that offer 750 Wh/liter volumetric and 271 Wh/kg gravimetric energy density. According to Shoichiro Watanabe, chief technology officer of the Japanese firm, their latest tech will allow battery cells to have a higher nominal voltage than 3.6-3.7V, as a result, hold 20 percent more energy. That makes energy density go above 300 Wh/kg in the next few years.
A battery pack filled with Panasonic&#8217;s latest <a href="https://www.licarco.com/news/lithium-ion-battery-cell-types-lfp-nmc-cells-explained">lithium-ion cells</a> can allow Tesla Model Y to travel up to 100 kilometers more when fully charged. The additives that Panasonic planning to use will simply help NCA (Nickel cobalt aluminum) cells to endure higher nominal voltage levels, store more electrical energy, and perform as better as the current formula.
<h2>Panasonic Will Adopt 4680 Cell Type</h2>
Panasonic will not only implement a new tech into its cells but also adopt Tesla&#8217;s famous 4680 cell design. The large cylindrical cell form will help Panasonic improve energy density even more. Tesla is currently producing 4680 NMC cells at its Kato Road and <a href="https://www.licarco.com/news/how-many-tesla-gigafactories">Giga Texas</a> plants.
4680 cells will be a part of the new structural battery pack used inside the Texas-made Tesla Model Y. Energy-dense cell design increases the rigidness of the vehicle, and reduces the overall weight by simply eliminating the need for many additional chassis parts that typical battery packs need to be attached.
Elon Musk has plans to implement this new <a href="https://www.licarco.com/news/what-is-structural-battery-ctc-ctb-ev-battery-packs-explained">structural battery pack</a> into other vehicles such as Model 3 and Cybertruck. To supply the necessary battery cells, Tesla invited numerous battery producers, including Panasonic, LG Chem, and Guoxuan High-Tech to join Tesla on its mission to larger battery cells. We will surely see 4680 cells inside battery packs more often in the near future, and the Japanese tech giant will not give up easily on its leading position as the main battery supplier of Tesla.

Volvo Cars and Ford Motor Company have announced that they are coming together through a startup to initiate a first-of-its-kind electric vehicle battery recycling program in California.
In a press release, the e-waste startup, Redwood Materials, has stated that the two companies will collaborate to create safe, efficient, and effective recovery approaches for the dead battery packs of hybrid and electric vehicles. First supported by Volvo and Ford, this battery recycling program will accept all lithium-ion and nickel-metal hydride batteries in California.
Redwood Materials recycles lithium-ion batteries, phones, laptops’ power tools, and other e-waste. In September, Ford and the Nevada-based startup agreed on determining the pathways to recycle batteries of Ford and Lincoln vehicles.
Redwood Materials will invest more than $30 million in electrification by 2025. As a part of this plan, Ford had invested $50 million in Redwood to help the startup’s production line while the relationship between Volvo and Redwood is recently established.

Redwood was founded in 2017 by JB Straubel, who co-founded <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/2021-tesla-model-s-plaid/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tesla</a>, where he served as CTO and then in an advisory role through 2019.
The main objective of the Nevada-based startup is to create a circular supply chain by scrapping and processing discarded batteries and extracting materials like cobalt, nickel, and lithium that are typically mined, and then supplying those back to Panasonic and other customers, including Amazon, Ford, and AESC Envision in Tennessee. On average, Redwood claims that its technology can salvage more than 95% of elements like lithium, nickel, cobalt, and copper.
Redwood is advancing its recycling operations to collect used battery packs of electric vehicles. Ford and Volvo decided to choose California for the joint recycling program with Redwood since it has been a steady leader in the electrification of transportation and houses.
Jim Farley, CEO of Ford Motor Company, described the Redwood team as “world-class technology and know-how”. He also stated: &#8220;This new program with Redwood Materials will help Ford lead America&#8217;s transition to sustainable and carbon-neutral EV manufacturing and ultimately help make electric vehicles more environmentally responsible and affordable for our customers.&#8221;
