Chinese electric vehicle brands are a top priority at Licarco because the EV market has become increasingly dominated by pure electric Chinese cars. Last year, China sold more EVs than the rest of the world. BYD, NIO, ORA, and Geely are some of the biggest Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers.
Even though China has been producing millions of EVs for years, American drivers wouldn&#8217;t be able to buy one. It&#8217;s because vehicles made in China are subjected to a %27.5 import tariff in the US. Due to heavy taxation, Chinese brands had not prioritized the US auto market in their global plans. But that&#8217;s changing quickly, as more and more Chinese EV marques are expanding their reach towards western markets, including United States.
In this article, we gathered a list of Chinese EV brands and their expansion plans. We will update this post when an announcement is made regarding any Chinese EV maker&#8217;s global expansion.

Leapmotor, an emerging EV brand backed by Dahua Technology, has plans to enter the European market in 2023. The brand officials confirmed that Leapmotor would open showrooms in Europe. To finance its globalization plans, Hangzhou-based carmaker filed its first IPO that worths around $1.5bn at Hong Kong Exchange.
The brand has already started to sell electric vehicles in Turkey and Israel, starting with the compact hatchback called <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/leapmotor-t03" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Leapmotor T03</a>. The first EV to be showcased in Europe will probably be the electric sedan C01. With its sleek design, cell-to-chassis technology, and impressive performance figures, <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/leapmotor-c01" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Leapmotor C01</a> will attract a lot of customers.

BYD first entered Norway with the full-size electric SUV called <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/2022-byd-tang-ev" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tang EV</a>. Over the next months, China&#8217;s biggest EV manufacturer will start selling vehicles all over the world. BYD EVs are already available in Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. European countries where BYD will start operations before the end of 2022 are the United Kingdom, Germany, Denmark, Netherlands, and Sweden.
BYD will export these three electric vehicle models to Old Continent; compact electric SUV <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/byd-atto-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BYD Atto 3</a>, electric sedan <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/2022-byd-han-ev" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BYD Han EV</a>, and BYD Tang EV. India, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam will also be subject to BYD&#8217;s global expansion, as official statements confirmed.
Unfortunately, BYD has no plans to enter the American market yet. But there is a possibility of Chinese EV maker using its new premium brand, which reportedly will deliver a $145K+ luxury EV to the market, to attract customers from United States.

NIO is one of the first Chinese automakers, which officially confirms its entry into the US market. NIO-branded EVs will be on sale in the US starting in 2025. Large-size SUV ES8 is currently being tested on US roads. There is no official timeline for the US launch, though.
Chinese EV marque will also start selling EVs in Germany, Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway. The next move on the global plans is to enter more European markets such as Austria, Belgium, France, Hungary, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Portugal, and the Czech Republic. NIO is hoping to sell electric vehicles in 25 countries by 2025.

In February 2022, Xpeng opened its first showroom in Stockholm, Sweden. Guangzhou-based company will start selling EVs in Denmark, Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden before the year ends. The company&#8217;s first offering will be the mid-range electric sedan <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/xpeng-p5-600p" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Xpeng P5</a>.
Xpeng expects half of its electric vehicle sales in 2025 to come from outside of China. Europe is its first choice but customers from the US will eventually get a taste of Xpeng&#8217;s popular cars in the near future. Chinese brand signed a dealership agreement with a Turkish company to sell EVs in Turkey as well. The first vehicle to be put on sale in Turkey will be <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/xpeng-p7-4wd-high-performance" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Xpeng P7</a>.

Geely is a global automotive group. There are brands under the Geely Group that sell vehicles all over the world. Zeekr will be joining those brands next year by entering the European market. EV-only brand will make it official in early 2023, as Zeekr announced.
Zeekr has only one model on sale called Zeekr 001, but it has plans to launch a total of seven EVs by 2025. Its 2025 sales goal in Europe is 100,000 vehicles. There is no word whether Zeekr will sell EVs in Scandinavia, western/or eastern Europe. Follow us for more details.

Great Wall Motors (GWM) has officially entered the United Kingdom and Germany with its EV-only brand ORA. GWM introduced the first vehicles to be put on sale in Europe earlier this year. <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/ora-cat-64-kwh" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ORA Cat/Funky Cat</a> is the first one for the western market.
The company appoints Emil Frey to distribute vehicles starting in Germany. That is not the first time GWM to choose Germany for its global expansion. Chinese automaker&#8217;s battery division SVOLT opened a battery plant in Germany as well. Recently SVOLT announced its second investment worth €2.0bn, which would enable them to produce lithium-ion battery cells directly in the country.

If you want to play games with an Xbox controller on your Tesla, use a data cable (not a charge-only USB cable that lacks the data transfer function) to plug your controller into your Tesla Model 3/Y&#8217;s main screen via the USB-C ports in the center console or the USB-A port in the glove box. Step 1. Buy a wireless adapter/dongle for pairing your Xbox controller. <a href="https://amzn.to/3HCaTTv">8Bitdo Wireless USB Adapter 2</a> and <a href="https://amzn.to/3jyyigK">MAYFLASH Magic NS 2</a> are two of the most popular choices.
Step 2. Plug the wireless adapter into your Tesla via USB data ports. Use a USB-A to USB-C adapter if necessary. Please be aware that newer Model 3/Y vehicles don&#8217;t have USB data ports in the center console. You will need to use the USB-A port inside the glove compartment.
Step 3. Put your wireless adapter into pairing mode. 8Bitdo&#8217;s pairing button is on the bottom, whereas the Magic NS&#8217;s pairing mode can be activated by pressing the black button on the side until the light goes green and blinks fast.

Step 4. In order to put your controller into pairing mode, first press the Xbox button for one second until it lights up. Then, press and hold the circular pair button located on the back of the controller for three seconds.
Step 5. Once the wireless adapter and Xbox controller ared paired up, the lights on both of these devices will stop blinking. You will see a notification message on your Tesla&#8217;s screen that confirms the pairing.

Regenerative braking technology is a bliss for the efficiency of <a href="https://www.licarco.com/cars">all-electric vehicles</a>. But it takes time to get used to this helpful feature. Sometimes it gets annoying or makes no sense on some occasions. There is an option to turn it off, but things get complicated with <a href="https://www.licarco.com/news/how-many-tesla-cars-have-been-sold">Tesla vehicles</a>. Let us explain.
If you want to turn off regenerative braking on your Tesla, you probably won&#8217;t find any disabling option in the menu. Because turning off regenerative braking is not possible on a Tesla. It is also impossible to adjust the regen on Tesla vehicles built since Q2 2020. Tesla Model S/3/X/Y vehicles built before that date can still be able to offer adjustments. You just need to navigate through the main screen and go to Driving, then change the &#8216;Regenerative Braking&#8217; to &#8216;Low&#8217; for reducing the level of regenerative braking.
Newer Tesla vehicles come with standard level regen as default. There is no &#8216;Regenerative Braking&#8217; adjustment option anymore. So, why wouldn&#8217;t Tesla allow its drivers to adjust regenerative braking? The main reason is that the vehicle range is heavily affected by not being able to recuperate the energy you otherwise lost to heat, etc by pressing the brake pedal. Other automakers agree with Tesla as well. According to <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://electrek.co/2018/08/08/audi-e-tron-quattro-electric-suv-range-regen-braking/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Audi</a>, regenerative braking can extend the range by up to 30% on average. Leapmotor T03 is a small-size electric hatchback first hit the market in May 2020. It is the second EV that Dahua-backed EV start-up built and launched. Dongfeng Motor has partnered up with Huawei to globalize its SERES-branded electric vehicles. Israel is one of the first places they went to sell EVs. 9 Affordable Chinese EVs Available in Israel

After Nevada state officials&#8217; confirmation, Tesla finally announced their next big factory investment at Giga Nevada today. Elon Musk&#8217;s company will invest over $3.6 billion to build Tesla&#8217;s largest EV battery cell production plant in the world.

Giga Nevada, also known as Gigafactory 1, is somewhat of a joint venture between Japanese battery maker Panasonic and Tesla. The initial investment made in 2014. Since then, both parties spent a total of $6.2 billion to create one of the largest manufacturing sites in the United States. According to Tesla, as of today, the Giga Nevada team has successfully produced more than 7.3 billion battery cells, 1.5 million battery packs, 3.6 million drive units, and 1 million energy modules.

The next phase of this investment will cost over $3.6 billion and includes a 100 GWh 4680 cell factory, as well as the first high-volume Tesla Semi factory. Tesla has been manufacturing its in-house 4680 cells at Kato Road, California for quite sometime. This new project aims to build Tesla&#8217;s largest battery cell factory. Giga Nevada is capable of producing 35 GWh of battery cells annually, which is enough to manufacture around 500K electric vehicles per year. But that is way less, not even half of what Tesla needs to put into its EVs. Because of that, LG Chem and CATL, two major battery cell suppliers of Tesla, have been shipping billions of cells to Tesla factories every year.
Texas-based EV maker is finally taking this matter into its own hands. 4680 cell manufacturing process is still in the works before reaching perfection at Kato Road. The dry-coating technique that helps Tesla reduce manufacturing costs and the environmental impact of cell production is yet to be scaled up. But there is enough time to improve before starting mass production at the new factory near Giga Nevada.
The estimated capacity of this factory will be 100 GWh, a huge capacity to produce enough batteries for 2 million electric vehicles. Tesla Investing $3.6 Billion to Build 100 GWh 4680 Cell Factory and More

In the United States, electric car batteries are soon overtaking other commodities in importance. With the exception of one business founded by a former Tesla pioneer that is presently exploring cathode and anode processing, mineral processing operations are primarily carried out elsewhere.
J.B. Straubel, currently owns a firm called Redwood Materials that recycles used batteries to make lithium-ion batteries for automobiles. The business recently disclosed a deal with Panasonic to deliver battery hardware valued at billions of dollars, making it the first significant processed cathode contract to be awarded in the United States.
<h2>Redwood Materials Provides the Processed Mineral to Panasonic</h2>
Around one-third of an EV battery pack is made up of cathode material. Redwood Materials will provide the processed mineral to Panasonic manufacturing in Kansas City in 2025. Additionally, a significant partner of Redwood&#8217;s, the American manufacturer Tesla, will get the majority of the battery cells produced in the Kansas City factory.

Although Tesla and Panasonic jointly own the Giga Nevada battery facility, the Semi will really go into serial production in the Austin-based Gigafactory Texas. Tesla has become an automotive giant that builds electric vehicles all over the world. From the old GM-Toyota factory in Fremont, California to China&#8217;s largest EV production hub in Shanghai, Tesla cars are made in five locations (including Tesla Semi pilot line in Nevada) on three different continents.

Giga Shanghai is Tesla&#8217;s export hub and has the highest production output among other gigafactories. Therefore, Shanghai factory produces more than half of the Model Ys and Model 3s built in the world. That will change when the new Texas and Berlin factories ramp up their Model Y production. According to the latest info, Giga Berlin will reach a 5,000 Model Ys per week production rate in Q1 2023. Texas facility&#8217;s output will be lower than Berlin because of the slower than expected implementation of the <a href="https://www.licarco.com/news/what-is-structural-battery-ctc-ctb-ev-battery-packs-explained">structural battery pack</a> that uses Tesla&#8217;s proprietary cell design 4680.

According to rumors, the Shanghai factory would get a chance in 2023 to produce Chinese versions of the Model S and Model X to avoid hefty import taxes. Tesla China will also develop and produce a budget-friendly Tesla model at the expansion site right next to Giga Shanghai.
Cybertruck is the most desired future model that Tesla fans eagerly waiting for. It will be made in Giga Texas, where a special production line is designed specifically for the famous electric pickup truck. The unique design and the platform of the Cybertruck will allow Tesla to reduce production costs a lot. That will help Texas-based company lower its starting price to keep up with <a href="https://www.licarco.com/ford-f-150-lightning-pro-extended-range">Ford&#8217;s F-150 Lightning</a> and the Amazon-backed Rivian&#8217;s promising offering <a href="https://www.licarco.com/rivian-r1t">R1T</a>.
Tesla&#8217;s second-generation Roadster is also due production in Texas. Tesla is committed to making Austin, Texas its largest manufacturing hub. EV sales continue to grow and have reached a record high in Q2 with a 13% increase. Tesla as a customer of Panasonic is the leader in sales. To meet such high demand for batteries, Panasonic is trying to double down its production. The company published plans in April to invest 400 billion yen (approximately $2.9 billion) in “growth areas” including automotive batteries and supply chain software.
In December, Panasonic Energy of North America announced that a production facility is planned to be built in Reno, Nevada in addition to its existing production at Tesla’s Gigafactory 1 site in Sparks, Nevada.

The Japanese giant has another plan to increase its battery production: a new EV battery plant in Kansas. The governor&#8217;s office of Kansas stated in a press release that Panasonic has picked De Soto, Kansas for its new project that will bring up to $4 billion in investments and create up to 8,000 jobs.
In the press release, it is stated that the Attracting Powerful Economic Expansion Act (SB 347), or APEX Act is the motivation for the incentive decision. “When the Kansas Legislature passed the APEX legislation, this was the kind of megaproject we had in mind,” Representative Ron Ryckman of Kansas said.
After the deal between Panasonic and Kansas State is signed, the governor’s office has revealed the details of the $829.2-million incentive package that includes a $500 million investment tax credit that stretches over five years and a $234 million payroll rebate paid over 10 years, among other sweeteners.
The new factory in De Soto is planned to be larger than Panasonic and Tesla’s Gigafactory in Nevada. Panasonic announced in February that the mass production of lithium-ion batteries for Tesla is planned to begin by 2024.

The first Gigafactory of Tesla in Europe, the fourth one overall, is officially opened today by the company’s CEO Elon Musk. The initial announcement of building a factory in Europe was made two and a half years ago. The <a href="https://www.licarco.com/news/how-many-tesla-gigafactories/">Giga Berlin</a>-Brandenburg has started officially running today in the German capital.
During the opening ceremony, Tesla has delivered the first 30 Model Ys to the customers. These <a href="https://www.licarco.com/2021-tesla-model-y-performance/">Model Y</a> compact SUVs are the performance configuration of the vehicle and have a range of 320 miles.
The German government has given Tesla provisional approval to start commercial production at the factory in early March. This has allowed Tesla to produce up to 500.000 EVs per year at the Giga Berlin-Brandenburg. The original plan was to begin production in summer 2021; however, the coronavirus pandemic, supply chain disruptions, and environmental concerns have postponed the opening of the factory.
In February 2020, Tesla had to temporarily stop the construction of the factory due to environmental concerns of the local government. Defending the impact of the factory on the environment, Elon Musk argued that the water use of the factory will be relatively very little. He also stated that the forest cleared before the construction wasn’t natural because the trees had been planted for the company’s cardboard factory.

Although Tesla has aimed to produce up to 5,000 cars and 59 GWh of battery capacity annually at Giga Berlin, Musk has previously stated that increasing production will be a real challenge for the company. To achieve this objective, Tesla already hired over 3,000 workers and the number will go up to 12,000 eventually.
In the opening ceremony, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz made a speech that acknowledges the importance of Tesla&#8217;s investment in Germany.
&#8220;The opening of the Tesla factory with Elon Musk in Brandenburg is an important sign: Germany is a strong location for industrial investments. This is how we will succeed in becoming carbon neutral and leading the transformation. The future belongs to electromobility.&#8221;
The Giga Berlin-Brandenburg will be a crucial logistical hub for Tesla because the company currently imports vehicles to Europe from its other factories. The Berlin Gigafactory is the fourth factory after Nevada, New York, and Shanghai. The fifth one is currently underway in Texas, where Tesla will also have its headquarters.
