Canoo has been developing a multi-purpose EV platform. Its first vehicle is called Canoo Lifestyle Vehicle. US-based EV start-up is aiming to build electric vehicle both spacious and performance-oriented. Lifestyle Vehicle model can offer up to 350 HP/257 kW, and also carry more than 1,464 lbs (664 kg) of payload. Canoo&#8217;s first EV is coming to market later in the 2023. 
American EV-maker Canoo will also deliver 4,500 last mile delivery vans to retail giant Walmart, announced in July 2022. Walmart has an option to increase its EV order from 4,500 vans to 10,000, if the deliveries went through smoothly.

Regenerative braking technology is a bliss for the efficiency of <a href="https://www.licarco.com/cars">all-electric vehicles</a>. But it takes time to get used to this helpful feature. Sometimes it gets annoying or makes no sense on some occasions. There is an option to turn it off, but things get complicated with <a href="https://www.licarco.com/news/how-many-tesla-cars-have-been-sold">Tesla vehicles</a>. Let us explain.
If you want to turn off regenerative braking on your Tesla, you probably won&#8217;t find any disabling option in the menu. Because turning off regenerative braking is not possible on a Tesla. It is also impossible to adjust the regen on Tesla vehicles built since Q2 2020. Tesla Model S/3/X/Y vehicles built before that date can still be able to offer adjustments. You just need to navigate through the main screen and go to Driving, then change the &#8216;Regenerative Braking&#8217; to &#8216;Low&#8217; for reducing the level of regenerative braking.
Newer Tesla vehicles come with standard level regen as default. There is no &#8216;Regenerative Braking&#8217; adjustment option anymore. So, why wouldn&#8217;t Tesla allow its drivers to adjust regenerative braking? The main reason is that the vehicle range is heavily affected by not being able to recuperate the energy you otherwise lost to heat, etc by pressing the brake pedal. Other automakers agree with Tesla as well. If you drive a Tesla vehicle built before Q2 2022, your car&#8217;s main screen comes with an option to adjust regenerative braking. <a href="https://www.licarco.com/cars">Electric vehicles</a> are getting really popular, but the main concerns, such as short range and long charging times that hold conventional vehicle owners back from switching sides are still yet to be solved. That is where higher-voltage electric vehicles are coming into play. Tesla recently announced its 1000-volt system and hinted more Tesla vehicles will benefit from the new tech. Future EVs will eventually make the switch from 400V to higher voltage systems.
800V or higher voltage electric vehicles are capable of delivering <a href="https://www.licarco.com/news/top-15-ev-charging-networks-in-the-us">ultra-fast charging</a> rates and offer higher performance while improving the efficiency of the all systems. 800V electric vehicles can only be possible by employing an 800V battery and using SiC (Silicone Carbide) inverter, proper cabling, OBC (On-board Charger), DCDC converter and other electrical equipments that support higher voltage levels. Conventional electric vehicles come with 400V electrical architecture as standard. Because of the voltage limit, today&#8217;s electric vehicles are limited to a maximum of 400-volt when they are connected to a DC charging station. In order to reach higher charge rates, current levels should go up to 600A or even more, which is not ideal for the infrastructure that charging stations heavily rely on.
The first higher-voltage EV is the Porsche Taycan, which has a cutting-edge 800V inverter built-in. Its DC charging rate can go as high as 270 kW with the proper charging setup. After that Hyundai and Kia developed an alternative 800V charging tech to avoid using an expensive 800V SiC inverter. In late 2021, Lucid Motors launched its first vehicle Lucid Air with an industry-leading 924V system developed by <a href="https://eepower.com/news/wolfspeed-announces-the-lucid-air-is-using-its-sic-power-modules/#">Wolfspeed</a>. And one year later, Tesla unveiled its first 1000V vehicle architecture with the launch of the tri-motor electric truck Tesla Semi. <a href="https://spectrum.ieee.org/ev-charging-800-volt">General Motors</a>, Volkswagen, and, of course, Chinese brands such as Aion, Avatr, Xpeng, Zeekr, BYD, Voyah and Li Auto have also been developing 800V high-voltage electrical systems for their EVs.
In this article, we researched our way into higher voltage electric vehicles and created a list of benefits of owning an 800V EV.
<h2>Faster Charging Compared to 400V Electric Vehicles</h2>

800V or higher voltage systems allow electric vehicles to be charged at as high as 480 kW, <a href="https://www.licarco.com/xpeng-g9-awd">Xpeng G9</a> proved. Regular 400V electric vehicles aren&#8217;t capable of doing that, because of the charging infrastructure&#8217;s current limit. When you plug your 400V vehicle into a DC charger, you limit your session to 400-volt. To provide faster charging speeds, EV charger should deliver more current, sometimes as high as 600A or even more (The third-gen Tesla Superchargers can deliver up to 660-amper). In order to increase the current, thicker and water-cooled cables are needed. Even using these expensive cables are not enough to lower down the charge efficiency, as conduction losses will increase up to nine times.
EV manufacturers have been developing 800V charging technologies to overcome this fast-charging problem. Some companies such as Porsche/Audi, Lucid Motors, and Xpeng use SiC inverters inside their EVs. These next-gen SiC inverters can handle higher voltages and also improve efficiency. Hyundai and Kia took a different approach to this matter. Korean automakers developed a technology that manages to provide 800-volt charging by using electric motors as generator and a regular IGBT inverter.
Thanks to more advanced electronics, 800-volt charging enables vehicle owners to reach up to 480 kW DC charging rates. For instance, Xpeng G9 and Aion LX Plus are already on sale that support ultra-fast 480+ kW charging. Lucid Air can go as high as 300 kW. Porsche Taycan did perform similiarly. Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 is also capable of delivering up to 240 kW DC charging speeds. 800V charging is definitely the future of EVs!
<h3>More Efficient &amp; More Powerful Electric Drivetrains</h3>

By switching to a 800V architecture, EV manufacturers can make use of higher voltage motors as well. Porsche is the first company to implement an 800V electric motor into its vehicles. Higher voltage improves overall power density of the motor unit and it reduces the maximum torque required to achieve the same output power due to extended RPM range.
As the DC link voltage of the EV motor units increase, the current levels decrease. This leads to lower copper loss and improves efficiency of the electrical traction systems. Higher voltage motors are also tend to produce more power than lower voltage solutions.
From the efficiency perspective, the next-gen SiC inverters used inside 800V electric vehicles are also much more efficient. <a href="https://www.licarco.com/byd-yangwang-u8">BYD recently unveiled</a> its first SiC inverter developed in-house, which scores an efficiency level of 99.5 percent.
<h3>800V Architectures Mean Lighter Electric Cars</h3>

800-volt electrical architectures can be created by using thinner cables between the battery pack and the inverter, DC charging port, OBC, and other equipments. As a result, 800V electric vehicles will use less copper and that would reduce the overall weight of the car.
Higher voltage electric motors are also significantly lighter and more power-dense than regular lower voltage units. That means 800V electric vehicles can be equipped with smaller, lighter motors. That creates more room for batteries as well.
<h3>Reduced Cost of Cabling, Less Copper Used Inside the Vehicle</h3>
Electric vehicles use more copper than any other vehicles. It takes 2 to 4 times more copper to build an EV than an ICE vehicle. But unlike 400V EVs, higher voltage systems don&#8217;t require thick copper cables. That will not only help manufacturers reduce the cost of cabling but also ease up the global copper supply chain. Because EV batteries and heavy investments in EV charging infrastructure have already been causing problems for the copper industry, thinner cables will help in the near future.
Here are some disadvantages of choosing 800V electrical system over a regular 400V architecture:
&#8211; Higher cost of electrical insulation and clearance
&#8211; Higher voltage battery packs tend to perform less reliable than 400V systems, because they contain larger number of series connections. The impact of single cell failure in a pack like this would be much higher than the 400V batteries with more parallel cells.
&#8211; Lower voltage battery packs are more energy-dense than the similiarly designed 800V batteries, which is the result of all the additional electrical clearance requirements around high voltage systems and the much larger BMS.

EX30 Subcompact Electric SUV Confirmed by Volvo for 2023

Volvo has unveiled plans to sell an all-electric minivan in China, where it will be one of the company&#8217;s top-of-the-line cars, alongside the EX90 SUV. There is no information on when it will be released or whether it will be sold outside of China. But we have a pretty decent idea as to which newly launched car it will be matched to.
The news that there will be a Volvo version came during a media briefing held by Qin Peiji, President of Volvo Cars Greater China Sales Company. According to some reports, Volvo will reveal its electric people carrier in concept form in the third quarter of 2023 and the production version will be shown and launched before the end of the year.
The six-seat Zeekr 009 is a vehicle of the same design that rides on the same Geely Sustainable Experience Architecture platform that the Volvo will be manufactured on. It resembles the Swedish manufacturer&#8217;s reimagining of the Volvo electric MPV. It includes a large 140 kWh battery pack and a dual-motor all-wheel drive system with 536 horsepower, giving it a stated range of 511 miles/822 kilometers.
During a press conference given by Qin Peiji, President of Volvo Cars Greater China Sales Company, it was announced that there will also be a Volvo model. Volvo will unveil its electric people carrier in concept form in the third quarter of 2023, and the production version will be displayed and unveiled before the year is through.
<h2>Volvo Enlivens the External and Interior Designs with Its Minivan</h2>
Both Volvo and Zeekr vehicles will be sold in China, but neither brand&#8217;s parent corporation, Geely, will offset the other&#8217;s sales. Therefore, it is assumed that the Volvo model would be positioned more affluently than the 009, which presently has a starting price in China of just under $75,000.
Later on, a cheaper Zeekr 009 with rear-wheel drive will be made available, although Volvo could decide to keep their model all-wheel drive-only to charge higher prices for it.

In the US, the federal government provides various incentives for conversion to electric vehicles. The City of New York is also taking advantage of these incentives and incorporating a large-scale fleet. The New York City Council announced it will spend $10.1 million to purchase 925 electric vehicles. The fund will cover electric garbage trucks to street sweepers, and build 315 new EV chargers. The US Department of Transportation provides $10.1 million in federal grant funding to the City of New York. The fund will be used to purchase 382 <a href="https://www.licarco.com/2022-chevrolet-bolt-ev">Chevrolet Bolts</a>, 360 <a href="https://www.licarco.com/ford-e-transit">Ford E-Transit</a> vans, and 150 Ford <a href="https://www.licarco.com/ford-f-150-lightning-pro-standard-range">F-150 Lightning</a> pickup trucks.
The administration is also purchasing 25 plug-in hybrid street sweepers for the New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) and 7 Mack LR BEV garbage trucks with two 130 kW engines producing a total of 496 peak horsepower. After a successful pilot implementation, these will be the first electric garbage trucks owned by DSNY. This first order of electric pickup trucks and vans brings the agency closer to its goal of an all-electric light and medium-duty fleet by 2035.
Federal funds will also support the DCAS&#8217;s first major investment in all-electric pickup trucks. By September 2022 – three years ahead of schedule – DCAS has reached its goal of electrifying 4,000 vehicles in its city fleet. Currently, the electric fleet includes a variety of vehicle types and categories, from more than 200 Ford Mustang Mach Es to nearly 850 Chevy Bolts, most of which serve law enforcement.

<h2>New York City To Establish Its Own Charging Network</h2>
DCAS also operates the largest EV charging network in New York State. The total number of charging units consist of more than 1,300 for fleet vehicles. DCAS will build 600 more charging units in the next 18 months. This fund will also support the purchase of 315 additional charging units.

New York City Buys 925 EVs for Cleaning

The electric delivery van fleet of Amazon is growing day by day and its size is exceeded 1,000 electric vans. The retail giant has made more than 5 million deliveries in the US with Rivian-made zero-emission vans since earlier this year.
Amazon has overall 30,000 delivery vans and 20,000 trailers in its total fleet, but the number of electric delivery vans is increasing among them, and Rivian will deliver up to 100,000 vans to Amazon. Rivian-made EDVs are started operating in many cities across the US since July.

The EV company declared that over 7,300 <a href="https://www.licarco.com/rivian-r1t">R1T pickup trucks</a>, <a href="https://www.licarco.com/rivian-r1s">R1S SUVs</a> and EDVs are manufactured between July and September. In the same period, the company delivered 6,584 vehicles.

The goal of Amazon and Rivian to create an electrified delivery fleet has been obstructed by supply chain problems and inflation. When the deal between the two companies was first announced in 2019, 100,000 vans aimed to be on the roads by 2024.  However, now, Amazon changed its projection to 2030. The EV startup Rivian has also <a href="https://www.licarco.com/news/rivian-86-billion-valuation-biggest-ipo">struggled with</a> mass production last year, as delivery-ready vehicles may show severe production-related issues.
The vice president of Amazon Transportation, Udit Madan, said, “We’re always excited for the holiday season, but making deliveries to customers across the country with our new zero-emission vehicles for the first time makes this year unique”. He also stated that over 5 million packages have been delivered with Rivian’s EDVs so far and as the number of EDVs is going up to 100,000, the delivery numbers will grow exponentially.

<h2>Cheap And Less Carbon Footprint</h2>
According to Lunaz, it is modular but still brand agnostic. It will mix and match existing components to develop the best solution for each truck. It claims that its transformed trash trucks are &#8220;significantly cheaper&#8221; than buying a brand new electric truck. They save 80 percent of the embedded carbon (related to manufacturing) by choosing this type of truck over a new electric truck. Supposing they have roughly equivalent efficiency, this could result in a substantially lower environmental impact over the life of the vehicle.
For varying route lengths, the upcycled electric garbage trucks use modular battery packs ranging from 275 kWh to 400 kWh. Peak torque is 5,162 lb-ft/6,99 n-m, and perhaps in the tradition of Rolls-Royce, Lunaz does not release a horsepower figure, instead stating that it is &#8220;fast enough of it to block traffic forming behind it.
Indoor specifications, the highly developed trash truck will have a 12 inch/30 cm tool screen as well as two 10 inch/25 cm display screens. The Mini Recharged program, in which Mini itself oversees the conversion of classic Mini Coopers to electric drive, comes the closest. So far, that program is only available in the United Kingdom.
Lunaz claims its trucks are under warranty as new. The level of detail here may well be the difference as it scales up for its home market of the United Kingdom and possibly beyond.

&#8220;EVage has just raised $28 million in a seed round (one of the largest in India), driven by new US-based VC RedBlue Capital. It will use the funds to complete its production-ready factory outside of Delhi in the last two quarters of 2022. EVage aims to scale up production to meet growing demand. By the end of the year, there are plans to fulfill orders for customers in the FMCG/Logistics/E-commerce sectors.

Ford Pro Unveils Exciting E-Transit Custom Electric Van

The US Postal Service (USPS) has initially ordered 50,000 units of the Next Generation Delivery Vehicles (NGDV) from the Oshkosh Defense Company as a part of a $2.98-billion deal.
USPS <a href="https://www.licarco.com/news/usps-electrify-its-fleet-5000-ev">previously announced</a> that 10% of the first NGDVs will be electric but the latest statement from the company is that the share of the battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in the initial order will be doubled.
The Us Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as a federal agency, has criticized the USPS and its 10-year contract with Oshkosh Defense and accused them of not being bold enough in terms of electrification.
Even though the agency has doubled the number of BEVs in its future NGDV fleet, they admitted that more BEVs would deliver greater emission benefits. The USPS stated that the contract with Oshkosh is flexible and will allow increasing the number of BEVs as financial resources become available.
The Postmaster General and USPS CEO Louis DeJoy elaborate on the agency’s strategy for the electrification:
&#8220;Since I came on board a year and a half ago, we have continuously evaluated and adjusted our vehicle purchase strategy based on our future network initiatives, ongoing review of BEV application to our operational strategy, and our financial outlook as we undertake our ongoing implementation of the Delivering for America plan. Based upon this work and our improving outlook, we have determined that increasing our initial electric vehicle purchase from 5,000 to 10,019 makes good sense from an operational and financial perspective.&#8221;
<h2>The Agency Committed to the Electrification</h2>

DeJoy also stated that the order and the contract with Oshkosh Defense demonstrate the agency’s commitment to inclusion of the electric vehicles into its fleet. Despite the electrification seems costly for now, the agency claims that it will continue its plan to electrify while being prudent fiscally.
USPS currently has 190.000 Long-Life Delivery Vehicles (LLV) on the road. Most of them are over 30 years old and don’t have safety features that are essential in most vehicles today. The NGDVs, unlike LLVs, will have feature air conditioning, improved ergonomics, increased cargo capacity, and more advanced vehicle and safety technology. Safety tech includes 360-degree cameras, advanced braking and traction control, airbags, a front-and rear-collision avoidance system that includes visual, audio warning, and automatic braking.
The NGDV’s design was displayed during CES 2022 and there will be four versions of new vans: two internal combustion engine types and two battery electric vehicle options, one of which will be two-wheel drive and one with four-wheel drive capability. The BEV version will have a range of 70 miles. The plan is to begin to send the new vans to U.S. destinations at the end of 2023.

USPS doubled the EVs in its Future Fleet

The United States Postal Service (USPS) has announced its electrification plans on Sunday, February 6. The USPS will order 5,000 electric delivery vans as a starting point to electrify 70% of its fleet by 2030.
Postmaster General and USPS Chief Executive Officer Louis DeJoy declared that the Postal Service is willing to increase its electric vehicle orders, but further funding is necessary for the electrification effort of the service. The CEO intended to emphasize the financial hardship of the USPS to run an environment-friendly fleet.
DeJoy elaborated on the USPS’s current position in the delivery sector: “Moreover, comparisons of the Postal Service to private sector multi-national corporations that report yearly profits in the billions of dollars, and that are not required to go to 161 million delivery addresses in all climates and topographies six days per week, are not relevant in view of our perilous financial condition and universal service mission.”

The Postal Service has announced on February 23, 2021, that a new generation of U.S.-built postal delivery vehicles will be manufactured as per the 10-year contract with Oshkosh Defence. Almost a year ago, USPS declared that the new vans from Oshkosh would initiate the most important modernization of its fleets in thirty years.
Under this contract, Oshkosh would conclude the production design of the USPS’s Next Generation Delivery Vehicle (NGDV) with an initial investment of $482 million. The company would also assemble up to 165,000 NGDVs for the Postal Service.

Members of the Biden administration sent letters to the USPS, advising it to reconsider its plan to buy gas-powered NGDVs. The Postal Service plans to buy a great number of ICE delivery vans and this plan will affect the government’s plan to make federal cars and trucks environmental-friendly because the fleet of the USPS constitutes a third of the government’s fleet.
The Postmaster General implied that if additional funding will not become available, the USPS will not be able to increase the electric vehicles in the fleet of USPS. &#8220;Absent such funding, we must make fiscally responsible decisions that result in the needed introduction of safer and environmentally cleaner vehicles for the men and women who deliver America’s mail.”
The Postal Service has worked closely with federal agencies to achieve its plan’s compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) which encourages federal agencies to consider the environmental impacts of their new plans. In the latest release, the USPS claims that its electrification plan fully met the requirements of the statute.
