Regenerative braking technology is a bliss for the efficiency of <a href="https://www.licarco.com/cars">all-electric vehicles</a>. But it takes time to get used to this helpful feature. Sometimes it gets annoying or makes no sense on some occasions. There is an option to turn it off, but things get complicated with <a href="https://www.licarco.com/news/how-many-tesla-cars-have-been-sold">Tesla vehicles</a>. Let us explain.
If you want to turn off regenerative braking on your Tesla, you probably won&#8217;t find any disabling option in the menu. Because turning off regenerative braking is not possible on a Tesla. It is also impossible to adjust the regen on Tesla vehicles built since Q2 2020. Tesla Model S/3/X/Y vehicles built before that date can still be able to offer adjustments. You just need to navigate through the main screen and go to Driving, then change the &#8216;Regenerative Braking&#8217; to &#8216;Low&#8217; for reducing the level of regenerative braking.
Newer Tesla vehicles come with standard level regen as default. There is no &#8216;Regenerative Braking&#8217; adjustment option anymore. So, why wouldn&#8217;t Tesla allow its drivers to adjust regenerative braking? Other automakers agree with Tesla as well. If you drive a Tesla vehicle built before Q2 2022, your car&#8217;s main screen comes with an option to adjust regenerative braking. How to Turn Off Regenerative Braking on a Tesla?

That is where higher-voltage electric vehicles are coming into play. Tesla recently announced its 1000-volt system and hinted more Tesla vehicles will benefit from the new tech. Future EVs will eventually make the switch from 400V to higher voltage systems.
800V or higher voltage electric vehicles are capable of delivering <a href="https://www.licarco.com/news/top-15-ev-charging-networks-in-the-us">ultra-fast charging</a> rates and offer higher performance while improving the efficiency of the all systems. 800V electric vehicles can only be possible by employing an 800V battery and using SiC (Silicone Carbide) inverter, proper cabling, OBC (On-board Charger), DCDC converter and other electrical equipments that support higher voltage levels. Conventional electric vehicles come with 400V electrical architecture as standard. Because of the voltage limit, today&#8217;s electric vehicles are limited to a maximum of 400-volt when they are connected to a DC charging station. In order to reach higher charge rates, current levels should go up to 600A or even more, which is not ideal for the infrastructure that charging stations heavily rely on.
The first higher-voltage EV is the Porsche Taycan, which has a cutting-edge 800V inverter built-in. Its DC charging rate can go as high as 270 kW with the proper charging setup. After that Hyundai and Kia developed an alternative 800V charging tech to avoid using an expensive 800V SiC inverter. In late 2021, Lucid Motors launched its first vehicle Lucid Air with an industry-leading 924V system developed by <a href="https://eepower.com/news/wolfspeed-announces-the-lucid-air-is-using-its-sic-power-modules/#">Wolfspeed</a>. And one year later, Tesla unveiled its first 1000V vehicle architecture with the launch of the tri-motor electric truck Tesla Semi. <a href="https://spectrum.ieee.org/ev-charging-800-volt">General Motors</a>, Volkswagen, and, of course, Chinese brands such as Aion, Avatr, Xpeng, Zeekr, BYD, Voyah and Li Auto have also been developing 800V high-voltage electrical systems for their EVs.
In this article, we researched our way into higher voltage electric vehicles and created a list of benefits of owning an 800V EV.
<h2>Faster Charging Compared to 400V Electric Vehicles</h2>

800V or higher voltage systems allow electric vehicles to be charged at as high as 480 kW, <a href="https://www.licarco.com/xpeng-g9-awd">Xpeng G9</a> proved. Regular 400V electric vehicles aren&#8217;t capable of doing that, because of the charging infrastructure&#8217;s current limit. When you plug your 400V vehicle into a DC charger, you limit your session to 400-volt. To provide faster charging speeds, EV charger should deliver more current, sometimes as high as 600A or even more (The third-gen Tesla Superchargers can deliver up to 660-amper). In order to increase the current, thicker and water-cooled cables are needed. Even using these expensive cables are not enough to lower down the charge efficiency, as conduction losses will increase up to nine times.
EV manufacturers have been developing 800V charging technologies to overcome this fast-charging problem. Some companies such as Porsche/Audi, Lucid Motors, and Xpeng use SiC inverters inside their EVs. These next-gen SiC inverters can handle higher voltages and also improve efficiency. Hyundai and Kia took a different approach to this matter. Korean automakers developed a technology that manages to provide 800-volt charging by using electric motors as generator and a regular IGBT inverter.
Thanks to more advanced electronics, 800-volt charging enables vehicle owners to reach up to 480 kW DC charging rates. For instance, Xpeng G9 and Aion LX Plus are already on sale that support ultra-fast 480+ kW charging. Lucid Air can go as high as 300 kW. Porsche Taycan did perform similiarly. Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 is also capable of delivering up to 240 kW DC charging speeds. 800V charging is definitely the future of EVs!
<h3>More Efficient &amp; More Powerful Electric Drivetrains</h3>

By switching to a 800V architecture, EV manufacturers can make use of higher voltage motors as well. Porsche is the first company to implement an 800V electric motor into its vehicles. Higher voltage improves overall power density of the motor unit and it reduces the maximum torque required to achieve the same output power due to extended RPM range.
As the DC link voltage of the EV motor units increase, the current levels decrease. This leads to lower copper loss and improves efficiency of the electrical traction systems. Higher voltage motors are also tend to produce more power than lower voltage solutions.
From the efficiency perspective, the next-gen SiC inverters used inside 800V electric vehicles are also much more efficient. <a href="https://www.licarco.com/byd-yangwang-u8">BYD recently unveiled</a> its first SiC inverter developed in-house, which scores an efficiency level of 99.5 percent.
<h3>800V Architectures Mean Lighter Electric Cars</h3>

800-volt electrical architectures can be created by using thinner cables between the battery pack and the inverter, DC charging port, OBC, and other equipments. As a result, 800V electric vehicles will use less copper and that would reduce the overall weight of the car.
Higher voltage electric motors are also significantly lighter and more power-dense than regular lower voltage units. That means 800V electric vehicles can be equipped with smaller, lighter motors. That creates more room for batteries as well.
<h3>Reduced Cost of Cabling, Less Copper Used Inside the Vehicle</h3>
Electric vehicles use more copper than any other vehicles. It takes 2 to 4 times more copper to build an EV than an ICE vehicle. But unlike 400V EVs, higher voltage systems don&#8217;t require thick copper cables. That will not only help manufacturers reduce the cost of cabling but also ease up the global copper supply chain. Because EV batteries and heavy investments in EV charging infrastructure have already been causing problems for the copper industry, thinner cables will help in the near future.
Here are some disadvantages of choosing 800V electrical system over a regular 400V architecture:
&#8211; Higher cost of electrical insulation and clearance
&#8211; Higher voltage battery packs tend to perform less reliable than 400V systems, because they contain larger number of series connections. The impact of single cell failure in a pack like this would be much higher than the 400V batteries with more parallel cells.
&#8211; Lower voltage battery packs are more energy-dense than the similiarly designed 800V batteries, which is the result of all the additional electrical clearance requirements around high voltage systems and the much larger BMS.

EX30 Subcompact Electric SUV Confirmed by Volvo for 2023

While Jeep&#8217;s following all-electric SUVs, the Recon and Wagoneer S, will be mainly sold in the United States, all of these EVs will be targeted primarily at the European market.
As part of its &#8220;Dare Forward 2030&#8221; strategy, Stellantis plans to make all of its brands&#8217; vehicles electric starting in 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2038.

At a posh event at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Stellantis welcomed several dealers and displayed its whole portfolio of contemporary ideas. They created a seven-year product strategy to prepare for a completely different future. The replacement of the Dodge Durango with a three-row Dodge Stealth SUV was one of the disclosures from the event that an attendee documented. This is a sneak peek at some significant new product photographs captured at the conference. The Dodge Charger Daytona SRT and Ram 1500 Revolution BEV ideas are among them, as expected. Jeep already offers an electric car, at least in Europe, and it&#8217;s called the tiny <a href="https://www.licarco.com/jeep-avenger">Jeep Avenger</a>. Nevertheless, the front-wheel-drive Jeep Avenger, which isn&#8217;t sold in North America, isn&#8217;t the type of Jeep that could successfully traverse the Rubicon Trail. The new Recon checks all of those things while also having a boxy, rugged exterior.
The Wrangler is not planned to be replaced by the Recon. Nevertheless, it will be offered solely as an EV and positioned next to it in the lineup. It will be equipped with real off-road goods including e-locker axle technology, Jeep Selec-Terrain traction management, thick trail rubber, tow hooks, and underbody protection. It is based on the new Stellantis STLA Large EV platform.
In addition, the Uconnect media system will include navigation preloaded for some of the most well-traveled overland routes in the nation. The doors and roof may also be removed. Moreover, Jeep claims that the battery will have enough juice to get you across the Rubicon and back to a charging station, in case you&#8217;re wondering how you&#8217;d go about charging a Recon in the middle of nowhere. Recon EV reservations begin this year, and manufacturing begins the next year.

The Wagoneer S, another all-electric Jeep with a different target market in mind, has cars like the BMW iX in its sights. It shares the STLA Large base with the Recon and is similarly constructed, but its driving characteristics and aesthetics are tailored for city driving.
Although Jeep hasn&#8217;t provided exact information regarding the battery or charging periods, it did mention a driving range of 644 km/400 miles when it initially introduced the idea last September. That platform can support batteries up to 100 kWh. The idea also stated that it could reach 97 kmh /60 mph in under 3.5 seconds thanks to two electric motors that combined to provide 600 horsepower (608 PS) for its four wheels.
<h2>Dodge, Ram, And Chrysler Concepts</h2>

The RAM 1500 Revolution electric pickup (although not the production version introduced last month) and the Dodge Charger Daytona SRT were other highlights during the dealer event, as was already known. Yet the nearly extinct Chrysler brand also made an appearance to remind us that it would solely sell electric vehicles starting in 2028.
In 2022, the company unveiled the idea for the 400 horsepower (406 PS), dual-motor Airflow crossover as a competitor to the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Tesla Model Y. Nevertheless, it was already too late and when Chrysler informed us that the actual thing wouldn&#8217;t be available until 2024 or 2025. Yet, despite its attractive appearance, the 563-644 km/350–400 mile range sounds reasonable until you realize that the battery pack is a massive 118 kWh.

Attendees at the Stellantis event in Paris were shocked to see the electric Jeep Avenger crossover for the first time. The compact sporty SUV features a classic &#8220;Jeep&#8221; design.
The production version of Jeep&#8217;s smallest vehicle, the Avenger EV, was unveiled. It will initially only be offered with FWD and sits below the Renegade in the range. With the dual-motor Avenger 4&#215;4 Concept, Jeep is teasing what an AWD version would seem, even though one is already in development.

<h2>The Battery System Sits Within a 400-Volt Electric Powertrain System</h2>
The revolutionary STLA 400-volt electrical system, which powers an all-wheel-drive engine with two motors, lies at the heart of the Avenger. Its specifications have not yet been disclosed, although it will undoubtedly be more powerful than the front-wheel-drive Avenger. For some reason, details about the 4X4 idea displayed above are being kept under wraps, but the front-drive Avenger EV, powered by a single engine, provides drivers 154 HP.
With estimates of a 250 mile/400 km range on the European cycle, the 4×2 (2 Wheel Drive) Avenger&#8217;s li-ion battery pack is supposed to charge the battery from 20 to 80 percent in under 24 minutes.

According to Christian Meunier, CEO of Jeep,
The Avenger was created from the ground up to be a Jeep vehicle, and the all-electric 4&#215;2 model already features some of the industry-leading features that distinguish the Jeep&#8217;s identity. But we couldn&#8217;t help but wonder: What if we kept the Jeep brand&#8217;s distinctive design language, capability, and personality while injecting its four-wheel drive electric capabilities into a small package?
The release date and specifications for the all-wheel drive Avenger were not provided by Jeep. The Avenger 4&#215;4 has a somewhat superior approach and departure angles than the normal front-wheel drive model, according to the company, suggesting that these advantages will continue after the dual-motor vehicle goes into production.
But wait before you fall in love with it since it won&#8217;t be available in the US.

Since the highways in Europe are a little bit tighter than those in the US, the new Jeep Avenger was built expressly to provide customers the Jeep experience. WLTP estimates a 250 miles/400 kilometers range for the Avenger. Despite being smaller, it will nonetheless maintain the typical Jeep toughness. Next year, construction on it will begin in Tychy, Poland.

The Jeep Recon will be the preferred option for real off-road lovers looking for emission free EV, especially for drivers in North America. The Recon will indeed be fully competent of tackling challenging off-road routes, the manufacturer claims. It was created from the ground up as an electric vehicle and is not on the basis of any Jeep models that use engines with internal combustion.
Recon will have enough energy to head back to the closest spot for a recharging after tackling the infamous Rubicon Trail. In the first quarter of 2023 will see the start of reservations for North American clients. The Recon would be available in a variety of international markets.

The Wagoneer S, the last new electric car Stellantis has introduced, is scheduled to go on sale in 2023. Although it will be offered in other markets as well, it is also largely aimed at North American consumers.
It will come with an AWD system with two motors that can produce up to 600 hp. It should have a 400 miles/643 kilometers range and a 0-60 mph/0-96 kmh speed of 3.5 seconds.

<h2>The Scout is coming back for the US Market</h2>
VW is one of the world&#8217;s largest car manufacturers, but its share in the US market is relatively small. The plan of bringing the Scout back as an electric off-road brand is to win over the US auto market, where trucks and SUVs are highly demanded. This is the first time that Volkswagen has created a distinct brand focused on the US.
The teaser images of the Scout&#8216;s forthcoming pick-up truck and SUV are recently released. They both feature clean, boxy proportions, chunky off-road tires, and a raised ground clearance. Both vehicles don’t have a traditional powertrain and it enabled very short overhangs, except for the pick-up which has an extended load bay.
For the Scout, Volkswagen will not use the MEB electric architecture which establishes the company’s electric ID range. Alternatively, they will use a new technical platform concept for the offroad EVs of its new brand.
The new lineup of the Scout will be designed entirely for US customers and the price tag will possibly be around $40,000 which is lower than its rivals like Ford F150 Lightning and Chevrolet Silverado. The German manufacturer claims that the prototypes will be released next year, and the first Scouts will be ready in 2026.

The Scout was first introduced in 1961 by International Harvester as a small, two-door SUV which was produced to be a rival to Jeep. The Scout and second-generation Scout II were produced in Fort Wayne, Indiana, as two-door trucks with a removable hardtop. Production stopped in 1980, and VW acquired the rights to the brand when it bought Navistar International in 2020. (Navistar was created in 1985 when International Harvester went out of business.
Volkswagen is set to invest $1 billion into the new Scout brand. The investments will probably include building a new manufacturing plant and hiring a whole new pile of US-based executives. The company may also seek outside financing for the project, with the possibility of listing the subsidiary on the public markets once it’s up and running.
Nevertheless, the German manufacturer will have to deal with the global supply chain problem, battery material shortages, and high inflation in the coming years. Herbert Diess, the CEO, recently stated that the company has already been sold out on all EVs both in Europe and the US for the year. It means that people hoping to buy an EV from the VW group may have to wait till 2023 because the company is still trying to solve the chip shortage and production issues due to COVID restrictions in China.
