Chinese electric vehicle brands are a top priority at Licarco because the EV market has become increasingly dominated by pure electric Chinese cars. Last year, China sold more EVs than the rest of the world. BYD, NIO, ORA, and Geely are some of the biggest Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers.
Even though China has been producing millions of EVs for years, American drivers wouldn&#8217;t be able to buy one. It&#8217;s because vehicles made in China are subjected to a %27.5 import tariff in the US. Due to heavy taxation, Chinese brands had not prioritized the US auto market in their global plans. But that&#8217;s changing quickly, as more and more Chinese EV marques are expanding their reach towards western markets, including United States.
In this article, we gathered a list of Chinese EV brands and their expansion plans. We will update this post when an announcement is made regarding any Chinese EV maker&#8217;s global expansion.

Leapmotor, an emerging EV brand backed by Dahua Technology, has plans to enter the European market in 2023. The brand officials confirmed that Leapmotor would open showrooms in Europe. To finance its globalization plans, Hangzhou-based carmaker filed its first IPO that worths around $1.5bn at Hong Kong Exchange.
The brand has already started to sell electric vehicles in Turkey and Israel, starting with the compact hatchback called <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/leapmotor-t03" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Leapmotor T03</a>. The first EV to be showcased in Europe will probably be the electric sedan C01. With its sleek design, cell-to-chassis technology, and impressive performance figures, <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/leapmotor-c01" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Leapmotor C01</a> will attract a lot of customers.

BYD first entered Norway with the full-size electric SUV called <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/2022-byd-tang-ev" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tang EV</a>. Over the next months, China&#8217;s biggest EV manufacturer will start selling vehicles all over the world. BYD EVs are already available in Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. European countries where BYD will start operations before the end of 2022 are the United Kingdom, Germany, Denmark, Netherlands, and Sweden.
BYD will export these three electric vehicle models to Old Continent; compact electric SUV <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/byd-atto-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BYD Atto 3</a>, electric sedan <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/2022-byd-han-ev" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BYD Han EV</a>, and BYD Tang EV. India, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam will also be subject to BYD&#8217;s global expansion, as official statements confirmed.
Unfortunately, BYD has no plans to enter the American market yet. But there is a possibility of Chinese EV maker using its new premium brand, which reportedly will deliver a $145K+ luxury EV to the market, to attract customers from United States.

NIO is one of the first Chinese automakers, which officially confirms its entry into the US market. NIO-branded EVs will be on sale in the US starting in 2025. Large-size SUV ES8 is currently being tested on US roads. There is no official timeline for the US launch, though.
Chinese EV marque will also start selling EVs in Germany, Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway. The next move on the global plans is to enter more European markets such as Austria, Belgium, France, Hungary, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Portugal, and the Czech Republic. NIO is hoping to sell electric vehicles in 25 countries by 2025.

In February 2022, Xpeng opened its first showroom in Stockholm, Sweden. Guangzhou-based company will start selling EVs in Denmark, Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden before the year ends. The company&#8217;s first offering will be the mid-range electric sedan <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/xpeng-p5-600p" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Xpeng P5</a>.
Xpeng expects half of its electric vehicle sales in 2025 to come from outside of China. Europe is its first choice but customers from the US will eventually get a taste of Xpeng&#8217;s popular cars in the near future. Chinese brand signed a dealership agreement with a Turkish company to sell EVs in Turkey as well. The first vehicle to be put on sale in Turkey will be <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/xpeng-p7-4wd-high-performance" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Xpeng P7</a>.

Geely is a global automotive group. There are brands under the Geely Group that sell vehicles all over the world. Zeekr will be joining those brands next year by entering the European market. EV-only brand will make it official in early 2023, as Zeekr announced.
Zeekr has only one model on sale called Zeekr 001, but it has plans to launch a total of seven EVs by 2025. Its 2025 sales goal in Europe is 100,000 vehicles. There is no word whether Zeekr will sell EVs in Scandinavia, western/or eastern Europe. Follow us for more details.

Great Wall Motors (GWM) has officially entered the United Kingdom and Germany with its EV-only brand ORA. GWM introduced the first vehicles to be put on sale in Europe earlier this year. <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/ora-cat-64-kwh" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ORA Cat/Funky Cat</a> is the first one for the western market.
The company appoints Emil Frey to distribute vehicles starting in Germany. That is not the first time GWM to choose Germany for its global expansion. Chinese automaker&#8217;s battery division SVOLT opened a battery plant in Germany as well. Recently SVOLT announced its second investment worth €2.0bn, which would enable them to produce lithium-ion battery cells directly in the country.

If you want to play games with an Xbox controller on your Tesla, use a data cable (not a charge-only USB cable that lacks the data transfer function) to plug your controller into your Tesla Model 3/Y&#8217;s main screen via the USB-C ports in the center console or the USB-A port in the glove box. Step 1. Buy a wireless adapter/dongle for pairing your Xbox controller. <a href="https://amzn.to/3HCaTTv">8Bitdo Wireless USB Adapter 2</a> and <a href="https://amzn.to/3jyyigK">MAYFLASH Magic NS 2</a> are two of the most popular choices.
Step 2. Plug the wireless adapter into your Tesla via USB data ports. Use a USB-A to USB-C adapter if necessary. Please be aware that newer Model 3/Y vehicles don&#8217;t have USB data ports in the center console. You will need to use the USB-A port inside the glove compartment.
Step 3. Put your wireless adapter into pairing mode. 8Bitdo&#8217;s pairing button is on the bottom, whereas the Magic NS&#8217;s pairing mode can be activated by pressing the black button on the side until the light goes green and blinks fast.

Step 4. In order to put your controller into pairing mode, first press the Xbox button for one second until it lights up. Then, press and hold the circular pair button located on the back of the controller for three seconds.
Step 5. Once the wireless adapter and Xbox controller ared paired up, the lights on both of these devices will stop blinking. You will see a notification message on your Tesla&#8217;s screen that confirms the pairing.

Regenerative braking technology is a bliss for the efficiency of <a href="https://www.licarco.com/cars">all-electric vehicles</a>. But it takes time to get used to this helpful feature. Sometimes it gets annoying or makes no sense on some occasions. There is an option to turn it off, but things get complicated with <a href="https://www.licarco.com/news/how-many-tesla-cars-have-been-sold">Tesla vehicles</a>. Let us explain.
If you want to turn off regenerative braking on your Tesla, you probably won&#8217;t find any disabling option in the menu. Because turning off regenerative braking is not possible on a Tesla. It is also impossible to adjust the regen on Tesla vehicles built since Q2 2020. Tesla Model S/3/X/Y vehicles built before that date can still be able to offer adjustments. You just need to navigate through the main screen and go to Driving, then change the &#8216;Regenerative Braking&#8217; to &#8216;Low&#8217; for reducing the level of regenerative braking.
Newer Tesla vehicles come with standard level regen as default. There is no &#8216;Regenerative Braking&#8217; adjustment option anymore. So, why wouldn&#8217;t Tesla allow its drivers to adjust regenerative braking? The main reason is that the vehicle range is heavily affected by not being able to recuperate the energy you otherwise lost to heat, etc by pressing the brake pedal. Other automakers agree with Tesla as well. According to <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://electrek.co/2018/08/08/audi-e-tron-quattro-electric-suv-range-regen-braking/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Audi</a>, regenerative braking can extend the range by up to 30% on average. Leapmotor T03 is a small-size electric hatchback first hit the market in May 2020. It is the second EV that Dahua-backed EV start-up built and launched. Chinese company recently announced that Leapmotor T03 has passed the European Union&#8217;s Whole Vehicle Type Approval and it is ready to be sold in EU. Leapmotor also officially confirmed its entry into the Israeli market with the very same model. First batch of T03 are on their way to Israel. Dongfeng Motor has partnered up with Huawei to globalize its SERES-branded electric vehicles. Israel is one of the first places they went to sell EVs. EPA Has Released $5 Billion Electrified School Bus Initiative

The US Postal Service (USPS) has initially ordered 50,000 units of the Next Generation Delivery Vehicles (NGDV) from the Oshkosh Defense Company as a part of a $2.98-billion deal.
USPS <a href="https://www.licarco.com/news/usps-electrify-its-fleet-5000-ev">previously announced</a> that 10% of the first NGDVs will be electric but the latest statement from the company is that the share of the battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in the initial order will be doubled.
The Us Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as a federal agency, has criticized the USPS and its 10-year contract with Oshkosh Defense and accused them of not being bold enough in terms of electrification.
Even though the agency has doubled the number of BEVs in its future NGDV fleet, they admitted that more BEVs would deliver greater emission benefits. The USPS stated that the contract with Oshkosh is flexible and will allow increasing the number of BEVs as financial resources become available.
The Postmaster General and USPS CEO Louis DeJoy elaborate on the agency’s strategy for the electrification:
&#8220;Since I came on board a year and a half ago, we have continuously evaluated and adjusted our vehicle purchase strategy based on our future network initiatives, ongoing review of BEV application to our operational strategy, and our financial outlook as we undertake our ongoing implementation of the Delivering for America plan. Based upon this work and our improving outlook, we have determined that increasing our initial electric vehicle purchase from 5,000 to 10,019 makes good sense from an operational and financial perspective.&#8221;
<h2>The Agency Committed to the Electrification</h2>

DeJoy also stated that the order and the contract with Oshkosh Defense demonstrate the agency’s commitment to inclusion of the electric vehicles into its fleet. Despite the electrification seems costly for now, the agency claims that it will continue its plan to electrify while being prudent fiscally.
USPS currently has 190.000 Long-Life Delivery Vehicles (LLV) on the road. Most of them are over 30 years old and don’t have safety features that are essential in most vehicles today. The NGDVs, unlike LLVs, will have feature air conditioning, improved ergonomics, increased cargo capacity, and more advanced vehicle and safety technology. Safety tech includes 360-degree cameras, advanced braking and traction control, airbags, a front-and rear-collision avoidance system that includes visual, audio warning, and automatic braking.
The NGDV’s design was displayed during CES 2022 and there will be four versions of new vans: two internal combustion engine types and two battery electric vehicle options, one of which will be two-wheel drive and one with four-wheel drive capability. The BEV version will have a range of 70 miles. The plan is to begin to send the new vans to U.S. destinations at the end of 2023.

USPS doubled the EVs in its Future Fleet

Electric vehicles are the future of the automotive world, and one of the most frequently asked questions in this new era is &#8220;What is the range of a certain EV?&#8221;. Customers looking for an EV to buy usually ask about the vehicle&#8217;s range figures first. But answering this question is not so simple because there are different test cycle standards used for calculating an electric vehicle&#8217;s range.
There are four common range tests that have been in use all over the world. These are EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) ratings, WLTP (Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure), NEDC (New European Driving Cycle), and CLTC (China Light Duty Vehicle Test Cycle). Some range tests are more generous than the others, NEDC and CLTC are usually the most generous of them all. EPA ratings are generally the most accurate range information you can find on the internet, because of the EPA&#8217;s realistic test cycles that better simulate real-world usage of an EV. WLTP is used by European automakers and is 80-90% accurate when compared with real road tests. To sum up, EPA and WLTP range tests are very close to real-world range figures you can get from your electric vehicles, whereas NEDC and the new Chinese test cycle called CLTC are typically overstated the amount of range drivers can see in real-world use, resulting from the misinformation of the EV customers.

<h2>What is the EPA Range Test?</h2>

The EPA range test for electric vehicles is called Multi-Cycle City/Highway Test Procedure. The agency tests EVs on dynamometers and puts them through different test cycles. The testing procedure starts with charging the car and leaving it parked overnight. The next morning, EPA puts the vehicle on a dyno and starts the range estimation process.
The electric vehicle is put through multiple urban and highway driving cycles until the battery is out of charge and the car is no longer be able to run. After completing the test cycle, the EPA then multiplies the preliminary range numbers by 0.7 to provide a final rating for the EV they tested. That is how EPA rates EVs for fuel economy and mileage/or MPGe.
<h2>What is WLTP?</h2>

After Volkswagen&#8217;s Dieselgate scandal in 2015, European Union decided to introduce a new test procedure for vehicles, namely the WLTP (Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure). The predecessor of the WLTP, which is called NEDC (New European Driving Cycle), was developed in the &#8217;70s and is already outdated by other standards. The NEDC&#8217;s consumption and range measurements are not very close to real-traffic test results, as well.
WLTP, however, corresponds better to real traffic, it records about 20% higher consumption and EV range figures than the NEDC. The reason for this big gap between WLTP and NEDC is that the WLTP test conditions are way more realistic. WLTP uses longer driving cycles, takes into account real-world factors (air conditioning, electronics inside the car, etc.), and measures consumption figures from a broader speed range (29-82 mph).
There are also some problems with the WLTP test cycle, such as tightly controlled testing temperature. Electric vehicles tend to lose some of their range in cold weather conditions, resulting in range figures significantly lower than WLTP estimates. This can be fixed by including a cold-weather driving cycle in WLTP testing procedures. 
<h2>What is CLTC?</h2>
In the EV world, Chinese automakers are the only ones that use NEDC to test their electric vehicles&#8217; range, Americans use EPA ratings, European and Japanese manufacturers all depend on WLTP standard. But China has been gradually implementing a new fuel economy/EV range test procedure in its domestic market, namely the CLTC (China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle). This new standard promised to be more accurate than the old NEDC.
The new CLTC standard includes three test phases (slow, medium, fast driving). The testing process lasts 30 minutes, and the car travels about 14.5 kilometers in total. CLTC can be considered the WLTP equivalent of the Chinese automakers. There are some significant differences between WLTP and CLTC, as well. One of which is the idling duration of the car while testing the consumption; it is two times longer in the CLTC tests than the NEDC. The CLTC test cycle also includes more stops than the WLTP cycle, and the CLTC testing speed limit (114 km/h) is lower than both NEDC and WLTP.
<h3>EPA vs WLTP Range</h3>
The EPA ratings of electric vehicles are the most accurate, according to the real-world test results. The EPA range estimates are approximately 11 percent lower than the WLTP range figures. For example, an electric vehicle with 100 miles (or kilometers) of WLTP range is probably going to get an EPA range estimate of around 89 miles (or kilometers), or 11 mi./km less range than the WLTP standard.
Besides EPA offering the most realistic results, WLTP is the second most trustworthy standard for determining the real range of an electric vehicle. If you want to learn the real range of your future EV, look for EPA and WLTP figures. NEDC and CLTC ranges are not very close to real-world data, as the actual driving tests showed.
<h3>CLTC vs WLTP</h3>

According to the Chinese sources, CLTC estimates are mostly higher than both WLTP and NEDC range figures. For example, an electric vehicle that has a 398km WLTP and a 484 km NEDC range estimate scored more range (509 km) when CLTC testing procedures were followed. The reason for this is that the Chinese authorities wanted to create a new testing standard that takes into account Chinese roads, traffic conditions, and Chinese driver habits. As a result, we have a more optimistic EV range test standard on our hands. 
WLTP is way more accurate than CLTC, as the data shows. The new EV range standard that replaced NEDC in China is clearly more optimistic than the other standards. Overall, CLTC range figures tend to be 15 to 25 percent higher than WLTP. Most of the Chinese EV makers already started using CLTC to show range data. Even Tesla updated its range figures accordingly.
The CLTC is in its early stage to become the only range estimation standard in China, the world&#8217;s largest EV market. That means overstated EV range figures will still be a headache for us. But it is the only range standard that prioritizes Chinese driving habits and China&#8217;s road conditions. So, from now on keep in mind that CLTC is actually a very accurate range test, but only in China. You better find yourself another range estimate, if you&#8217;re not living in there.
