The Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD has opened orders for the Seal U model. For the 2024 model year, there is a significant reduction in prices, almost $3,000.
Having surpassed the 800,000 sales mark in three years, the Seal U will initially come to our country only with the plug-in hybrid version. This motor option stands out with a starting price of $18,000.

⚡ Chinese ZEEKR极氪 announced a major update to its first car, the 001, by replacing over 2,000 components.
🔋 The 2024 Zeekr 001, available with 95 and 100 kWh battery options, now features an 800V architecture. This not only boosts charging speeds up to 350 kW but also significantly enhances the vehicle’s efficiency.
🟢 Transitioning to the new-generation thermal management system called PTM 2.0 along with the battery, the 4.9-meter electric crossover can operate efficiently in both high and low temperatures.
💨 The new 001 offers a single-motor option producing 310 kW (422 HP) and a dual-motor option capable of generating 560 kW (762 HP). Hence, it’s expected to have a starting price around $40,000.

🔋The 2024 BYD Han boasts a range of 506 km (CLTC), which extends up to 715 kilometers in the version with an 85.44 kWh battery. During today&#8217;s event, it was emphasized for the first time that the car features a silicon carbide chip inverter and an 800V architecture. However, the charging speed of the largest battery being limited to 155 kW indicates that the entire high-voltage system is not yet ready for 800V.
🚗In the performance version of the car, a dual-motor powertrain capable of producing 517 horsepower and 700 Nm of torque is used, achieving a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 3.9 seconds.

Audi, using NCM811 cathode cells produced by Chinese company Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) in Germany, states that the larger cell form facilitates battery production. Additionally, it emphasizes that the newly developed smart thermal management system enhances battery life by continuously conditioning the battery and reduces charging time.
Regarding the engine, the company claims a 50% increase in efficiency compared to the first-generation electric Audis and states that it can produce more power with smaller motors by increasing power density by 62%. It should be noted that the Q6 e-tron uses an asynchronous ASM motor at the front and a permanent magnet synchronous PSM motor at the rear, differentiating it from the electric #Macan.

Chinese truck and heavy equipment manufacturer #Sany has started delivering its new truck, which can reach a range of 500 km on a single charge.
The truck, named #Jiangshan SE-437, stands out from its competitors with its 437 kWh battery that can be swapped in less than five minutes. Additionally, the truck is equipped with dual charging sockets, providing support for DC charging exceeding 400 kW.
Last year, nearly half of the electric trucks sold in China had swappable batteries. Demand for these trucks, which can be ready to hit the road with a fully charged battery within minutes thanks to new swap stations being set up every week, continues to grow.
Meanwhile, it’s worth noting that SANY Group developed this swappable large battery platform in collaboration with Gotion Inc. a partner of Volkswagen Group.

🛻 Cybertruck can make a full wheel turn at low speed with a steering angle narrower than 180 degrees and at high speed thanks to steer-by-wire. It can change the vehicle&#8217;s steering/wheel rotation ratio within seconds and restrict movement. Thus, a safer driving performance with high maneuverability/accuracy and a narrow turning circle can be achieved.
⚡Tesla emphasizes that thanks to its switch to the 48V system, it can power the motors required for steer-by-wire. The company also adds that as the mechanical steering was replaced by a few small motors, cables, and controllers, a larger space was created in the cabin and the vehicle weight decreased.

What Does Tesla Cybertruck’s Steer-by-Wire Technology Mean?

Hiroki Nakajima, the Chief Technology Officer of Toyota, has acknowledged the failure of the hydrogen fuel cell car and announced that the production of these vehicles will be abandoned for the time being.
Speaking to Autocar at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2023, the Toyota CTO attributed the failure to establish a network of hydrogen refueling stations to its challenging nature. Therefore, they will focus on hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles instead of passenger cars.

Stating that they will increase the efficiency by 20% and reduce the cost by half with the new generation hydrogen fuel cell they are currently developing, the experienced manager also left the door open for the passenger car version of the cell to be used in electric trucks and heavy vehicles.
Hiroki Nakajima also touched on solid-state battery studies. He stated that the battery, which will be launched in 2027-2028, can only be used in performance-oriented electric vehicles in the first place due to its high cost.

BP Pulse, the EV charging division of BP, has announced that Europe’s first public charging corridor for medium and heavy-duty electric trucks has been built along a significant logistics route in Germany.
The Rhine-Alpine corridor is one of Europe’s busiest freight routes connecting key North Sea ports in Belgium and the Netherlands with the Mediterranean port of Genoa in Italy connecting through a network of roads stretching in total 1,300km. The new EV charging corridor along this route will have eight e-truck charging stations with ultra-fast 300kw charging sockets.
BP Pulse does not disclose the number of chargers for each station, however, the published press photo shows two chargers, with three connection ports each.
The new chargers have been installed at service stations operated by Aral, BP’s local German retail brand. Each 300kW charging port can charge more than 20 electric trucks daily and can charge up to 200 kilometers (124 miles) in around 45 minutes using ultra-fast charging ports.
There are currently six charging stations along a 600-kilometer stretch of the Rhine-Alpine corridor and another two will be opened at some point in the future. After the final two stations, an electric truck will cover over 600 kilometers across Germany.

Johannes Pallasch, from Germany&#8217;s National Centre for Charging Infrastructure, part of the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport said that e-trucks will have a significant role in reducing  CO2 emissions in road freight transport. Also stated that &#8220;As with passenger cars, the switch to electromobility can only succeed with a reliable and needs-based charging infrastructure. With today&#8217;s opening, Aral is taking an important step in this direction.&#8221;
It is estimated that there will be more than 270,000 e-trucks on the road by 2030 in Europe. Those trucks on the road will require up to 140,000 public and destination electric charging ports.

Bp Pulse to Build Europe’s First Charging Corridor for e-Trucks

<a href="https://www.licarco.com/cars">Electric vehicles</a> are getting really popular, but the main concerns, such as short range and long charging times that hold conventional vehicle owners back from switching sides are still yet to be solved. That is where higher-voltage electric vehicles are coming into play. Tesla recently announced its 1000-volt system and hinted more Tesla vehicles will benefit from the new tech. Future EVs will eventually make the switch from 400V to higher voltage systems.
800V or higher voltage electric vehicles are capable of delivering <a href="https://www.licarco.com/news/top-15-ev-charging-networks-in-the-us">ultra-fast charging</a> rates and offer higher performance while improving the efficiency of the all systems. 800V electric vehicles can only be possible by employing an 800V battery and using SiC (Silicone Carbide) inverter, proper cabling, OBC (On-board Charger), DCDC converter and other electrical equipments that support higher voltage levels. Conventional electric vehicles come with 400V electrical architecture as standard. Because of the voltage limit, today&#8217;s electric vehicles are limited to a maximum of 400-volt when they are connected to a DC charging station. In order to reach higher charge rates, current levels should go up to 600A or even more, which is not ideal for the infrastructure that charging stations heavily rely on.
The first higher-voltage EV is the Porsche Taycan, which has a cutting-edge 800V inverter built-in. Its DC charging rate can go as high as 270 kW with the proper charging setup. After that Hyundai and Kia developed an alternative 800V charging tech to avoid using an expensive 800V SiC inverter. In late 2021, Lucid Motors launched its first vehicle Lucid Air with an industry-leading 924V system developed by <a href="https://eepower.com/news/wolfspeed-announces-the-lucid-air-is-using-its-sic-power-modules/#">Wolfspeed</a>. And one year later, Tesla unveiled its first 1000V vehicle architecture with the launch of the tri-motor electric truck Tesla Semi. <a href="https://spectrum.ieee.org/ev-charging-800-volt">General Motors</a>, Volkswagen, and, of course, Chinese brands such as Aion, Avatr, Xpeng, Zeekr, BYD, Voyah and Li Auto have also been developing 800V high-voltage electrical systems for their EVs.

<h2>Faster Charging Compared to 400V Electric Vehicles</h2>

800V or higher voltage systems allow electric vehicles to be charged at as high as 480 kW, <a href="https://www.licarco.com/xpeng-g9-awd">Xpeng G9</a> proved. Regular 400V electric vehicles aren&#8217;t capable of doing that, because of the charging infrastructure&#8217;s current limit. When you plug your 400V vehicle into a DC charger, you limit your session to 400-volt. To provide faster charging speeds, EV charger should deliver more current, sometimes as high as 600A or even more (The third-gen Tesla Superchargers can deliver up to 660-amper). In order to increase the current, thicker and water-cooled cables are needed. Even using these expensive cables are not enough to lower down the charge efficiency, as conduction losses will increase up to nine times.
EV manufacturers have been developing 800V charging technologies to overcome this fast-charging problem. Some companies such as Porsche/Audi, Lucid Motors, and Xpeng use SiC inverters inside their EVs. These next-gen SiC inverters can handle higher voltages and also improve efficiency. Hyundai and Kia took a different approach to this matter. Korean automakers developed a technology that manages to provide 800-volt charging by using electric motors as generator and a regular IGBT inverter.
Thanks to more advanced electronics, 800-volt charging enables vehicle owners to reach up to 480 kW DC charging rates. For instance, Xpeng G9 and Aion LX Plus are already on sale that support ultra-fast 480+ kW charging. Lucid Air can go as high as 300 kW. Porsche Taycan did perform similiarly. Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 is also capable of delivering up to 240 kW DC charging speeds. 800V charging is definitely the future of EVs!
<h3>More Efficient &amp; More Powerful Electric Drivetrains</h3>

By switching to a 800V architecture, EV manufacturers can make use of higher voltage motors as well. Porsche is the first company to implement an 800V electric motor into its vehicles. Higher voltage improves overall power density of the motor unit and it reduces the maximum torque required to achieve the same output power due to extended RPM range.
As the DC link voltage of the EV motor units increase, the current levels decrease. This leads to lower copper loss and improves efficiency of the electrical traction systems. Higher voltage motors are also tend to produce more power than lower voltage solutions.
From the efficiency perspective, the next-gen SiC inverters used inside 800V electric vehicles are also much more efficient. <a href="https://www.licarco.com/byd-yangwang-u8">BYD recently unveiled</a> its first SiC inverter developed in-house, which scores an efficiency level of 99.5 percent.
<h3>800V Architectures Mean Lighter Electric Cars</h3>

800-volt electrical architectures can be created by using thinner cables between the battery pack and the inverter, DC charging port, OBC, and other equipments. As a result, 800V electric vehicles will use less copper and that would reduce the overall weight of the car.
Higher voltage electric motors are also significantly lighter and more power-dense than regular lower voltage units. That means 800V electric vehicles can be equipped with smaller, lighter motors. That creates more room for batteries as well.
<h3>Reduced Cost of Cabling, Less Copper Used Inside the Vehicle</h3>
Electric vehicles use more copper than any other vehicles. It takes 2 to 4 times more copper to build an EV than an ICE vehicle. But unlike 400V EVs, higher voltage systems don&#8217;t require thick copper cables. That will not only help manufacturers reduce the cost of cabling but also ease up the global copper supply chain. Because EV batteries and heavy investments in EV charging infrastructure have already been causing problems for the copper industry, thinner cables will help in the near future.
Here are some disadvantages of choosing 800V electrical system over a regular 400V architecture:
&#8211; Higher cost of electrical insulation and clearance
&#8211; Higher voltage battery packs tend to perform less reliable than 400V systems, because they contain larger number of series connections. The impact of single cell failure in a pack like this would be much higher than the 400V batteries with more parallel cells.
&#8211; Lower voltage battery packs are more energy-dense than the similiarly designed 800V batteries, which is the result of all the additional electrical clearance requirements around high voltage systems and the much larger BMS.

What is 800V Electric Vehicle? | What are the Benefits of 800V Systems?

Daimler Trucks has opened the eTruck Charging Park in partnership with Netze BW, a subsidiary of EnBW.  The charging station is in Wörth, Germany and this is the place where the German company manufactures the all-electric eActros and eEconic trucks.
The charging station for e-trucks is equipped with a total of six different charging units from the companies Siemens, ABB, Ekoenergetyka, and Alpitronic, with outputs between 40 kW and 300 kW on an area of around 2,000 square meters.
Daimler Trucks claims that the customers will have an opportunity to experience the efficiency, range, and charging characteristics of the electric trucks. Also, this will allow customers to develop a complete electric solution for their personal needs with the assistance of the experts on site. The park is also equipped with a photovoltaic system on the roof and an energy storage system. As a “proof of concept”, it is intended to demonstrate possibilities for an efficient power supply for the charging columns.

Michael Scheib, Head of Product Management at Mercedes-Benz Truck states that the main goal of the company is to offer our customers more than just an electric truck in the transformation to e-mobility.  He also says that the German manufacturer intends to provide an integrated solution that includes consulting and charging infrastructure solutions from a single source. “Our charging park for customers in Wörth is an integral part of this approach and shows customers, practically and tangibly, what charging infrastructure for their application can look like,” Scheib adds.
Axel Hausen, Head of eMob Major Projects, Marketing &amp; Special Projects at Netze BW’s Services Division, says: “Besides the technological development of all the necessary components, the development of the electric charging infrastructure is one of the factors crucial to the success of electric heavy-duty transport. Together with our parent company, EnBW, we are contributing a lot of expertise in charging infrastructure and the energy industry to the project. In Wörth, we are working with investors such as e-fleet operators, truck manufacturers, industrial and commercial customers, and municipalities to develop individual charging solutions, especially for depot logistics, that will help electric heavy-duty transport take off.”
Overall, opening a charging park seems to be a different approach to familiarizing potential customers with electric trucks and their specific needs. If this can help convince fleets to switch to EVs, we might see other manufacturers also building similar stations like this.

While Volvo Cars is trying to find ways to create an EV charging corridor in the Pacific Northwest, Volvo Trucks is also attempting to build another charging network for its all-electric semi-trucks in production and it has already started making partnerships with key players.
Volvo is about to ally with Shell Recharge Solutions (formerly known as Greenlots), TEC Equipment, Affinity Truck Center, and Western Truck Center. The partnership aims to build a widely accessible medium- and heavy-duty electric vehicle (MHD EV) charging network along with the most important port cities and industrial centers throughout California.
The California Energy Commission (CEC) under BESTFIT has granted the Volvo Group a $2 million endowment to begin “the Electrified Charging Corridor Project”.  The project will help to overcome the problems of long-range MHD EV deployments and slow widespread adoption.

Peter Voorhoeve, president of Volvo Trucks North America, explains the project’s goal as opening the door to a completely electrified freight future in which zero-tailpipe emission MHD EV trucks will be no longer limited to short-mileage and return-to-base operations and will reach far and wide across the state. He also stated that:
“We are excited to begin construction of the Electrified Charging Corridor Project this year in collaboration with these pioneering truck dealerships so that we can further support fleets in successfully integrating battery-electric trucks into their operations, including our Volvo VNR Electric model. With the support of the CEC helping to drive and manifest this project, we will see an accelerated progression with ripple effects across the industry.”
The Electrified Charging Corridor Project has three main targets for convenient charging. First, it will help small business fleets that will be in financial hardship if they make a major investment into the charging network. Secondly, the project will create opportunities for the fleets looking to pilot an MHD EV through rent or short-term leasing. And thirdly, fleets that need an OEM-neutral location to “opportunity charge” along their route will benefit from the charging network of Volvo Group.
CEC Commissioner Patty Monahan states that “The Energy Commission is thrilled to support the Electrified Charging Corridor Project, which will help California meet its goals for zeroing out tailpipe emissions from trucks.”
Volvo Trucks claims that the project will begin very quickly later this year with all five stations planned to be available by the end of 2023.

Volvo to build a charging corridor for its all-electric trucks

Maersk is the largest ocean shipping company in the world. Maersk does not just unload the containers to the parts and sail away, it also distributes the shipments to the freight terminals nearby or around the country. The Danish company has partnered with the Swedish startup Einride and added 300 electric trucks to its distribution fleet.
Today, diesel-powered Class 8 heavy trucks are used to carry the unloaded containers to their destination. While the diesel engine is one of the crucial elements of the shipping industry, it also pollutes heavily the air in and around seaports. The air along the highways between the ports of LA and Long Beach and freight terminals is filled with crud and almost unbreathable because of the exhaust pipes of the diesel trucks.
Einride is a Swedish startup founded in 2016 and developing electric vehicles that can ply between freight terminals. It has signed a 5-year partnership agreement with Maersk for 300 electrical Class 8 trucks. The battery-powered vehicles will be delivered between 2023 and 2025. They will be used by Maersk’s Performance Team, the North American warehousing, distribution, and transportation business of the company.

Maersk CEO Vincent Clerc pointed out that this is an important step towards the decarbonization of the distribution process. He also stated that Maersk has a comprehensive decarbonization plan for its Ocean activities, constituting 93% of all company-related emissions. The long-term goal of the Danish company in North America is to transform its fleet into a fully electric one to offer an environment-friendly alternative for short hauling.
The first trucks of the Maersk-Einride partnership will be the Class 8 8TT Gen 3 tractors made by BYD at its production plant in Southern California. Maersk will buy trucks with Einride technology manufactured by other brands. With this, Einride’s digital road freight operating system will be first and largely used in these trucks. The system of the Swedish company centralizes the decision-making and makes freight distribution more efficient.
In the last years, Maersk has increased its transportation solutions and offers not only its maritime customers. In 2021, the company brought in many entities, including the logistics provider Performance Team and its 58 US facilities last April and recently the Pilot Freight and technology provider Visible SCM.
The new electric trucks of Maersk will be on the roads of selected US cities. With the 5-year contract with Einride, Maersk will complete up to 1 million delivery events using zero-emissions trucks.   Einride’s Saga will also provide 150 charging stations and connectivity systems to the Danish freight company.

Maersk & Einride Partner to Introduce Class 8 Electric Trucks to the US

Volta Trucks, a Swedish electric truck startup, received €230 million in its Series C funding to support the start of production for its first fully electric vehicle. European EV producer signed a contract with Steyr Automotive last year to build electric trucks together at Volkswagen&#8217;s heavy-duty vehicle factory in Austria.
The first Volta vehicle to be manufactured will be called Volta Zero, a 16-tonne electric truck. Volta has already received more than 5,000 soft orders with a total value of €1.2 billion. Zero will offer up to 200 kilometers of range on a single charge. It will also have two battery pack options, the base model with 150-kWh capacity and a 225-kWh high capacity trim. The electric truck will carry up to 8,200 kg of payload, and reach up to 90 km/h when fully loaded.
<h2>Volta Zero to enter mass-production at MAN&#8217;s old Austria plant</h2>
Steyr Automotive is the manufacturing partner of the Volta Trucks, as the two companies signed an agreement last September to jointly produce Zero truck. It will enter mass production at Volkswagen&#8217;s Steyr plant where MAN trucks are manufactured. VW will end production in that facility as soon as this year, after that Volta Trucks will move in to start operation. Swedish startup estimates an initial production of 5,000 trucks in the first year. The annual production capacity of the old MAN factory will be around 27,500, according to Steyr Automotive&#8217;s plan.
Aside from the 16-tonne Zero truck, Volta will also design and manufactured both 7.5-tonne and 12.5-tonne fully electric trucks. €230 million Series C funding will mostly cover its financial needs for the production of Volta Zero. It has already gathered more than 5,000 orders just by showing some prototypes to commercial buyers, which is enough for investors to put hundreds of millions of euros.
Volta Trucks will start deliveries of its electric truck in mid-2022. Mass production is also due in 2022. Here is the promo video that shows Volta Zero&#8217;s special design:

Tesla has been preparing for the start of production at its newest factory in the US. The automaker recently moved its headquarters from Fremont, California to Gigafactory Texas, as the factory site is getting crowded with more Tesla employees every day. The next phase of the factory probably includes the production of the famous electric pickup <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/cars/tesla-cybertruck-dual-motor/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cybertruck</a>.
Texas facility will double Tesla&#8217;s US production output when it is fully ramped up. Once the Cybertruck and Tesla&#8217;s first heavy-duty electric vehicle Tesla Semi production phases are complete, the overall production output of the Giga Texas will reach more than 500,000 vehicles per year. 
Gigafactory Texas will solve American carmaker&#8217;s &#8216;delivery problem&#8217; once starts operating. Right now, a new customer ready to pay for a brand-new Tesla EV needs to wait almost a year to take delivery of its order. The Model Y is the most popular Tesla in the market, Texas facility will surely help Tesla clear up its tight delivery schedule.
