The Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD has opened orders for the Seal U model. For the 2024 model year, there is a significant reduction in prices, almost $3,000.
Having surpassed the 800,000 sales mark in three years, the Seal U will initially come to our country only with the plug-in hybrid version. This motor option stands out with a starting price of $18,000.

⚡ Chinese ZEEKR极氪 announced a major update to its first car, the 001, by replacing over 2,000 components.
🔋 The 2024 Zeekr 001, available with 95 and 100 kWh battery options, now features an 800V architecture. This not only boosts charging speeds up to 350 kW but also significantly enhances the vehicle’s efficiency.
🟢 Transitioning to the new-generation thermal management system called PTM 2.0 along with the battery, the 4.9-meter electric crossover can operate efficiently in both high and low temperatures.
💨 The new 001 offers a single-motor option producing 310 kW (422 HP) and a dual-motor option capable of generating 560 kW (762 HP). Hence, it’s expected to have a starting price around $40,000.

🟢The 5-meter sedan features a base model with a 150 kW motor, a 60.48 kWh LFP battery, and 110 kW DC charging support. All models come equipped with the new Level 2+ intelligent driving system, DiPilot 100, which has been in development for over 1,000 days. Additionally, the new generation intelligent suspension system, DiSus-C, has been integrated into the 2024 model to enhance Han&#8217;s comfort.

🔋The 2024 BYD Han boasts a range of 506 km (CLTC), which extends up to 715 kilometers in the version with an 85.44 kWh battery. During today&#8217;s event, it was emphasized for the first time that the car features a silicon carbide chip inverter and an 800V architecture. However, the charging speed of the largest battery being limited to 155 kW indicates that the entire high-voltage system is not yet ready for 800V.
🚗In the performance version of the car, a dual-motor powertrain capable of producing 517 horsepower and 700 Nm of torque is used, achieving a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 3.9 seconds.

Audi, using NCM811 cathode cells produced by Chinese company Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) in Germany, states that the larger cell form facilitates battery production. Additionally, it emphasizes that the newly developed smart thermal management system enhances battery life by continuously conditioning the battery and reduces charging time.
Regarding the engine, the company claims a 50% increase in efficiency compared to the first-generation electric Audis and states that it can produce more power with smaller motors by increasing power density by 62%. It should be noted that the Q6 e-tron uses an asynchronous ASM motor at the front and a permanent magnet synchronous PSM motor at the rear, differentiating it from the electric #Macan.

After Nevada state officials&#8217; confirmation, Tesla finally announced their next big factory investment at Giga Nevada today. Elon Musk&#8217;s company will invest over $3.6 billion to build Tesla&#8217;s largest EV battery cell production plant in the world.

Giga Nevada, also known as Gigafactory 1, is somewhat of a joint venture between Japanese battery maker Panasonic and Tesla. The initial investment made in 2014. Since then, both parties spent a total of $6.2 billion to create one of the largest manufacturing sites in the United States. According to Tesla, as of today, the Giga Nevada team has successfully produced more than 7.3 billion battery cells, 1.5 million battery packs, 3.6 million drive units, and 1 million energy modules.

The next phase of this investment will cost over $3.6 billion and includes a 100 GWh 4680 cell factory, as well as the first high-volume Tesla Semi factory. Tesla has been manufacturing its in-house 4680 cells at Kato Road, California for quite sometime. This new project aims to build Tesla&#8217;s largest battery cell factory. Tesla Semi production will also be ramped up. The all-electric semi truck is currently in low-volume production at Storey County facility near Giga Nevada.

Giga Nevada is capable of producing 35 GWh of battery cells annually, which is enough to manufacture around 500K electric vehicles per year. But that is way less, not even half of what Tesla needs to put into its EVs. Because of that, LG Chem and CATL, two major battery cell suppliers of Tesla, have been shipping billions of cells to Tesla factories every year.
Texas-based EV maker is finally taking this matter into its own hands. 4680 cell manufacturing process is still in the works before reaching perfection at Kato Road. The dry-coating technique that helps Tesla reduce manufacturing costs and the environmental impact of cell production is yet to be scaled up. But there is enough time to improve before starting mass production at the new factory near Giga Nevada.
The estimated capacity of this factory will be 100 GWh, a huge capacity to produce enough batteries for 2 million electric vehicles. Yesterday, Reuters published an article about Tesla&#8217;s 4680 cells and how Elon Musk&#8217;s company is only halfway through making its special batteries into the mass-production. But the main point of this article is not the delay itself, it is why dry-coating battery electrode manufacturing process, which is the cause of this delay, is crucial to Tesla&#8217;s ultimate goal: producing cheaper, longer lifetime lithium-ion batteries.

Popular news outlet contacted a dozen of experts familiar with Tesla&#8217;s battery manufacturing efforts. Almost all of these experts confirmed that Tesla is struggling with the mass production of 4680 cells at its Kato Road facility in California. The reason for this is the new electrode manufacturing process called dry-coating/or DBE (Dry Battery Electrode). Tesla acquired this tech from Maxwell Technologies, a San Diego-based ultracapacitor company it bought in 2019. But implementing this new technology into mass production is not as easy as Elon Musk thought.
The good news is that Tesla will eventually enter high-volume production of its 4680 cells sometime in 2023. It will help Tesla halve the cost of <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/2021-tesla-model-y-performance" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Model Y</a>&#8216;s battery pack, saving almost $5,500 per vehicle. That&#8217;s 8 percent of a Model Y&#8217;s US retail price.
Using dry-coating tech will not only cut costs but also help EV-maker rapidly ramp up their battery production. According to research data mentioned by famous Youtuber <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3iLZmz_IQt4&amp;ab_channel=TheLimitingFactor" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Limited Factor</a>, dry-coating process will speed up cell production 7 times compared to conventional wet-coating methods. New tech will dramatically decrease initial battery production investment as well.

24M, a UK-based battery manufacturing company, is also betting high on dry-coating technology. According to a document issued by this company, using the new tech will help battery makers avoid spending approx. 22 hours in the electrode creation phase, and buying expensive tools for mixing the solvent with electrodes, vacuum drying, solvent recovery, etc.
Dry-coating is more environmental-friendly than any other electrode processing method available today. This method will allow companies to use up to 10 times less space for the battery plants, reduce their energy bills up to 10 times by not using huge vacuum dryers, and increase the energy density of cells without going through costly R&amp;D phases. Thanks to all those advantages, lithium-ion batteries will be cheaper, initial investments will be lower, and battery plants will be smaller.
Dry-coating will definitely be a tremendous advancement in the field of battery manufacturing. Cheaper batteries mean that electrification of the automotive industry will speed up quite a lot and average EV prices will hopefully go down.
