Toyota has announced a new household battery pack that will compete with Tesla's Powerwall for domestic electrical batteries.
Toyota has announced the launch of a household battery energy storage system in accordance with the principles of “safety, extended service life, excellent quality, reasonably priced, and outstanding performance.”
The O-Uchi Kyuden System incorporates several years of EVs improvement as well as onboard components according to the manufacturer.
It’s intended for everyday use (off-peak electricity, residential PV system support, and EV charging) and an urgent power supply (all along power shortages originating from natural disasters).
The battery has a storage capacity of 8.7 kWh and can provide up to 5.5 kWh of power. The press is still silent. The issue is whether many units can be combined into a single system for increased capacity and power.
An intriguing feature is the bidirectional vehicle-to-home capabilities (up to 1.1 kWh output) of the Toyota O-Uchi Kyuden System, which is enabled by an AC charging outlet and a special adaptor.
The system is unique to Toyota. It can provide power two times at 100V AC from EVs (HEV, PHEV, BEV, FCEV), and may utilize electricity stored in electrified vehicles as a backup power source all through power outages. Toyota xEVs can provide electricity via onboard AC (100V) outlets in Japan.
It is possible to see the status and adjust the parameters of the system using a wireless LAN router connected to a hybrid power conditioner and an app.
The Toyota O-Uchi Kyuden System is only available in Japan for the time being. The company has recently begun taking orders, with sales set to begin in August, through home builders and general contractors.
