The Japanese giant is joining Google’s Waymo in its efforts to develop a self-driving car platform.
In the near future, Waymo’s technology could be integrated into autonomous Toyota vehicles.
Previously, Toyota invested $400 million in Chinese firm Pony AI and announced a $3.3 billion autonomous driving software development project with NTT last year. However, the company still lacks its own autopilot technology for its vehicles.
Waymo, rumored to potentially launch autonomous vehicles for consumer purchase in the coming years, could gain a significant advantage through this deal, transitioning from a robotaxi company to an automaker.
Working on a 6th-generation autonomous kit with only 13 sensors (down from 29) and significantly lower costs, Waymo is also collaborating with companies like Geely (Zeekr), Hyundai, Uber, and Volvo alongside Toyota.
