According to the quality research report by J.D. Power, plug-in hybrids were identified as the most problematic vehicle type.
Plug-in hybrids, which combine an internal combustion engine with all its subsystems and a high-voltage electric architecture, are the most complex vehicle type on the market.
The dual power system brings a higher likelihood of malfunctions and increased maintenance costs. The research revealed that even fully electric vehicles, theoretically more prone to issues due to advanced digital features and autonomous driving, have fewer problems than plug-in hybrids.
J.D. Power’s study, which determines the average number of issues per 100 vehicles in new cars, states that the least problematic brand is Lexus with 166 issues. It is followed by Nissan with 169, Hyundai with 173, and Jaguar with 175.
Toyota and Tesla, with an average of 200 issues, are positioned in the middle of the list. The most problematic brands are Audi (269), Volvo (258), Infiniti (242), and Volkswagen (225).
