Audi, which has seen declining sales and is preparing to lay off thousands of employees to cut costs, has confirmed that it is moving up its more affordable electric car project.
The German company's CEO, Gernot Döllner, announced that the electric model at the A3 level, previously slated for a 2027 market release, will enter production next year at the Ingolstadt factory.
While technical details of the electric Audi A3 remain unclear, it will differ from the Q4 e-tron model produced by Volkswagen. The vehicle is said to stand out from other cars on the MEB platform thanks to a massive €8 billion investment in Audi’s German factories.
In 2024, Audi sold 1.67 million cars, marking an 11.8% decline compared to 2023. This drop also affected its electric vehicle segment (164,000 sales, down 7.8% year-over-year).
With electric vehicles accounting for less than 10% of its sales, Audi is facing demand challenges, particularly in China, where the shift to electric vehicles has accelerated faster than expected. This is the driving force behind the acceleration of more accessible electric vehicle projects and the collaboration with SAIC in China.
