The export competition between Chery and BYD is heating up!

The competition between Chery, which sells nearly one out of every two cars outside China, and another Chinese manufacturer, BYD, is intensifying. Until 2023, BYD's monthly exports were around 10,000 units, but in May 2025, it exported 89,000 electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, reaching a total of 303,000 cars sold outside China since the start of the year.

Ordering massive ships and building next-generation port-integrated factories to become a global automotive group, BYD appears poised to potentially claim Chery’s 22-year title by the end of the year if it continues growing at the same pace.

Meanwhile, Chery is accelerating its transition to electric vehicles, with plans to launch models in 2026 featuring its own batteries to compete with BYD and Geely. Despite investing in diverse areas like humanoid robots in the field of artificial intelligence, Chery faces significant challenges competing against BYD, which produces its own semiconductor chips, battery cells, autonomous driving technologies, and power electronics solutions.

As the competition between Chinese brands extends to the global market, customers are expected to benefit the most from this rivalry.
