The 2010 Nissan Leaf, with a 30 kWh battery, had a range of about 170 km. Fifteen years later, a YouTube creator decided to upgrade their vehicle and successfully doubled its range with a battery swap.
The creator, known as 'Battery Man,' installed the 62 kWh battery from a 2022 Leaf model into the older vehicle. Using a few connection adapters and some software tweaks, they completed the swap in just three hours.
Even if original battery packs and cells for older electric vehicles are discontinued, third-party battery modules or next-generation packs from the same manufacturer can be used for upgrades.
After the upgrade, the 2010 Nissan Leaf’s range increased from 172 km to 367 km, potentially making it usable for another 15 years.
