Struggling with a financial crisis, Nissan plans to close 7 of its 17 factories to survive. According to Nikkei, Foxconn is eyeing one of the most critical facilities.
Aiming to become a contract manufacturer in the electric vehicle market, just as it is in the electronics sector with iPhone production, Taiwan-based Foxconn is in talks to produce at Nissan's Oppama plant in Japan.
Last year, Nissan utilized only 40% of Oppama’s 240,000-unit capacity. Instead of closing the factory, which includes critical testing facilities, Nissan is open to partnering with Foxconn to reduce costs.
Recently signing a deal with Mitsubishi to produce electric vehicles and buses/vans, Foxconn could use Nissan’s factory for these operations. Additionally, for its own brand, Foxtron, to go global, establishing production outside Taiwan and China is of critical importance.
