GAC Motor, which has been rumored to collaborate with Turkey’s Togg for joint production, and another Chinese manufacturer, Xpeng, may have chosen Austria for their first European operation.
According to a report by Kleine Zeitung, GAC and Xpeng are set to roll out their first European-made vehicles from the Magna Steyr facility in June 2025 through SKD (Semi-Knocked-Down) assembly production.
Previously having produced dozens of different car models for brands like Jaguar, Mercedes, Audi, BMW, and Toyota, the Austrian company Magna Steyr might lead the local production operations of Chinese manufacturers in Europe.
Due to high customs duties exceeding 30%, both brands aim to shift production outside of China to sell electric vehicles in Europe. It was previously claimed that GAC Motor had considered partnering with Togg to produce vehicles in Gemlik, Turkey.
