BYD Tang EV revamped for the 2022 model year. It has both a new front face and a redesigned interior. Thanks to its next-gen 108.8-kWh BYD Blade Battery, 2022 BYD Tang EV also offers more range starting from 635 kilometers for the AWD version, and 730 kilometers for the RWD Long Range model. 
 
BYD has started delivering its new large SUV last summer. 2022 Tang EV pricing starts at 300,000 yuan (~$45,000). 517 HP AWD option is priced much higher at 340,000 CNY, or around $51,000 in China. New Tang EV&#8217;s European pricing starts at €72,000.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 is the Korean carmaker’s first ever fully dedicated battery electric car. It is built on a unique platform, e-GMP (Electric Global Modular Platform) developed by Hyundai and Kia together.
Compared to <a href="https://www.licarco.com/2021-tesla-model-3-performance/">Tesla Model 3</a> and <a href="https://www.licarco.com/polestar-2-long-range-dual-motor/">Polestar 2</a>, Ioniq 5 looks like a boxy hatchback, Hyundai calls it a crossover. Fastest Ioniq 5 can go from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds. It has a moveable center console on the inside, safety features like blindspot indicator, lane keeping, and remote parking capabilities.
<h2>Ioniq 5 Performance</h2>
Ioniq 5 has two battery pack options, Standard Range version offers 58 kWh capacity, whereas Long Range models will be equipped with a 77.4 kWh battery. Hyundai also offers two drivetrains for both of these battery options. RWD has a single electric motor and up to 217 horsepower. Those who wants to get more power will choose the AWD option for dual motors and up to 306 HP. It can tow a caravan up to 1,600 kilos of weight.
The stalk behind the steering wheel allows driver to easily change gear, put the vehicle on parking mode etc. Ioniq 5’s smooth driving experience will improve with very clever blindspot indicator feature. Whenever you put an indicator on, cameras from the each side of the vehicle will show you the blindspots, making Ioniq 5 much more safer to drive. There’s also a head-up display (HUD) that includes the vehicle’s speed, navigation etc.
<h2>Ioniq 5 Design and Features</h2>
In terms of appearance, Hyundai Ioniq 5 looks like a hatchback, but it’s actually a crossover, or an all-electric CUV. When Hyundai designed the new Ioniq 5, they took a lot of inspiration from the first vehicle they actually manufactured. It is the Hyundai Pony from the 1980s. It has got a very interest retro design, standing out from the crowd with its boxy shape. The headlights and taillights which use square shaped LEDs are also retro styled.
In profile, Ioniq 5 has an enormous wheelbase of over three meters, longer than a Range Rover Sport, which give this electric Hyundai plenty of space inside.
On the front of the vehicle, there is a little frunk, enough for a few grocery bags or a backpack, not even close to the capacity Teslas and <a href="https://www.licarco.com/ford-mustang-mach-e-gt/">Ford Mustang Mach-E</a> offer.
The interior of the new Hyundai Ioniq 5 is as unique as its exterior design. Modular design allows Hyundai to equip its new vehicle with two 12 inch displays, one for the full-touch infotainment system, and the other acting as a digital gauge cluster. Thanks to its long wheelbase and flat floor, Ioniq 5’s center console can slide back almost 15 centimeters, creating a spacious car experience for the driver and passengers.
The Ioniq 5 got five USB ports, a 220V outlet for any tools and gadgets you want to power, a glove draw instead of a traditional glovebox, seats that can be almost fully recline, Bose sound system etc.
<h2>Ioniq 5 Range and Charging</h2>
Ioniq 5 has the fastest charging technology in its segment. There are two charging systems, 400 volt and 800 volt electrical arcitectures available for the Ioniq 5. With the highest setup, all-electric CUV can be charged with 350 kW DC plugs, from 10 to 80 percent in roughly 18 minutes.
There is also the V2L (Vehicle to Load) feature that turn Ioniq 5 into a power source for your electronic devices, and simple tools that can be powered via a simple outlet. It allows a charging speed up to 3.6 kW. It is even possible to charge another electric vehicle with Hyundai Ioniq 5.

Chinese electric vehicle brands are a top priority at Licarco because the EV market has become increasingly dominated by pure electric Chinese cars. Last year, China sold more EVs than the rest of the world. BYD, NIO, ORA, and Geely are some of the biggest Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers.
Even though China has been producing millions of EVs for years, American drivers wouldn&#8217;t be able to buy one. It&#8217;s because vehicles made in China are subjected to a %27.5 import tariff in the US. Due to heavy taxation, Chinese brands had not prioritized the US auto market in their global plans. But that&#8217;s changing quickly, as more and more Chinese EV marques are expanding their reach towards western markets, including United States.
In this article, we gathered a list of Chinese EV brands and their expansion plans. We will update this post when an announcement is made regarding any Chinese EV maker&#8217;s global expansion.

Leapmotor, an emerging EV brand backed by Dahua Technology, has plans to enter the European market in 2023. The brand officials confirmed that Leapmotor would open showrooms in Europe. To finance its globalization plans, Hangzhou-based carmaker filed its first IPO that worths around $1.5bn at Hong Kong Exchange.
The brand has already started to sell electric vehicles in Turkey and Israel, starting with the compact hatchback called <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/leapmotor-t03" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Leapmotor T03</a>. The first EV to be showcased in Europe will probably be the electric sedan C01. With its sleek design, cell-to-chassis technology, and impressive performance figures, <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/leapmotor-c01" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Leapmotor C01</a> will attract a lot of customers.

BYD first entered Norway with the full-size electric SUV called <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/2022-byd-tang-ev" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tang EV</a>. Over the next months, China&#8217;s biggest EV manufacturer will start selling vehicles all over the world. BYD EVs are already available in Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. European countries where BYD will start operations before the end of 2022 are the United Kingdom, Germany, Denmark, Netherlands, and Sweden.
BYD will export these three electric vehicle models to Old Continent; compact electric SUV <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/byd-atto-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BYD Atto 3</a>, electric sedan <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/2022-byd-han-ev" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BYD Han EV</a>, and BYD Tang EV. India, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam will also be subject to BYD&#8217;s global expansion, as official statements confirmed.
Unfortunately, BYD has no plans to enter the American market yet. But there is a possibility of Chinese EV maker using its new premium brand, which reportedly will deliver a $145K+ luxury EV to the market, to attract customers from United States.

NIO is one of the first Chinese automakers, which officially confirms its entry into the US market. NIO-branded EVs will be on sale in the US starting in 2025. Large-size SUV ES8 is currently being tested on US roads. There is no official timeline for the US launch, though.
Chinese EV marque will also start selling EVs in Germany, Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway. The next move on the global plans is to enter more European markets such as Austria, Belgium, France, Hungary, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Portugal, and the Czech Republic. NIO is hoping to sell electric vehicles in 25 countries by 2025.

In February 2022, Xpeng opened its first showroom in Stockholm, Sweden. Guangzhou-based company will start selling EVs in Denmark, Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden before the year ends. The company&#8217;s first offering will be the mid-range electric sedan <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/xpeng-p5-600p" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Xpeng P5</a>.
Xpeng expects half of its electric vehicle sales in 2025 to come from outside of China. Europe is its first choice but customers from the US will eventually get a taste of Xpeng&#8217;s popular cars in the near future. Chinese brand signed a dealership agreement with a Turkish company to sell EVs in Turkey as well. The first vehicle to be put on sale in Turkey will be <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/xpeng-p7-4wd-high-performance" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Xpeng P7</a>.

Geely is a global automotive group. There are brands under the Geely Group that sell vehicles all over the world. Zeekr will be joining those brands next year by entering the European market. EV-only brand will make it official in early 2023, as Zeekr announced.
Zeekr has only one model on sale called Zeekr 001, but it has plans to launch a total of seven EVs by 2025. Its 2025 sales goal in Europe is 100,000 vehicles. There is no word whether Zeekr will sell EVs in Scandinavia, western/or eastern Europe. Follow us for more details.

Great Wall Motors (GWM) has officially entered the United Kingdom and Germany with its EV-only brand ORA. GWM introduced the first vehicles to be put on sale in Europe earlier this year. <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/ora-cat-64-kwh" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ORA Cat/Funky Cat</a> is the first one for the western market.
The company appoints Emil Frey to distribute vehicles starting in Germany. That is not the first time GWM to choose Germany for its global expansion. Chinese automaker&#8217;s battery division SVOLT opened a battery plant in Germany as well. Recently SVOLT announced its second investment worth €2.0bn, which would enable them to produce lithium-ion battery cells directly in the country.

Li Auto is relatively late to the EV party, as their first choice of vehicle type is extended-range electric vehicles (EREV). BT The company will launch its first pure-electric model sometime next year. There are also plans for a possible production site in Europe.
Beijing-based automaker will be looking for partnerships to start selling EVs in Europe as soon as next year. No official info regarding which countries will get to buy Li Auto EREVs yet.

The Southern California cafe and Supercharger station that Tesla has long teased were depicted on one side of the presentation slide in what looks to be a fresh depiction. There was a Tesla Model S in a garage on the other side of the slide, next to a wireless charging pad. It&#8217;s also a crucial technological element for autonomous vehicles. It&#8217;s a more sophisticated solution than the earlier snake charger prototype Tesla demonstrated.

<h2>Not Just Tesla Has Been Highlighting Technology Lately</h2>
One of the top enterprises specializing in inductive EV charging for cars, WiTricity, will not say if the Tesla charging example is theirs or a licensed version of their technology. The Genesis GV60 in its native market of South Korea is the sole OEM industrial application for which it is the only firm outside of China to provide the technology. For demonstration considerations, the company has nonetheless equipped a Tesla Model 3 and a Ford Mustang Mach-E with wireless charging technology.
Stellantis&#8216; Ram truck line teased an inductive charging robot at CES in January. It would enable hands-free charging without reserving the same space every day. In 2025 or 2026, WiTricity forecasts a turning point in the market as more high-end. Eventually, mass-market vehicles will start to offer the technology as a feature or an option. But, if Tesla broadly uses the technology at that time, it may assist in drastically reducing the cost of entry for the technology.

The new clean vehicle tax credit, which came into effect in January 2023, is bringing down the cost of owning an electric vehicle. Before the IRA (Inflation Reduction Act), popular brands like Tesla and General Motors were not eligible because of the sales limit. Thanks to new legislation, some of the best EVs, such as the Tesla Model Y and Chevrolet Bolt now qualify for the tax credit. But electric vehicles assembled outside the US are now disqualified.
Normally, when an EV manufacturer sells 200,000 vehicles in the United States, the $7,500 federal tax credit halves to $3,750, and that process repeats a few times before being reduced to no credit. Tesla and General Motors already sold more than enough eligible EVs. So, there is no tax credit for these brands, right? Not quite. Let us explain.
With the Inflation Reduction Act, the 200,000 sales cap on tax credit is gone, and EVs from Tesla and General Motors are once again eligible for the tax credit. But there are now price caps for different kinds of vehicles. We try to sum up some of the new details of tax credit eligibility and created a list of vehicles eligible for the tax credit in the United States.
Update 2 (18th Feb, 2023): Genesis Electrified GV70 became the first Hyundai Group EV to earn tax credit eligibility. The luxury SUV is being produced at Korean carmaker&#8217;s Alabama plant.
Update 1: All Tesla Model Y variants, Ford Mustang Mach-E, VW ID.4, and Cadillac Lyriq are now eligible under the SUV MSRP cap $80,000, according to latest regulatory changes made by <a href="https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/manufacturers-and-models-for-new-qualified-clean-vehicles-purchased-in-2023-or-after">IRS</a> on February 3rd, 2023.

According to <a href="https://www.consumerreports.org/cars/hybrids-evs/electric-vehicles-that-qualify-for-new-ev-tax-credit-a9310530660/">Consumer Reports</a>, new tax credit rules will go into place in March 2023. This new bill will limit the credit value based on the vehicle&#8217;s battery origin, the origin of the battery materials, etc. And starting in 2024, the tax credit eligibility will be lost, if any materials of the battery are from &#8220;foreign entities of concern&#8221;, such as China and Russia. EV manufacturers are notifiying customers to finalize their order before the new rules take effect.
<h3>Do Leased Electric Vehicles Qualify for Tax Credit?</h3>
The EV tax credit requirements will get stricter each year through 2026. By the time all rules go into effect, a large portion of electric vehicles will lose their eligibility. But there is an alternative to purchasing an EV to benefit from clean vehicle incentives.
If an electric vehicle is leased, most of the requirements for purchasing a vehicle may not apply. For instance, you could lease an EV made outside the US and still get a tax credit. The credit will be received by the dealer, not the person leasing the vehicle, but it is up to your leaser to pass the saving on to your payments.
Thanks to new rules, expensive electric vehicles like Lucid Air, and Tesla Model S may also benefit from tax credit if a customer chooses to lease instead of purchase.

In the US, the federal government provides various incentives for conversion to electric vehicles. The City of New York is also taking advantage of these incentives and incorporating a large-scale fleet. The New York City Council announced it will spend $10.1 million to purchase 925 electric vehicles. The fund will cover electric garbage trucks to street sweepers, and build 315 new EV chargers. The US Department of Transportation provides $10.1 million in federal grant funding to the City of New York. The fund will be used to purchase 382 <a href="https://www.licarco.com/2022-chevrolet-bolt-ev">Chevrolet Bolts</a>, 360 <a href="https://www.licarco.com/ford-e-transit">Ford E-Transit</a> vans, and 150 Ford <a href="https://www.licarco.com/ford-f-150-lightning-pro-standard-range">F-150 Lightning</a> pickup trucks.
The administration is also purchasing 25 plug-in hybrid street sweepers for the New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) and 7 Mack LR BEV garbage trucks with two 130 kW engines producing a total of 496 peak horsepower. After a successful pilot implementation, these will be the first electric garbage trucks owned by DSNY. This first order of electric pickup trucks and vans brings the agency closer to its goal of an all-electric light and medium-duty fleet by 2035.
Federal funds will also support the DCAS&#8217;s first major investment in all-electric pickup trucks. By September 2022 – three years ahead of schedule – DCAS has reached its goal of electrifying 4,000 vehicles in its city fleet. Currently, the electric fleet includes a variety of vehicle types and categories, from more than 200 Ford Mustang Mach Es to nearly 850 Chevy Bolts, most of which serve law enforcement.

DCAS also operates the largest EV charging network in New York State. The total number of charging units consist of more than 1,300 for fleet vehicles. DCAS will build 600 more charging units in the next 18 months. This fund will also support the purchase of 315 additional charging units.

New York City Buys 925 EVs for Cleaning

Li Ke, Executive Vice President of BYD has revealed the automaker&#8217;s ambitions to build not one, but perhaps two seperate EV plants in Europe. These claims came a few months after the brand&#8217;s expansion into Europe and Japan began. The executive was very open about BYD&#8217;s future, its similarities to Tesla, and its plans to grow internationally. She stated that BYD intends to develop an electric car manufacturing base in Europe and that the company is doing due diligence on the project.
<h2>BYD&#8217;s European Expansion Will Include Domestic EV Manufacturing</h2>
According to Bloomberg, by establishing plants in Europe, BYD would be able to both satisfy the expanding demand and escaping the hefty import taxes levied by the EU, which, like the US, wants to shift manufacturing away from China. This would increase the affordability of its automobiles. It will eventually enable the company to expand its market share within the designated area.
This Chinese automaker already operates plants in a number of nations, including three in Brazil and one in Canada, among others. Chinese market, the largest EV industry, is where it is most prevalent. In November 2022, it sold more EVs in China than Tesla, and it currently ranks second worldwide in terms of total EV sales, after Tesla. China-based BYD Planning to Build up to Two EV Factories in Europe

EPA published a list of electric cars that scored the highest MPGe, which is the MPG equivalent of the EV world. Hyundai IONIQ 6 is the most efficient electric car, according to EPA. Electric sedan&#8217;s RWD Long Range version scored a 140 MPGe. The second most efficient model is the 2022&#8217;s champion, Tesla Model 3. Lucid Air Grand Touring costs $154,000 in US. It is three times expensive than the more efficient Model 3. But Air offers a luxurious interior, smooth driving experience, and much higher performance.

Mid-size electric SUV comes with the standard battery pack with 2170 cells. AWD version features a structural battery pack, which is filled with larger 4680 cells. Tesla will use LFP batteries inside entry-level models, while higher trim levels will get the structural pack with Tesla&#8217;s special battery units.

Daimler Trucks has opened the eTruck Charging Park in partnership with Netze BW, a subsidiary of EnBW.  The charging station is in Wörth, Germany and this is the place where the German company manufactures the all-electric eActros and eEconic trucks.
The charging station for e-trucks is equipped with a total of six different charging units from the companies Siemens, ABB, Ekoenergetyka, and Alpitronic, with outputs between 40 kW and 300 kW on an area of around 2,000 square meters.
Daimler Trucks claims that the customers will have an opportunity to experience the efficiency, range, and charging characteristics of the electric trucks. Also, this will allow customers to develop a complete electric solution for their personal needs with the assistance of the experts on site. The park is also equipped with a photovoltaic system on the roof and an energy storage system. As a “proof of concept”, it is intended to demonstrate possibilities for an efficient power supply for the charging columns.

Michael Scheib, Head of Product Management at Mercedes-Benz Truck states that the main goal of the company is to offer our customers more than just an electric truck in the transformation to e-mobility.  He also says that the German manufacturer intends to provide an integrated solution that includes consulting and charging infrastructure solutions from a single source. “Our charging park for customers in Wörth is an integral part of this approach and shows customers, practically and tangibly, what charging infrastructure for their application can look like,” Scheib adds.
Axel Hausen, Head of eMob Major Projects, Marketing &amp; Special Projects at Netze BW’s Services Division, says: “Besides the technological development of all the necessary components, the development of the electric charging infrastructure is one of the factors crucial to the success of electric heavy-duty transport. Together with our parent company, EnBW, we are contributing a lot of expertise in charging infrastructure and the energy industry to the project. In Wörth, we are working with investors such as e-fleet operators, truck manufacturers, industrial and commercial customers, and municipalities to develop individual charging solutions, especially for depot logistics, that will help electric heavy-duty transport take off.”
Overall, opening a charging park seems to be a different approach to familiarizing potential customers with electric trucks and their specific needs. If this can help convince fleets to switch to EVs, we might see other manufacturers also building similar stations like this.

Since the battery pack is the most expensive part of an electric vehicle, battery lifetime is a very important parameter for customers who are looking to buy an EV. In this article, we would like to answer some frequently asked questions regarding EV batteries, electric car battery lifetime, battery replacement costs, and repairability.
<h2>How Long Does An Electric Car Battery Last?</h2>

Lithium-ion batteries tend to lose their energy capacity over time. That is mostly due to extended usage. According to a study published by Cox Automotive, average car buyers assume that an electric vehicle battery only lasts around 100,000 kilometers (65,000 miles). Although electric car batteries are prone to losing their charge capacity, like every other energy storage solution, these batteries use state-of-the-art anode/cathode chemistries that allow them to last at least 10 years, sometimes even up to 20 years. Customers shouldn&#8217;t worry about wearing their battery any time soon.
Batteries will eventually start to degrade and lose charging capacity over time. The average loss of battery capacity is around 1.5 to 2.5 percent per year. According to Plug In America, the luxury sedan Tesla Model S’s battery only loses 5 percent of its original battery capacity over the first 80,000 km (50,000 miles).
Most manufacturers, including Nissan, Tesla, and Toyota, offer an eight-year (or 160,000 km/100,000 miles) warranty on their electric car batteries. Some automakers, such as Hyundai, provide lifetime coverage for their EV batteries. BMW, Chevrolet, Tesla, Volkswagen, and Nissan will also cover a battery pack replacement if its capacity drops to a certain percentage (70% in most cases). If the car has less than 70% of its original capacity before the end of the eighth year, the warranty will cover all battery replacement costs.
<h3>Electric Car Battery vs Smartphone Battery</h3>
Smartphones have no thermal management for the battery, and fast charging will result in a hot battery. In hot temperatures, battery reactions will speed up and degrade the battery quicker. That’s why smartphone batteries rarely last more than two years.
Electric cars, on the other hand, have advanced thermal management systems, which help the battery pack to optimize its efficiency and eliminate harmful effects of cold/hot temperatures caused by weather, heavy usage/lack of usage, etc.

According to <a href="https://about.bnef.com/blog/battery-pack-prices-fall-to-an-average-of-132-kwh-but-rising-commodity-prices-start-to-bite/">Bloomberg NEF</a>, the average price of lithium-ion batteries dropped from $1,160 per kWh in 2010 to $132 in 2021. Thanks to lower prices, electric car battery replacement costs are also dropping sharply. In order to decrease battery repair bills, automakers are also adopting the remanufactured battery pack strategy, similar to Tesla&#8217;s lower-cost replacement packs with refurbished battery modules.
There is sufficient data on the internet that tells us how much does a Tesla battery cost. According to <a href="https://www.findmyelectric.com/blog/tesla-battery-replacement-cost-explained/">FindmyElectric.com</a>, Tesla Model S full battery replacement should cost between $13,000 to $20,000. A full battery replacement of the premium electric SUV Model X would be around $14,000-$21,000. Tesla&#8217;s mid-size EVs, namely Model 3 and Model Y, are cheaper to repair. The battery pack replacement of these models costs $11,000-$16,000 including labor, miscellaneous parts. The exact replacement cost varies depending on the condition of the battery pack.
Not all EV manufacturers use remanufactured packs to make battery replacement more affordable. Ford, for example, asks more than $43,000 for a brand-new Mustang Mach-E battery pack in Canada. But Ford dealers in the US will charge you around $18,000 to $24,000 for a Mach-E replacement.
<h3>Does Electric Car Battery Disposal Cause Pollution?</h3>
Electric vehicles technically don’t produce any exhaust emissions like carbon monoxide (CO) and NOx. These types of vehicles are definitely cleaner than ICE vehicles. But that doesn’t mean EVs don’t have any carbon footprint. Electric cars use electricity to charge up and a high portion of the electricity generation causes heavy pollution.
EVs are also indirectly polluting the environment with their battery packs. The production and disposal of lithium-ion batteries definitely cause pollution. Of course, batteries and electric vehicles are getting cleaner every day, thanks to stricter rules implemented by governments that encourage manufacturers to act more environment-friendly, and promising developments in the lithium-ion battery recycling industry.
When electric car batteries reach the end of their life, they can be recycled for valuable materials including lithium, nickel, manganese, cobalt, and graphite, which means electric car battery disposal can decrease EV&#8217;s carbon footprint.
Tesla already recycles batteries from its vehicles. Volkswagen’s pilot recycling plant for used EV batteries has also begun operations. Elon Musk expects the auto industry to have enough battery materials inside the existing EV fleet in the next 30-40 years, eliminating the need for mining new materials. The first European lithium-ion battery cell manufacturer Northvolt produced its first cell made “100 percent from recycled nickel, manganese, and cobalt”. But approximately half of the materials in an EV battery pack are recycled. There is still a very long way to go in the battery recycling business.

<h3>Is It Possible to Repair/Recondition An Electric Car Battery?</h3>
When auto services accept an electric car with the inspection of battery failure, first they run a routine diagnosis and determine how much of the original energy storage capacity the battery can still provide. If there are broken battery modules, and the total capacity degraded to a level lower than 70 percent, the electric car battery will most likely be replaced with a new unit.
The electric car services usually don&#8217;t just swap bad modules for good ones, instead, they replace the entire battery with a brand new or remanufactured one. After a new battery pack is installed, the broken/old one is sent back to factories where broken modules will be replaced with good ones, and any other battery pack problems are solved.
Tesla has been using a similar approach to fix battery packs. Ideally for Tesla, all replacement batteries are remanufactured.
