<a href="https://www.licarco.com/cars">Electric vehicles</a> are getting really popular, but the main concerns, such as short range and long charging times that hold conventional vehicle owners back from switching sides are still yet to be solved. When you plug your 400V vehicle into a DC charger, you limit your session to 400-volt. To provide faster charging speeds, EV charger should deliver more current, sometimes as high as 600A or even more (The third-gen Tesla Superchargers can deliver up to 660-amper). In order to increase the current, thicker and water-cooled cables are needed. Even using these expensive cables are not enough to lower down the charge efficiency, as conduction losses will increase up to nine times.
EV manufacturers have been developing 800V charging technologies to overcome this fast-charging problem. Some companies such as Porsche/Audi, Lucid Motors, and Xpeng use SiC inverters inside their EVs. These next-gen SiC inverters can handle higher voltages and also improve efficiency. Hyundai and Kia took a different approach to this matter. Korean automakers developed a technology that manages to provide 800-volt charging by using electric motors as generator and a regular IGBT inverter.
Thanks to more advanced electronics, 800-volt charging enables vehicle owners to reach up to 480 kW DC charging rates. For instance, Xpeng G9 and Aion LX Plus are already on sale that support ultra-fast 480+ kW charging. Lucid Air can go as high as 300 kW. Porsche Taycan did perform similiarly. Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 is also capable of delivering up to 240 kW DC charging speeds. 800V charging is definitely the future of EVs!
<h3>More Efficient &amp; More Powerful Electric Drivetrains</h3>

By switching to a 800V architecture, EV manufacturers can make use of higher voltage motors as well. Porsche is the first company to implement an 800V electric motor into its vehicles. Higher voltage improves overall power density of the motor unit and it reduces the maximum torque required to achieve the same output power due to extended RPM range.
As the DC link voltage of the EV motor units increase, the current levels decrease. This leads to lower copper loss and improves efficiency of the electrical traction systems. Higher voltage motors are also tend to produce more power than lower voltage solutions.
From the efficiency perspective, the next-gen SiC inverters used inside 800V electric vehicles are also much more efficient. <a href="https://www.licarco.com/byd-yangwang-u8">BYD recently unveiled</a> its first SiC inverter developed in-house, which scores an efficiency level of 99.5 percent.

800-volt electrical architectures can be created by using thinner cables between the battery pack and the inverter, DC charging port, OBC, and other equipments. As a result, 800V electric vehicles will use less copper and that would reduce the overall weight of the car.
Higher voltage electric motors are also significantly lighter and more power-dense than regular lower voltage units. That means 800V electric vehicles can be equipped with smaller, lighter motors. That creates more room for batteries as well.
<h3>Reduced Cost of Cabling, Less Copper Used Inside the Vehicle</h3>
Electric vehicles use more copper than any other vehicles. It takes 2 to 4 times more copper to build an EV than an ICE vehicle. But unlike 400V EVs, higher voltage systems don&#8217;t require thick copper cables. That will not only help manufacturers reduce the cost of cabling but also ease up the global copper supply chain. Because EV batteries and heavy investments in EV charging infrastructure have already been causing problems for the copper industry, thinner cables will help in the near future.
Here are some disadvantages of choosing 800V electrical system over a regular 400V architecture:
&#8211; Higher cost of electrical insulation and clearance
&#8211; Higher voltage battery packs tend to perform less reliable than 400V systems, because they contain larger number of series connections. The impact of single cell failure in a pack like this would be much higher than the 400V batteries with more parallel cells.
&#8211; Lower voltage battery packs are more energy-dense than the similiarly designed 800V batteries, which is the result of all the additional electrical clearance requirements around high voltage systems and the much larger BMS.

BIG&#8217;s first product, the R30, features a dual-engine and liquid-cooled 221 kWh battery pack that delivers a total of 800 horsepower (600 kW). He Xiaopeng, the founder of the Xpeng, unveiled another of their products called Xpeng S4. Xpeng G9: The World’s Fastest-Charging Mass Production EV Unveiled

Chinese-American battery manufacturer Farasis announced its new strategy and a new high-nickel battery product at a press event in Beijing. The next-gen lithium-ion battery is called SPS, or &#8220;Super Pouch Solution&#8221;. As the name suggests, Farasis is switching to CTP (Cell-to-Pack) battery design with bigger pouch cells. This new design will allow EVs using the latest cells from Farasis to travel up to 400 kilometers with 10 minutes of charging. Super Pouch will also support the direct-recycling process developed by the battery maker.

Thanks to the bigger, thicker pouch-cell form factor, Super Pouch batteries will reach a gravimetric pack-level energy density of 330 Wh/kg. Farasis confirmed that its new NMC cell will support 800V electrical architecture, up to 4C discharge rates, and 300-350 kW DC charging speeds that will allow 400 kilometers of range with a 10-minute charging session.
The module-less battery pack will include a two-sided liquid cooling system and heat dissipation plates on three sides of every pouch cell. Advanced thermal management system will not only quadruple heat dissipation efficiency but also extend battery life to more than 3,000 cycles.
Horizontally placed big pouch cells will allow Farasis to decrease the number of battery parts by 50%, reduce material costs by up to 33%, and increase volume utilization to 75%. The compact battery pack will be able to hold off more than 90 percent of its energy capacity in extreme cold weather conditions (-20 Celcius).

Currently, Farasis only offers high-nickel NMC811 and NMC622 pouch cells. With the new strategy, Chinese company will add some competitive options to its product portfolio, such as LFP, high-manganese NMC, and low-cost sodium-ion battery cells.
Thanks to a much improved semi-solid electrolyte and silicone anode, Farasis will be able to produce NMC cells with 300 to 400 Wh/kg energy density. After switching to a fully solid-state electrolyte in 2028, energy density levels will reach as far as 500 Wh/kilogram, which will hopefully be enough to be used in the aviation industry.
Next year, Farasis is getting into the LFP wagon as well. They will not only produce lithium-iron-phosphate batteries but also offer more energy-dense LMFP (Lithium manganese-iron-phosphate) cells. The energy density level will vary between 200 to 240 Wh/kg. These will not be the cheapest option Farasis will provide. Sodium-ion battery production is also due in 2023 with an energy density of 160 Wh/kg. Farasis predicts that its sodium-ion cells will be best for energy storage applications and entry-level EVs. Energy density-wise, these cells will go as high as 230 Wh/kg by 2030.
<h2>Battery Plants Will Cost Less, Thanks to Improved Battery Tech</h2>

Improved battery chemistry and much higher energy density will allow Farasis to cut manufacturing equipment costs by 50 percent. Super Pouch-producing factories will also require 60% less space for the same amount of battery production output.
Farasis also said that new battery plants will consume 35% less energy and lower production costs by 30%. Chinese company has agreed to open a battery plant in Turkey with domestic EV brand <a href="https://www.licarco.com/togg-c-suv">Togg</a>. This new plant will definitely produce next-gen pouch cells from Farasis starting in 2025. <a href="https://www.licarco.com/zeekr-001-single-motor-we">Geely</a> also established a joint venture with Farasis to construct multiple battery cell production sites and co-develop future battery technologies. Both of these partners will make use of Super Pouch&#8217;s cost-cutting, energy-dense design.

Mercedes-Benz EQG debuted last year at the Munich Mobility Show. According to Autocar, fully electric G Wagon will use a silicone-anode battery for boosting its range and performance. It will be the first Mercedes to feature a battery that uses a high-silicone anode. EQG will not only offer more range but also weigh much lighter and perform better.
Mercedes and Sila Nanotechnologies collaborated to develop high-silicone batteries in 2019. This year in May, two companies signed a supply agreement for future Mercedes EVs. The new battery cell with silicone anode can achieve a volumetric energy density of 800 Wh/l, according to Sila Nanotechnologies. German carmaker first used the new battery inside its astonishing EV concept called <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/mercedes-vision-eqxx/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Vision EQXX</a>. This concept can offer more than 1,000 kilometers of range, thanks to a 100-kWh battery pack that weighs only 495 kilograms and occupies less space inside the vehicle&#8217;s body.
Lithium-ion battery cells mostly use natural/or synthetic graphite as the main material for the anode. China is the dominant supplier of both kinds of graphite. To decrease their dependency on China, western companies have been looking for an alternative. Silicone is the most viable option, as it can store significantly more lithium ions than graphite could. Fully electric EQG will not only feature an energy-dense battery but also an advanced powertrain. Electric G Wagon will have four electric motors, two on the front and the other two on the rear axle. Mercedes is also going to include its most advanced software package that imitates the functionality of the gasoline-engined G Wagon&#8217;s three differential locks.
German carmaker is also looking for an opportunity to implement its newly-acquired British motor company YASA&#8217;s axial flux motors. These compact solutions can produce more torque and weigh less for boosting both range and performance, like the new battery. YASA supplied axial flux motors to Ferrari&#8217;s SF90 Stradale and Koenigsegg&#8217;s Regera. EQG could use the extra torque for an improved off-road experience. Unfortunately, G Wagon fans will have to wait for a couple of years to buy this fascinating piece of technology. Mercedes-Benz is planning to start building the first electric G-Class vehicle in 2025.

Solid Power’s plan to produce solid-state lithium-ion batteries goes back to 2017. It was reported that BMW and Solid Power set up a partnership to develop batteries without semi-liquid electrolytes. Since then, Ford has joined up as a significant investor in Solid Power.
Solid Power has been founded in 2012 and they are producing solid-state batteries with a sulfur-based electrolyte and an anode with higher silicon (more than %50) in it.

The Colorado-based company has finished a manufacturing line for its solid-state batteries that will allow producing 15.000 battery cells a year. That number might seem too few, however, Solid Power will deliver them to BMW and Ford for testing in their battery electric vehicles. After the tests are done, the company will increase the production volume.
<h2>Solid Power is ahead of its rivals</h2>
Solid Power has advantages against its rivals with its technology. The company’s batteries have higher density, more range, and shorter charging time compared to conventional ones. Furthermore, they are more convenient than other solid-state batteries because these batteries can be produced in any battery plant without any further upgrades.

Solid Power CEO Doug Campell tells that “The installation of this EV cell pilot line will allow us to produce EV-scale cells suitable for initiating the formal automotive qualification process. Over the coming quarters, we will work to bring the EV cell pilot line up to its full operational capability and look forward to delivering EV-scale all-solid-state cells to our partners later this year.”
By the end of this year, the Colorado-based battery manufacturer plans to deliver to its partners, BMW and Ford, for testing in their prototypes. This will be a major step in the validation process for the solid-state batteries to be sold to other car manufacturers on a larger scale.
The company expects to bring other automakers to join Solid Power’s battery design in the first six months of 2024, which means that we can see the first vehicles with solid-state batteries in two years.

Solid Power to Start Production of Solid-State Batteries

One of the biggest challenges of the EV industry is to provide longer ranges with a single charge. That’s why companies try to develop batteries that can be charged as fast as possible.
Polestar has officially announced that it will make its first financial investment in Israeli battery technology innovator, StoreDot.
StoreDot is the pioneer in manufacturing extreme fast charging (XFC) batteries that will overcome the range and charging anxiety of the EV industry. StoreDot&#8217;s strategic investors and partners include Daimler, BP, VinFast, Volvo, Ola Electric, Samsung, TDK, and the manufacturing partner EVE Energy.
<h2>Revolutionizing the battery architecture</h2>
Polestar CEO, Thomas Ingelath says that “Charging and range anxiety are common concerns holding owners of combustion engine cars back from making the switch to EVs. Store Dot’s advanced battery technology potentially provides real solutions to these obstacles.”
The company has revolutionized the conventional Li-ion battery and has been using two different techniques to produce XFC batteries.
The first technique of StoreDot is to replace the conventional graphite in the battery’s anode with silicon nanoparticles, synthesized together with proprietary small-molecule organic compounds. The Israeli company says that this mix overcomes the inherent challenges of the silicon such as its expansion during the charging cycles and the subsequent energy loss.
Secondly, the battery manufacturer company developed a hybrid-solid electrolyte, which creates a low-resistance flow of ions between the battery’s electrodes, increasing energy density.

Through its ‘100inX’ product roadmap, StoreDot is confident that its batteries will deliver 160 km/100 miles of charge in five minutes by 2024, three minutes by 2028, and just two minutes by 2032. In other words, this will be the same time it takes to refuel a conventional combustion engine car.
With this partnership, StoreDot will adapt and apply its technology to the prototypes of Polestar’s EVs. If this pilot program becomes successful, the company will put its fast-charging batteries into Polestars by 2026.

Once millions and millions of EVs hit the road, charging them at public charging stations will be difficult. Increasing the number of charging stations is only one part of the solution. Another part is to reduce recharge time while continuing to increase range, and silicon may fit the bill.
<h2 style="text-align: left;">The Silicon Advantage</h2>
Since the Energy Department&#8217;s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is one of those working to promote the silicon-lithium advancement, let everything reveal the benefits.
<ul>
<li>Silicon has long been appealing for use as a substance in lithium-ion battery anodes as its generating capacity is up to ten times that of the widely used material, graphite, resulting in lithium-ion batteries with 20 to 40% higher energy density.</li>
<li>Throughout the charging process, as lithium ions crowd in, silicon anodes expand nearly 300 percent. While the battery discharges, the lithium ions leave, leaving the silicon anode to shrivel back to its original form.</li>
</ul>
The anode ultimately cracks and disintegrates as a result of the stress, reducing the life of the battery. Previous iterations of new silicon-lithium technology were able to work around the issue, but the cost became an impediment. Several of the suggested silicon anodes that hope to withstand lithium movement will necessitate costly starting materials and complex synthesis processes requiring special tools, making them difficult to generate at commercially relevant scales and costs.
<h2 style="text-align: left;">The Better Way Of Group14 Solution</h2>
