Chinese electric vehicle brands are a top priority at Licarco because the EV market has become increasingly dominated by pure electric Chinese cars. Last year, China sold more EVs than the rest of the world. BYD, NIO, ORA, and Geely are some of the biggest Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers.
Even though China has been producing millions of EVs for years, American drivers wouldn&#8217;t be able to buy one. It&#8217;s because vehicles made in China are subjected to a %27.5 import tariff in the US. Due to heavy taxation, Chinese brands had not prioritized the US auto market in their global plans. But that&#8217;s changing quickly, as more and more Chinese EV marques are expanding their reach towards western markets, including United States.
In this article, we gathered a list of Chinese EV brands and their expansion plans. We will update this post when an announcement is made regarding any Chinese EV maker&#8217;s global expansion.

Leapmotor, an emerging EV brand backed by Dahua Technology, has plans to enter the European market in 2023. The brand officials confirmed that Leapmotor would open showrooms in Europe. To finance its globalization plans, Hangzhou-based carmaker filed its first IPO that worths around $1.5bn at Hong Kong Exchange.
The brand has already started to sell electric vehicles in Turkey and Israel, starting with the compact hatchback called <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/leapmotor-t03" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Leapmotor T03</a>. The first EV to be showcased in Europe will probably be the electric sedan C01. With its sleek design, cell-to-chassis technology, and impressive performance figures, <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/leapmotor-c01" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Leapmotor C01</a> will attract a lot of customers.

BYD first entered Norway with the full-size electric SUV called <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/2022-byd-tang-ev" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tang EV</a>. Over the next months, China&#8217;s biggest EV manufacturer will start selling vehicles all over the world. BYD EVs are already available in Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. European countries where BYD will start operations before the end of 2022 are the United Kingdom, Germany, Denmark, Netherlands, and Sweden.
BYD will export these three electric vehicle models to Old Continent; compact electric SUV <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/byd-atto-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BYD Atto 3</a>, electric sedan <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/2022-byd-han-ev" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BYD Han EV</a>, and BYD Tang EV. India, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam will also be subject to BYD&#8217;s global expansion, as official statements confirmed.
Unfortunately, BYD has no plans to enter the American market yet. But there is a possibility of Chinese EV maker using its new premium brand, which reportedly will deliver a $145K+ luxury EV to the market, to attract customers from United States.
<h2>NIO</h2>

NIO is one of the first Chinese automakers, which officially confirms its entry into the US market. NIO-branded EVs will be on sale in the US starting in 2025. Large-size SUV ES8 is currently being tested on US roads. There is no official timeline for the US launch, though.
Chinese EV marque will also start selling EVs in Germany, Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway. The next move on the global plans is to enter more European markets such as Austria, Belgium, France, Hungary, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Portugal, and the Czech Republic. NIO is hoping to sell electric vehicles in 25 countries by 2025.
<h2>Xpeng</h2>

In February 2022, Xpeng opened its first showroom in Stockholm, Sweden. Guangzhou-based company will start selling EVs in Denmark, Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden before the year ends. The company&#8217;s first offering will be the mid-range electric sedan <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/xpeng-p5-600p" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Xpeng P5</a>.
Xpeng expects half of its electric vehicle sales in 2025 to come from outside of China. Europe is its first choice but customers from the US will eventually get a taste of Xpeng&#8217;s popular cars in the near future. Chinese brand signed a dealership agreement with a Turkish company to sell EVs in Turkey as well. The first vehicle to be put on sale in Turkey will be <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/xpeng-p7-4wd-high-performance" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Xpeng P7</a>.
<h2>Zeekr</h2>

Geely is a global automotive group. There are brands under the Geely Group that sell vehicles all over the world. Zeekr will be joining those brands next year by entering the European market. EV-only brand will make it official in early 2023, as Zeekr announced.
Zeekr has only one model on sale called Zeekr 001, but it has plans to launch a total of seven EVs by 2025. Its 2025 sales goal in Europe is 100,000 vehicles. There is no word whether Zeekr will sell EVs in Scandinavia, western/or eastern Europe. Follow us for more details.

Great Wall Motors (GWM) has officially entered the United Kingdom and Germany with its EV-only brand ORA. GWM introduced the first vehicles to be put on sale in Europe earlier this year. <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/ora-cat-64-kwh" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ORA Cat/Funky Cat</a> is the first one for the western market.
The company appoints Emil Frey to distribute vehicles starting in Germany. That is not the first time GWM to choose Germany for its global expansion. Chinese automaker&#8217;s battery division SVOLT opened a battery plant in Germany as well. Recently SVOLT announced its second investment worth €2.0bn, which would enable them to produce lithium-ion battery cells directly in the country.

Li Auto is relatively late to the EV party, as their first choice of vehicle type is extended-range electric vehicles (EREV). BT The company will launch its first pure-electric model sometime next year. There are also plans for a possible production site in Europe.
Beijing-based automaker will be looking for partnerships to start selling EVs in Europe as soon as next year. No official info regarding which countries will get to buy Li Auto EREVs yet.

Leapmotor T03 is a small-size electric hatchback first hit the market in May 2020. It is the second EV that Dahua-backed EV start-up built and launched. T03 comes with a 41-kWh battery pack, which is enough to give this small EV a range of 403 kilometers, according to <a href="https://www.licarco.com/news/ev-range-tests-explained-comparison-between-epa-ratings-wltp-nedc-and-cltc">CLTC test cycle</a>.
Chinese company recently announced that Leapmotor T03 has passed the European Union&#8217;s Whole Vehicle Type Approval and it is ready to be sold in EU. Leapmotor also officially confirmed its entry into the Israeli market with the very same model. First batch of T03 are on their way to Israel. The official pricing of the electric hatchback will be announced by Leapmotor&#8217;s partner in Israel called Metro Motor.

In this article, we will try to explain some of the best battery pack design approaches that not only improve the energy efficiency of electric vehicles but also dramatically ease their production process.
<h2>What is Tesla&#8217;s Structural Battery Pack? Advantages, Disadvantages</h2>
Tesla first mentioned its next-gen battery design called &#8220;Structural Battery Pack&#8221; at the Battery Day event in September 2020. The structural battery pack is a kind of electric vehicle battery that is cleverly designed to efficiently fit into the car. It is part of the vehicle&#8217;s chassis, as the battery pack acts as a structural part of the whole car. Seats are directly mounted to the battery pack itself.

The structural battery not only stores energy but also provides structure. It is significantly lighter when a traditional pack and the weight of other necessary parts provide rigidity combined. Thanks to Tesla&#8217;s new 4680 lithium-ion battery cells, there is no excess steel construction inside the structural battery pack. The new chunky cells provide enough rigidity to the vehicle body that the vehicle no longer needs additional parts to carry the load.
One of the most popular disadvantages of the structural pack is that a vehicle with a structural battery pack will most likely be totaled when got into an accident because the battery will be unreplaceable. A recent report shows that it is not true. A structural pack can be disassembled and can even be replaced, as Tesla&#8217;s service manual confirms.
There is only one vehicle that uses a structural battery pack. It is the Texas-made 2022 Tesla Model Y. Giga Berlin will also start producing electric vehicles with structural packs in the coming months. Tesla will improve its existing EVs such as Model 3 and Model S/X with the new pack in the near future. All of Tesla&#8217;s new models will also get the latest structural battery pack treatment.

<h3>What are CTP, CTC, and CTB? Next-gen Chinese Battery Packs Explained</h3>
Chinese EV-makers divide battery pack designs into three major generations. First-gen batteries used a more conventional approach called Cell-to-Module. Individual cells were packaged together inside battery modules, and modules made up the assembly-ready battery pack. This method requires more parts, as a result, structural elements end up increasing the overall cost and weight of the vehicle.

Second-gen batteries are widely known as CTP (Cell-to-Pack), or module-free design. It was first unveiled by two Chinese lithium-ion battery makers CATL and BYD in 2019 and 2020, respectively. The new design approach eliminates the need for battery modules and enables manufacturers to directly put battery cells into the battery pack itself. It reduces the battery pack&#8217;s weight and also improves both the volumetric and gravimetric energy density of the battery.
The evolution of the battery packs did not stop with the elimination of the battery modules. In 2022, two Chinese EV manufacturer, Leapmotor and BYD unveiled their 3rd-generation battery packs called CTC (Cell-to-Chassis) and CTB (Cell-to-Body), respectively. Thanks to new advancements in the field of electric vehicle platforms, automakers can now pack battery cells directly into the vehicle body/chassis itself. There won&#8217;t be any separate battery packs inside <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/news/best-chinese-ev-manufacturers" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chinese EVs</a> soon.

According to Leapmotor, its third-gen battery design will cut the number of parts needed for the battery assembly by 20 percent. It will also reduce the cost of structural parts by 15 percent, and increase the space available for battery cells inside the vehicle by 14.5 percent.
BYD says its new Cell-to-Body battery design approach will dramatically improve its next-gen electric vehicles&#8217; weight distribution and security. CTB/CTC will eventually become the pioneering examples of the new cost-saving, weight-reducing battery designs.

What is Structural Battery, CTC/CTB? EV Battery Packs Explained

Kentucky Governor recently announced that Envision AESC, a world-leading Japanese EV battery technology company, will have an investment of $2 billion in Bowling Green, Kentucky, to construct a 30 GWh gigafactory. The project, which can reach up to 40 GWh, will have enough batteries to power 300,000 EVs from various automakers each year.
<h2>2,000 New Job Opportunities</h2>
The project is expected to generate 2,000 new jobs in the state and establish the region as a national leader in battery manufacturing.
The CEO of Envision AESC Group, Shoichi Matsumoto, said:
“We are pleased to partner with Kentucky and Bowling Green as part of our next phase battery strategy to power next-generation EVs in the U.S. This major investment builds on our commitment to the U.S. market, supports the growth of the electrification supply chain, and secures high-value jobs for future generations in the region. This commitment takes us one step further toward our ambition to make high-performance, longer-range batteries for a diverse range of automotive manufacturers worldwide to support the EV transition.”
The energy density of the new-gen battery cells will be 30% higher than that of the latest generation.

Furthermore, the gigafactory will be driven by 100 % renewable electricity generated on-site and acquired from the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA).
TVA President and CEO Jeff Lyash said:

The plant, which will be approximately 3 million square feet in size, will be one of the largest economic projects in the state&#8217;s history.

Kentucky Poised To Turn Out The Nation’s Leading Producer Of Electric Vehicle Batteries

In the 2022 CEO Investor Forum, Hyundai Motor Group has laid out the electrification strategy for the next decade. The company will produce 17 new BEV models and invest $80 billion in hardware and software technologies with this strategy. This shows that Hyundai is committed to increasing its share up to 7% in the global EV market by 2030.
In the recent press release, Jaehoon Chang, the CEO, shared its updated plan and the steps of its strategy during the virtual 2022 CEO Investor Day. Hyundai Motor Company aims to sell 1.87 million BEVs each year till 2030 and plans to build a new BEV production facility to increase the production capacity. Korean Company will also develop technologies for the next-generation batteries to maximize efficiency. Another step of the new strategy will be the introduction of an Integrated Modular Architecture (IMA) in 2025.
The company will invest almost $80 million in new technologies to pursue sustainability and to increase competitiveness in connectivity and autonomous driving.
<h3 style="font-size: 1.5em;">17 New BEV models of Hyundai and Genesis</h3>
The Korean carmaker will launch eleven Hyundai and six Genesis BEV models in the next decade. New Hyundai BEVs will be three sedan models, six SUVs, one light commercial vehicle, and one “new type model”. Ioniq 6 will be on market in 2022 and Ioniq 7 in 2024.
The luxury brand of Hyundai Motor, Genesis, is set to become all-electric in 2022 and will launch two-seated EVs and four SUVs, including the Electric GV70.

The most exciting announcement during the 2022 CEO Investor Forum is the new modular platform which will debut in 2025. The new Integrated Modular Architecture (IMA) will be the evolved version of the electric global platform (E-GMP), which will be on the market with Hyundai vehicles like the <a href="https://www.licarco.com/hyundai-ioniq-5-long-range-awd/">Ioniq 5</a>, <a href="https://www.licarco.com/kia-ev6-gt/">Kia EV6</a>, and <a href="https://www.licarco.com/genesis-gv60-performance/">Genesis GV60</a>.
The Korean carmaker elaborated that the IMA will be developed to standardize the chassis, battery system, and motor. Its innovative architecture will improve the driving range and be used for BEVs in all segments.
The existing BEV development system of the company has different types of battery packs for each model; however, the IMA will allow equipping standardized battery packs and motors for all models, which increases cost-efficiency.  Its cell-to-pack system will allow this new architecture to be able to achieve enough energy density and decrease the charging time.

Bentley will produce 5 new electric models by 2030, and the first of them is due in 2025. The company has announced ‘Beyond100’ in 2020, its new strategy to become carbon-neutral by the end of the decade
Before being an EV-only brand, the British company is set to transform existing models into hybrids. The Flying Spur model will be the first to get a plug-in hybrid drivetrain this year.
Bentley will invest £2.5 billion in its sustainability over the next 10 years and this investment will transform the Crewe Campus into a world-leading, next-generation, low environmental impact manufacturing facility for its first-ever battery-powered electric vehicles.
<h2>The all-new electric Bentley to launch in 2025</h2>
The first new fully electric Bentley will be manufactured at this upgraded Crewe and be seen by the end of 2025. Chairman and CEO Adrian Hallmark has told that this all-new model will not compete with any of Bentley’s existing models, saying: “We intend to create not just an EV but to shape a segment too.”
By the end of the decade, there will be four more electric Bentley, including new hybrid versions of Bentayga, Continental GT, and Flying Spur.
Hallmark also confirmed that in 2022, Bentayga PHEV will be second in the production line, following the plug-in hybrid drivetrain of the Flying Spur. Bentley awaits that one-fifth of the sales in 2022 will be hybrids.
<h2>Bentley’s Beyond100 plan is to be carbon-free by 2030</h2>

Securing production of our first BEV in Crewe is a milestone moment for Bentley, and the UK, as we plan for a long-term sustainable future in Crewe.
