The Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD has opened orders for the Seal U model. For the 2024 model year, there is a significant reduction in prices, almost $3,000.
Having surpassed the 800,000 sales mark in three years, the Seal U will initially come to our country only with the plug-in hybrid version. This motor option stands out with a starting price of $18,000.

⚡ Chinese ZEEKR极氪 announced a major update to its first car, the 001, by replacing over 2,000 components.
🔋 The 2024 Zeekr 001, available with 95 and 100 kWh battery options, now features an 800V architecture. This not only boosts charging speeds up to 350 kW but also significantly enhances the vehicle’s efficiency.
🟢 Transitioning to the new-generation thermal management system called PTM 2.0 along with the battery, the 4.9-meter electric crossover can operate efficiently in both high and low temperatures.
💨 The new 001 offers a single-motor option producing 310 kW (422 HP) and a dual-motor option capable of generating 560 kW (762 HP). Hence, it’s expected to have a starting price around $40,000.

⚡#BYD has revamped its popular electric sedan Han, which sold 220,000 units last year. The 2024 version of the car has been launched in China with a starting price of $25,000.
🟢The 5-meter sedan features a base model with a 150 kW motor, a 60.48 kWh LFP battery, and 110 kW DC charging support. All models come equipped with the new Level 2+ intelligent driving system, DiPilot 100, which has been in development for over 1,000 days. Additionally, the new generation intelligent suspension system, DiSus-C, has been integrated into the 2024 model to enhance Han&#8217;s comfort.

🔋The 2024 BYD Han boasts a range of 506 km (CLTC), which extends up to 715 kilometers in the version with an 85.44 kWh battery. During today&#8217;s event, it was emphasized for the first time that the car features a silicon carbide chip inverter and an 800V architecture. However, the charging speed of the largest battery being limited to 155 kW indicates that the entire high-voltage system is not yet ready for 800V.
🚗In the performance version of the car, a dual-motor powertrain capable of producing 517 horsepower and 700 Nm of torque is used, achieving a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 3.9 seconds.

#Audi has introduced its first car developed on the all-electric PPE platform, the Q6 e-tron.
The Q6 e-tron, which is priced 10% cheaper than its sibling model, the Porsche Macan EV, developed on the same platform, stands out with both more compact and lightweight electric motors and a large prismatic cell-based massive battery.

Audi, using NCM811 cathode cells produced by Chinese company Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) in Germany, states that the larger cell form facilitates battery production. Additionally, it emphasizes that the newly developed smart thermal management system enhances battery life by continuously conditioning the battery and reduces charging time.
Regarding the engine, the company claims a 50% increase in efficiency compared to the first-generation electric Audis and states that it can produce more power with smaller motors by increasing power density by 62%. It should be noted that the Q6 e-tron uses an asynchronous ASM motor at the front and a permanent magnet synchronous PSM motor at the rear, differentiating it from the electric #Macan.

Audi Q6 E-Tron | 255 KM Range with a 10-Minute Charge!

Since joining the MIT faculty in 1978, Donald Sadoway has worked closely on projects to develop batteries which are less expensive than lithium-ion batteries. The aluminum sulfur battery which Sadoway and his research collaborators developed may be able to achieve this goal. Chinese researchers from Peking, Yunnan, and the Wuhan University of Technology are also part of this study.

<h2>Affordable Alternatives For Lithium Ion Batteries</h2>
The world requires affordable alternatives as the cost of lithium soars as a result of rising demand. Sulfur and aluminum are both inexpensive and readily available. According to Sadoway, the price of aluminum-sulfur battery cells will be around $9 per kWh, significantly cheaper than the price of the existing lithium-ion battery cells. A molten salt electrolyte sits in the center of the new battery design, which has two electrodes made of aluminum and sulfur.
The new cells are not ready for electric cars yet. But they may make small-scale rechargeable batteries for households and small businesses less expensive. It might increase the amount of lithium-based cells that are accessible for the transportation industry.

It is important to consider the metal to use in place of the aluminum for the second electrode as well as the type of electrolyte to use between them to transport ions back and forth during charging and discharging. Sulfur is the second electrode component since it is the least expensive non-metal.
<h2>Battery Cells Could Withstand A Very High Charging Rate</h2>
Instead of the almost 1,000 F/537 C for many salts, the researchers looked at a number of molten salts which have comparatively low melting temperatures. It is closer to the boiling point of water. It becomes viable to produce batteries without the need for extra insulation and anticorrosion methods.
The group demonstrated that the battery cells could withstand a very high charging rate for many of cycles. The electrolyte&#8217;s warmth and charging frequency were strongly correlated. The test batteries charged 25 times faster at 230 F/110 C than at 77 F/25 C.

A New Battery Made of Aluminum & Sulfur Offers Cheap Energy Storage

Solid Power’s plan to produce solid-state lithium-ion batteries goes back to 2017. It was reported that BMW and Solid Power set up a partnership to develop batteries without semi-liquid electrolytes. Since then, Ford has joined up as a significant investor in Solid Power.
Solid Power has been founded in 2012 and they are producing solid-state batteries with a sulfur-based electrolyte and an anode with higher silicon (more than %50) in it.

The Colorado-based company has finished a manufacturing line for its solid-state batteries that will allow producing 15.000 battery cells a year. That number might seem too few, however, Solid Power will deliver them to BMW and Ford for testing in their battery electric vehicles. After the tests are done, the company will increase the production volume.

Solid Power has advantages against its rivals with its technology. The company’s batteries have higher density, more range, and shorter charging time compared to conventional ones. Solid Power CEO Doug Campell tells that “The installation of this EV cell pilot line will allow us to produce EV-scale cells suitable for initiating the formal automotive qualification process. Over the coming quarters, we will work to bring the EV cell pilot line up to its full operational capability and look forward to delivering EV-scale all-solid-state cells to our partners later this year.”
By the end of this year, the Colorado-based battery manufacturer plans to deliver to its partners, BMW and Ford, for testing in their prototypes. This will be a major step in the validation process for the solid-state batteries to be sold to other car manufacturers on a larger scale.
The company expects to bring other automakers to join Solid Power’s battery design in the first six months of 2024, which means that we can see the first vehicles with solid-state batteries in two years.

Solid Power to Start Production of Solid-State Batteries

Sulfur is essential to Theion&#8217;s new tech, and the company&#8217;s name is obtained from the Greek word for this yellow mineral. According to CEO Dr. Ulrich Ehmes, it possesses the specific properties to usher in an upheaval in battery chemistry, with ramifications throughout all crucial sectors for EVs. Marek Slavik, co-founder, and CTO had been continuing to work on the innovation for over a couple of years, and Ehmes has recently arrived to make it a development fact. As a matter of fact, sulfur, unlike lithium, appears to require even less energy to create and expense only pennies on the dollar to obtain, according to the company.
&#8220;Current battery tech employs nickel, manganese, and cobalt for the cathode,&#8221; Theion CEO Dr. Ulrich Ehmes explains. &#8220;It&#8217;s called NMC 811 because it&#8217;s made up of 80% nickel, 10% cobalt, and 10% manganese.&#8221; In our exemplification, we substitute sulfur for NMC 811. So there is no nickel, manganese, or cobalt in our cells, and we replace the current collective folds of copper and aluminum with graphene, so there is no aluminum or copper in our cells as well. We only have lithium metal foil, sulfur, and carbon in our cells.&#8221;
Theion&#8217;s next stage is to deliver its material to aerospace customers later this year as an aspect of the processing is applied. The company then intends to support air taxis, drones, cell phones, and notebooks before transitioning to the electric vehicles sector as early as 2024.
