The Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD has opened orders for the Seal U model. For the 2024 model year, there is a significant reduction in prices, almost $3,000.
Having surpassed the 800,000 sales mark in three years, the Seal U will initially come to our country only with the plug-in hybrid version. This motor option stands out with a starting price of $18,000.

⚡ Chinese ZEEKR极氪 announced a major update to its first car, the 001, by replacing over 2,000 components.
🔋 The 2024 Zeekr 001, available with 95 and 100 kWh battery options, now features an 800V architecture. This not only boosts charging speeds up to 350 kW but also significantly enhances the vehicle’s efficiency.
🟢 Transitioning to the new-generation thermal management system called PTM 2.0 along with the battery, the 4.9-meter electric crossover can operate efficiently in both high and low temperatures.
💨 The new 001 offers a single-motor option producing 310 kW (422 HP) and a dual-motor option capable of generating 560 kW (762 HP). Hence, it’s expected to have a starting price around $40,000.
🚗 Equipped with LiDAR sensor-based autonomous driving mode, a new infotainment system powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 chipset, and numerous interior design changes, the exact price of the 001 will be revealed upon its release on February 27th.

🟢The 5-meter sedan features a base model with a 150 kW motor, a 60.48 kWh LFP battery, and 110 kW DC charging support. All models come equipped with the new Level 2+ intelligent driving system, DiPilot 100, which has been in development for over 1,000 days. Additionally, the new generation intelligent suspension system, DiSus-C, has been integrated into the 2024 model to enhance Han&#8217;s comfort.

🔋The 2024 BYD Han boasts a range of 506 km (CLTC), which extends up to 715 kilometers in the version with an 85.44 kWh battery. During today&#8217;s event, it was emphasized for the first time that the car features a silicon carbide chip inverter and an 800V architecture. However, the charging speed of the largest battery being limited to 155 kW indicates that the entire high-voltage system is not yet ready for 800V.
🚗In the performance version of the car, a dual-motor powertrain capable of producing 517 horsepower and 700 Nm of torque is used, achieving a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 3.9 seconds.

Audi, using NCM811 cathode cells produced by Chinese company Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) in Germany, states that the larger cell form facilitates battery production. Additionally, it emphasizes that the newly developed smart thermal management system enhances battery life by continuously conditioning the battery and reduces charging time.
Regarding the engine, the company claims a 50% increase in efficiency compared to the first-generation electric Audis and states that it can produce more power with smaller motors by increasing power density by 62%. It should be noted that the Q6 e-tron uses an asynchronous ASM motor at the front and a permanent magnet synchronous PSM motor at the rear, differentiating it from the electric #Macan.

Tesla Stops Production In Its Germany Factory!

After Nevada state officials&#8217; confirmation, Tesla finally announced their next big factory investment at Giga Nevada today. Elon Musk&#8217;s company will invest over $3.6 billion to build Tesla&#8217;s largest EV battery cell production plant in the world.

Giga Nevada, also known as Gigafactory 1, is somewhat of a joint venture between Japanese battery maker Panasonic and Tesla. The initial investment made in 2014. Since then, both parties spent a total of $6.2 billion to create one of the largest manufacturing sites in the United States. According to Tesla, as of today, the Giga Nevada team has successfully produced more than 7.3 billion battery cells, 1.5 million battery packs, 3.6 million drive units, and 1 million energy modules.

The next phase of this investment will cost over $3.6 billion and includes a 100 GWh 4680 cell factory, as well as the first high-volume Tesla Semi factory. Giga Nevada is capable of producing 35 GWh of battery cells annually, which is enough to manufacture around 500K electric vehicles per year. But that is way less, not even half of what Tesla needs to put into its EVs. Because of that, LG Chem and CATL, two major battery cell suppliers of Tesla, have been shipping billions of cells to Tesla factories every year.
Texas-based EV maker is finally taking this matter into its own hands. 4680 cell manufacturing process is still in the works before reaching perfection at Kato Road. The dry-coating technique that helps Tesla reduce manufacturing costs and the environmental impact of cell production is yet to be scaled up. But there is enough time to improve before starting mass production at the new factory near Giga Nevada.
The estimated capacity of this factory will be 100 GWh, a huge capacity to produce enough batteries for 2 million electric vehicles. Giga Shanghai is Tesla&#8217;s export hub and has the highest production output among other gigafactories. Therefore, Shanghai factory produces more than half of the Model Ys and Model 3s built in the world. That will change when the new Texas and Berlin factories ramp up their Model Y production. According to the latest info, Giga Berlin will reach a 5,000 Model Ys per week production rate in Q1 2023. Yichun is a prefecture-level city in China&#8217;s Jiangxi state. It holds the title of &#8216;Asia Capital of Lithium&#8217;, because of its lithium-rich lepidolite reserves. According to official estimates revealed by the Chinese authorities, Yichun holds 12 percent of world lithium oxide reserves. The city has around 2.58 million tonnes worth of proven lithium oxide.

BYD will invest $4.2B to not only open a new lithium-ion battery cell factory but also a lithium carbonate refinement facility with an annual capacity of 100,000 tonnes. The cell factory will be able to produce at an annual capacity of 30 GWh when completed. Shenzhen-based tech giant will mostly produce LFP cells there. BYD has become the third largest battery maker in the world by outselling Panasonic this year. All thanks to its new LFP cells called &#8220;Blade Battery&#8221;. In a recent market report published by SNE Research, BYD holds a market share of 12 percent in the whole lithium-ion battery industry.

BYD&#8217;s huge battery investments are paying off. It has become the newest battery cell supplier of the world&#8217;s biggest EV maker Tesla. Elon Musk&#8217;s company is going to start using LFP cells purchased from BYD in its vehicles soon. We reported earlier that Tesla will integrate BYD&#8217;s blade battery cells into a structural pack and assemble the latest version of <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/2021-tesla-model-y-long-range" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Model Y</a>. BYD will reportedly supply the &#8216;<a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/news/what-is-structural-battery-ctc-ctb-ev-battery-packs-explained" target="_blank" rel="noopener">structural battery pack</a>&#8216; used inside the cheaper Model Y that will be made in Berlin.
Although it&#8217;s not officially confirmed by the manufacturer, Tesla Model Y with a BYD structural battery pack has received its approval of type from the EU. This means that Tesla could technically start selling the cheaper Model Y in Europe right away. According to documents issued, Tesla implemented a structural battery that has a 55-kWh energy capacity. The new pack gives Model Y a range of 440 kilometers. The range improves further, thanks to a more compact battery that reduces vehicle&#8217;s overall weight around 66 kg.

BYD scored a big win over its rival CATL. Thanks to its unique battery cell design called &#8216;Blade Battery&#8217;, Tesla can use the cells BYD supplies and create an alternative to its 4680-cell structural battery pack. The original Model Y with the structural pack has a capacity of 75 kWh, while BYD&#8217;s pack offers only around 55 kWh. Due to a significant change in the pack design, CATL partially lost one of its most valuable customers. If Tesla starts to use structural packs in Giga Shanghai, BYD will be the go-to supplier for structural pack-proved LFP cells.
Tesla has been using <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/news/lithium-ion-battery-cell-types-lfp-nmc-cells-explained" target="_blank" rel="noopener">LFP cells</a> inside cheaper models for a while. But the new Model Y with the structural pack has been using Tesla&#8217;s own 4680 cells exclusively. Giga Berlin will be the first factory to use BYD&#8217;s lithium-ion battery cells. And the Berlin-made standard range Model Y will become the cheapest EV option Tesla offers to European customers.

Tesla still has a long way forward to be the production giant Elon wants it to become. There are four EV manufacturing plants that Tesla operates today; Fremont, Giga Shanghai, Giga Berlin, and Giga Texas. The automaker will build 6 to 8 more gigafactories in the future. Each factory will be designed to handle at least 1 to 2 million EV production annually. There is no certain timetable for the future factories but Elon heavily hinted that Tesla is looking for a third EV factory location in the North America region, including Canada, Mexico, and United States.
From what we understand, Tesla is certainly planning on increasing its annual output to almost 20 million vehicles in the next decade. The structural battery not only stores energy but also provides structure. It is significantly lighter when a traditional pack and the weight of other necessary parts provide rigidity combined. Thanks to Tesla&#8217;s new 4680 lithium-ion battery cells, there is no excess steel construction inside the structural battery pack. The new chunky cells provide enough rigidity to the vehicle body that the vehicle no longer needs additional parts to carry the load.
One of the most popular disadvantages of the structural pack is that a vehicle with a structural battery pack will most likely be totaled when got into an accident because the battery will be unreplaceable. A recent report shows that it is not true. A structural pack can be disassembled and can even be replaced, as Tesla&#8217;s service manual confirms.
There is only one vehicle that uses a structural battery pack. It is the Texas-made 2022 Tesla Model Y. Chinese EV-makers divide battery pack designs into three major generations. First-gen batteries used a more conventional approach called Cell-to-Module. Individual cells were packaged together inside battery modules, and modules made up the assembly-ready battery pack. This method requires more parts, as a result, structural elements end up increasing the overall cost and weight of the vehicle.

Second-gen batteries are widely known as CTP (Cell-to-Pack), or module-free design. It was first unveiled by two Chinese lithium-ion battery makers CATL and BYD in 2019 and 2020, respectively. The new design approach eliminates the need for battery modules and enables manufacturers to directly put battery cells into the battery pack itself. It reduces the battery pack&#8217;s weight and also improves both the volumetric and gravimetric energy density of the battery.
The evolution of the battery packs did not stop with the elimination of the battery modules. In 2022, two Chinese EV manufacturer, Leapmotor and BYD unveiled their 3rd-generation battery packs called CTC (Cell-to-Chassis) and CTB (Cell-to-Body), respectively. Thanks to new advancements in the field of electric vehicle platforms, automakers can now pack battery cells directly into the vehicle body/chassis itself. There won&#8217;t be any separate battery packs inside <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/news/best-chinese-ev-manufacturers" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chinese EVs</a> soon.

According to Leapmotor, its third-gen battery design will cut the number of parts needed for the battery assembly by 20 percent. It will also reduce the cost of structural parts by 15 percent, and increase the space available for battery cells inside the vehicle by 14.5 percent.
BYD says its new Cell-to-Body battery design approach will dramatically improve its next-gen electric vehicles&#8217; weight distribution and security. CTB/CTC will eventually become the pioneering examples of the new cost-saving, weight-reducing battery designs.

What is Structural Battery, CTC/CTB? EV Battery Packs Explained

The first Gigafactory of Tesla in Europe, the fourth one overall, is officially opened today by the company’s CEO Elon Musk. The initial announcement of building a factory in Europe was made two and a half years ago. The <a href="https://www.licarco.com/news/how-many-tesla-gigafactories/">Giga Berlin</a>-Brandenburg has started officially running today in the German capital.
During the opening ceremony, Tesla has delivered the first 30 Model Ys to the customers. These <a href="https://www.licarco.com/2021-tesla-model-y-performance/">Model Y</a> compact SUVs are the performance configuration of the vehicle and have a range of 320 miles.
The German government has given Tesla provisional approval to start commercial production at the factory in early March. This has allowed Tesla to produce up to 500.000 EVs per year at the Giga Berlin-Brandenburg. The original plan was to begin production in summer 2021; however, the coronavirus pandemic, supply chain disruptions, and environmental concerns have postponed the opening of the factory.
In February 2020, Tesla had to temporarily stop the construction of the factory due to environmental concerns of the local government. Defending the impact of the factory on the environment, Elon Musk argued that the water use of the factory will be relatively very little. He also stated that the forest cleared before the construction wasn’t natural because the trees had been planted for the company’s cardboard factory.

Although Tesla has aimed to produce up to 5,000 cars and 59 GWh of battery capacity annually at Giga Berlin, Musk has previously stated that increasing production will be a real challenge for the company. To achieve this objective, Tesla already hired over 3,000 workers and the number will go up to 12,000 eventually.
In the opening ceremony, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz made a speech that acknowledges the importance of Tesla&#8217;s investment in Germany.

The Giga Berlin-Brandenburg will be a crucial logistical hub for Tesla because the company currently imports vehicles to Europe from its other factories. Tesla is pushing for a new EV production record as there aren&#8217;t many days left in 2021. The Texas-based automaker has been constantly increasing the pace of production at its facilities. But now Giga Shanghai is at another level of its own. The latest drone footage shows that one <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/2021-tesla-model-y-performance/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tesla Model Y</a> produced every 38 to 44 seconds at the site! That means that the annual production rate of Giga Shanghai is at a whopping 683,000 vehicles.
When the Gigafactory 3, the Giga Shanghai first started to produce Model Y electric SUVs in February 2021, the estimated production pace is around one vehicle every 2 minutes. According to the latest drone shots, the Tesla China factory almost tripled its Model Y production pace in less than one year.
At the beginning of 2021, Tesla China can only make 29 Model Ys per hour. Now the Shanghai factory can produce more than 90 electric SUVs every hour. That is an outstanding performance, even for Tesla. Next year, Giga Shanghai will keep increasing its production rate to an annual total of 1 million EVs.

<h2>Giga Berlin and Giga Texas waiting for the final approvals</h2>
Tesla&#8217;s fourth and fifth vehicle production facilities can&#8217;t make it into production this year. But Tesla is confident that as soon as the final approvals are received Giga Berlin and Giga Texas will start producing EVs at a reasonably high pace next year. Austin-based Gigafactory 5 will probably start operating in the first weeks of 2022. Giga Berlin, on the other hand, is still waiting for German authorities&#8217; approval of its documents. The most recent footage came from Berlin shows a couple of German-made Model Ys assembled and parked in the parking area.
